  • The experimental study on flow and heat transfer characteristics was conducted to investigate and to compare the performance of swirl jet by a twisted tape as a swirl generator with the performance of impinging single circular jet in fully developed flow tube. The effects of jet Reynolds number(Re=8700, 13800, 20000, 26500), dimensionless distance of nozzle-to-plate(H/d=2, 4, 6, 8) and swirl ratio(S=0.11, 0.23, 0.30) of the jet on the local and average Nusselt number have been examined. Measurements of local heat transfer rate and flow patterns on the jet impinging plate were used naphthalene sublimation technique and flow visualization technique respectively. Mean velocity and turbulence intensity of the jet along the centerline were measured. With a twisted tape in the nozzle exit, average Nusselt number at the around area of stagnation point were higher than those without the twisted tape at H/d=2, 4 and with the increase of Reynolds number. With a twisted tape in the nozzle, in the case of H/d=2, Re=26500 and S=0.11, maximum local Nusselt number at the region of y/d=0 and x/d=0.44 was obtained.

  • An experimental investigation of heat transfer characteristics on confined jet impinging plate using multiple slot jets has been performed. The effects of jet Reynolds numbers(Re=2000, 3950, 5900, 7900), dimensionlesss slot-to-plate distances(H/B=2, 4, 6, 8) and jet-to-jet distances(S=16B, 20B, 24B, 30B) on the local and average heat transfer coefficients have been examined. To clarify local heat transfer characteristics, naphthalene sublimation technique were used. From the experimental results, it was found that the local and average heat transfer rates increase with increasing jet Reynolds number. Measurements of local heat transfer coefficients produced by multiple of slot jets have given an indication of the nature of the interaction between jets and of the uniformity of heat transfer obtainable with various arrangements. At S/B=20, Re=7900 and H/B=6, maximum average Nusselt number is obtained.

  • A buoyant jet flow impinging on a circular cylinder is investigated including heat conduction through the cylinder. Temperature and flow fields are obtained by an iterative method, and the effects of the non-uniform wall temperature on the flow and heat transfer are analyzed. Effects of three-dimensionality and the traversing of the jet are also included. Nusselt number over the cylinder surface for the conjugate case is relatively small as compared with the constant wall temperature case due to the small temperature gradient. As the conductivity of the cylinder becomes lower, Nusselt number decreases due to the reduced temperature gradient. Increasing jet traversing speed causes the surface temperature of the cylinder to decrease, which increases local Nusselt number over the surface.

  • The local heat/mass transfer coefficients for arrays of impinging circular air jets on a plane surface are determined by means of the naphthalene sublimation method. Fluid from the spent jets is constrained to flow out of the system in one direction. Therefore, the spent fluid makes a crossflow in the confined space. The present study investigates effects of jet-orifice-plate to impingement-surface spacing and jet Reynolds number. The spanwise- and overall-averaged heat/mass transfer coefficients are obtained by numerical integrating the local heat transfer coefficients. The local maximum heat/mass transfer coefficients move further in the downstream direction due to the increase of crossflow velocity. At the mid-way between adjacent jets, the heat/mass transfer coefficients have a small peak owing to the collision of the adjacent wall jets and are affected strongly by the crossflow. The effect of the crossflow occurs strongly at the small orifice-to-impingement surface distance.

  • The effects of concave hemispherical surface with inclined angle on the local heat transfer from a turbulent round jet impinging were experimentally investigated using transient liquid crystal method. This method suddenly exposes a preheated wall to an impinging jet and then the video system records the response of liquid crystals for the measurement of the surface temperature. The Reynolds numbers were used 11000, 23000 and 50000, nozzle-to-surface distance ratio from 2 to 10 and the surface angles $\alpha=0^{\circ},\;15^{\circ},\;30^{\circ}\;and\;40^{\circ}$. Correlations of the stagnation point Nusselt number according to Reynolds number, jet-to-surface distance ratio and dimensionless surface angle are investigated. In the stagnation point, in term of $Re^n$, n ranges from 0.43 in case of $2{\leq}L/d\leq6$ to 0.45 in case of $6. The maximum Nusselt number occurs in the direction of upstream. The displacement of the maximum Nusselt number from the stagnation point increases with increasing surface angle or decreasing nozzle-to-surface distance. The maximum displacement is about 0.7 times of the jet nozzle diameter.

