  • This paper proposed a new time adapted threshold using the standard deviations of Wavelet coefficients after Wavelet transform by frame scale. The time adapted threshold is set up using the sum of standard deviations of Wavelet coefficient in cA3 and weighted cDl. cA3 coefficients represent the voiced sound with low frequency and cDl coefficients represent the unvoiced sound with high frequency. From simulation results, it is demonstrated that the proposed algorithm improves SNR and MSE performance more than Wavelet transform and Wavelet packet transform does. Moreover, the reconstructed signals by the proposed algorithm resemble the original signal in terms of plosive sound, fricative sound and affricate sound but Wavelet transform and Wavelet packet transform reduce those sounds seriously.

The findings show that the participatory activities of Korean older persons could be classified into four types : volunteer-focused, religion-focused, occupation-focused and kyungrodang-focused social participation. Also, it has been found that the determinants of each social participation types, including the non-participatory type, differs according to the socio-demographic condition of each older person, thus indicating that differentiated policy measure is required to enhance the activites of Korean older persons.

  • The article considers the problems of envisaging a paradise on earth, with special reference to Jehovah's Witnesses. After an explanation of their relationship to the Christian Protestant tradition, particularly Adventism and American fundamentalism, some key doctrines of the Watch Tower organisation are identified, with particular reference to their belief in a coming earthly paradise. Jehovah's Witnesses are a restorationist movement, seeking a restored paradise on earth, and endeavouring to restore authentic Christianity in what they take to be its original form. Discussion is given to the possibility of physical accommodation on the earth, the position of animals, family life, language, and technology. Finally, brief comparison is made with the expected paradise of the Daesoon Jinrihoe, which is based on a radically different worldview. It is concluded that such differences help to explain why Jehovah's Witnesses have limited success in Korea, as compared with indigenous Korean new religions such as Daesoon Jinrihoe.
