  • When we look at the history of lines, we see that with the beginning of human civilization, lines were engraved on cave walls or rock surfaces for religious, shamanistic meanings, or to leave records. As time passed, characters were invented, which were used as a means of expression and recording, and had a significant impact on painting. In the East, according to the philosophy of 'Wu Wei Zi Ran (無爲自然)', artists borrowed from nature to express their intentions on the canvas with lines, and sometimes wrote their impressions on the canvas before or after painting. Lines were regarded not just as simple boundaries but as manifestations of the energy that evokes the vitality of the subject. Drawing a single line was considered the first act of life newly born in the cosmic space. The line itself implies the depth of space and elements of expression. Many artists have developed lines using contemporary senses and materials based on theories found in literature. This study aims to research the concept of lines and the linear characteristics of the East and West through recorded literature and data, and to study works using the overlapping nature of lines as a modern expression method.

  • The purpose of this study is to find the concept of life, the categories of living things and the systems of categorizing them contained in Buddhism, a sort of metaphysical philosophy. For this, monks who devotes themselves to Buddhism were interviewed, and the differences of the definition of life, the categorizing of living creatures and categorizing systems between biology and other subject teachers and students who are Buddhist and ones who are not were inquired. The result shows that in Buddhism, they use 'being' and 'sentience being' as the terms for creatures and they believe creatures are not individual ones but one collective existence connected with each other, which is very different from the biological definition of creatures. Buddhist include metaphysical beings in categories of living things rather than plants. Buddhist criteria for categorizing things which have life, that is living beings, are how they are born, whether they have a certain form and, lastly, whether they are conscious or not. Through this research results we could expect to identify the misconceptions about concept of life and the categories of living things.

Yeongdae from the Perspective of Material Religion: Transcending the Material and Non-material Yeongdae

  • This article apprehends Yeongdae (靈臺), the most sacred shrine of Daesoon Jinrihoe which has earlier historical precedents, as an example of material religion. In East Asia, the first Yeongdae was a structure that King Wen of Zhou commissioned to be built. As the time passed by, the meaning of Yeongdae was changed to signify a mental yeongdae, the object and the aim of cultivation, and the notional mindset that appears in the Daoist meditation, Cunsi (存思, visualization). This implies that Yeongdae has signified both material and non-material objects. Throughout most of history, these two concepts had never been related to each other, but shifted in form and meaning depending on context. Daesoon Jinrihoe, which emerged in the modern era of Korea, used the concept of investiture of gods and combined the two into one. Accordingly, the Yeongdae, referred to by King Wen to indicate his shrine, was expressed as a spot wherein the gods were enshrined on the earth. As an innovation, Daesoon Jinrihoe argued that gods correspond to properly eligible human beings according to the degree of their cultivation and that sacred space was instead defined a spot within the human mind, a mental yeongdae, where the gods could be enshrined into humanity From the perspective of Lévi-Strauss, the factors that are discovered in the tradition of East Asia, namely, the Yeongdae of King Wen and the mental yeongdae of Zhuangzi can combined with consistency and established in the doctrinal system of Daesoon Jinrihoe. Such an attempt refers to bricolage which re-creates the traditional concepts of the past. In this regard, the concept of invented tradition coined by Eric Hobsbawm could also be used to conclude that the Yeongdae (the shrine of gods) of Daesoon Jinrihoe can be expressed as an invented Yeongdae, which transcends the existing categories of material yeongdae and non-material yeongdae.

For Q-population, 20 school age children were used as subjects for neutral interviews and open surveys, and through documentary research, a total of 132 statements were collected, For Q-samples, 23 statements (Q-samples) were derived through a non-structural method. P-samples were 31 school age children (8-13 year olds), Q-sorting was carried out using Q-cards, and the collected data was analyzed using the PC QUANL program. Results: As a result of the study, children's perception of death was divided into five types. The first type was functional type, characterized by prominent subjective perception regarding the elements of death, such as non-reversibility, universality, non-functionality, and causality. The second was after-life type, characterized by a strong, focus on life after death in one's perception of death, and it included children with Christian background and those who had experienced death in their immediate family. The third was religious type, characterized by a strong belief in being able to still watch over one's family and friends after one's death, resulting in a positive faith in the after-life.