  • Numerical calculations has been performed for the flow and heat transfer to a circular cylinder from a hot circular impinging air jet. The characteristics of the flow and heat transfer are investigated and compared with the two-dimensional flow. The present study lays emphasis on the investigation on the flow and heat transfer of the three-dimensionality. The effects of the buoyancy force and the size of jet are also studied. The noticeable difference between the three and the two-dimensional cases is that there is axial flow of low temperature into the center-plane of the cylinder from the outside in the recirculation region. Local Nusselt number over the cylinder surface has higher value for the large jet as compared with that of the small jet since the energy loss of hot jet to the ambient air decreases with increase of the jet size. As buoyancy force increases the flow accelerates so that the period of cooling by the ambient air is reduced, which results in higher local Nusselt number over the surface.

  • The present study is conducted to investigate the local heat/mass transfer characteristics for flow through perforated plates. A naphthalene sublimation method is employed to determine the local heat/mass transfer coefficients on the effusion plate. Two parallel perforated plates are arranged for the two different ways: staggered and shifted in one direction. The experiments are conducted for hole pitch-to-diameter ratios of 6.0, for gap distance between the perforated plates of 0.33 to 10 hole diameters, and for Reynolds numbers of 5,000 to 12,000. The result shows that the high transfer region is formed at stagnation region and at the mid-line of the adjacent impinging jets due to secondary vortices and flow acceleration to the effusion hole. For flows through the perforated plates, the mass transfer rates on the surface of the effusion plate are about six to ten times higher than for effusion cooling alone (single perforated plate). More uniform and higher heat/mass transfer characteristic is obtained in overall region with small gap between two perforated plates.

  • The experimental study on heat transfer characteristics of protruding heated block array as conducted to investigate and to compare the performance of impinging single circular jet in fully developed tube with a twisted tape as a swirl generator. The effects of jet Reynolds number(Re=8700, 13800, 20000. 26500), dimensionless jet-to-block distance(H/d=1. 3, 5. 7) and swirl number(S=0.11, 0.23, 0.30) of the swirl jet on the average Nusselt number for each block and all blocks have been examined. Measurements of heat transfer rate on block surfaces were used naphthalene sublimation technique. Mean velocity and turbulence intensity of the jet along the axis were measured. Potential core length of the jet was 5 times of nozzle diameter because it was fully developed and initially turbulent. With the twisted tape in the nozzle, heat transfer coefficients were higher than those without the twisted tape. which are mainly caused with increasing the jet Reynolds number and swirl number.

  • An experimental investigation on heat transfer characteristics of two-dimensional heated blocks using a confined impinging slot jet has been performed. At p/w=1, the effects of jet Reynolds number($Re=3900{\sim}12000$), dimensionless nozzle to block distance(H/B=1, 2, 4, 6) and nozzle type have been examined with five isothermally heated blocks. With the measurement of jet mean velocity and turbulence intensity distributions at nozzle exit, initially turbulent regimes, are classified. To clarify local heat transfer characteristics, naphthalene sublimation technique were used. The local and average heat transfer of heated blocks increase with the sharp-edged nozzle and increasing jet Reynolds number.

  • Most of modem aerospace gas turbines must be operated at a gas temperature which is several hundreds of degrees higher than the melting temperatures of the materials used in their construction. Complicated cooling schemes need to be employed in the combustor walls and in the high pressure turbine stages. Internal passages are cast or machined into the hot sections of aero-gas turbine engines and air from the compressor is used for cooling. In many cases, the cooling system is engineered to utilize jets of high velocity air, which impinge on the internal surfaces of the components. They are categorized as 'Impinging Cooling Method' and 'Vortex Cooling Method'. Specially, research of new cooling system(Vortex Cooling Method) that overcomes inefficiency of film cooling and limitation of space. The focus of new cooling system that improves greatly cooling efficiency using less amount of cooling air on surface heat transfer elevation. Therefore, in this study, a numerical analysis has been peformed for characteristics of flow and heat transfer in the swirl chamber and compared with the flow measurements by LDV. Especially, for understanding high heat transfer efficiency in the vicinity of wall, we considered flow structure, vortex mechanism and heat transfer characteristics with variation of the Reynolds number.
