  • Separation control has been performed using the multi-array/multi-location synthetic jet on NACA23012 at high angle of attack. The flow control using single synthetic jet shows that stall characteristics can be substantially improved with delayed separation point. Theses results show the characteristic of unsteady flow of single synthetic jet. Beside, we researched on multi-array synthetic jet to obtain applicable synthetic jet velocity. Multi-location synthetic jet is proposed to eliminate small vortex on suction surface of airfoil. With the results, we concluded that the flow around airfoil is stable by high frequency synthetic jet with elimination of small vortex and confirmation of stable flow. Moreover, performance of multi-array/multi-location synthetic jet can be improved by changing phase angle of multi-location synthetic jet.

  • There are around 7,500 manure tanks to treat the manures from pigs in Korea. In the tank, there are too much sediments deposited on the base and wall, which causes low efficiency of stock capacity and manure fermentation. In order to minimize sediments and to ferment manure effectively, we developed a 2-fluid jet mixer for mixing sediments in liquid livestock manure tank. For developing the prototype, we tested a factorial experimental system with various nozzles, and simulated CFD models with two kinds of nozzle arrangement. From the results of factorial experiment and CFD simulation, we concluded the dia. ratio of primary : secondary nozzle should be 1:2 and the nozzles should be arranged at the same distances toward to the circumferential direction. With this results, we manufactured a 2-fluid jet mixer which is consists of four 2-phase nozzles, centrifugal slurry pump and root's type air blower. And, we carried out the performance test of the prototype in the round shaped liquid manure tank in the farm. The performance test results showed that the uniformity of TS (Total Solid) and VS (Volatile Solid) was raised from 21.3 g/L, 13.3 g/L In steady state to TS and VS to 23.0 g/L, 14.1 g/L in the mixing operation. Therefore, we could conclude that the prototype of 2-fluid mixer could make the solid material which could be sediments in the tank not to be deposited in the tank and to be contacted to air bubbles which could enhance the efficiency of the fermentation of livestock manure.

  • To reduce the supersonic jet noise from the liquid rocket engine, water injetion silencers were designed and tested. Test variables were the mass flow rate of water jet, the length of primary pipe and the diameter of expansion pipe. Followings are the results of this study. 1. From the same mass flow rate of water, longer primary pipe was more effective to reduce the noise. 2. Noise level was significantly reduced with increasingly water flow rate. 3. The optimum water flow rate was 10~12 times of the propellant flow rate. 4. By installing expansion pipe, noise level was reduced approximately 30㏈ compared to without expansion pipe

  • Effects of the orifice internal flow such as cavitation and hydraulic flip on transverse injection into subsonic crossflows have been studied. The liquid column breakup length and the liquid column trajectory were measured by changing the orifice diameter (d), the orifice length/orifice diameter (L/d), the injection pressure and the shapes (sharp and round) of orifice entrance, and were compared with previous results. It is found that cavitation bubbles, which occur inside the sharp-edged orifice, make the liquid jet very turbulent and especially in the orifices with L/d = 5 hydraulic flip appear as cavitation bubbles are emitted from the orifice. The breakup length is shorter as cavitation bubbles grows and hydraulic flip appears. However, the liquid column trajectories normalized by the effective diameter and the effective momentum ratio have a similar tendency irrespective of cavitation and hydraulic flip.

  • Variable area nozzle, where both throat and exit area vary, is required for optimal expansion and optimal nozzle shape upon operation of after-burner. Steady-state and transient analyses are carried out for each condition with and without afterburner operation and as a function of the location of the nozzle flap. Effects of that nozzle displacement on flow and thrust characteristics are analyzed from numerical results. With variable area nozzle adopted, the combustion field is variable in time, leading to periodically variable thrust. For off-design conditions, flow separation shows up due to over expansion at the flap tips and shock wave does in the nozzle due to under expansion. The undesirable phenomena can be solved by control of variable area nozzle.

  • Numerical simulations have been performed to investigate thrust characteristics of a through-type pintle nozzle with or without flow separation at various operating altitudes. The low Reynolds number $k-{\varepsilon}$ with compressibility correction proposed by Sarkar are applied. The detail flow structures are observed and static pressures along nozzle wall are compared with experimental results. The flow separation in the pintle nozzle disappears and jet plume strongly expands as its operating altitude increases. To evaluate the thrust characteristics, the momentum term and pressure term of thrust are analyzed. Thrust and thrust coefficient at altitude 20 km are about 10% more than them at the ground 0km.

  • In order to reduce the download around Smart UAV(SUAV) at hovering and transition mode, flow control using synthetic jet has been performed. Many of the complex tilt rotor flow features are captured including wing leading and trailing edge separation, and the large region of separated flow beneath the wing. First, in order to control the trailing edge separation, synthetic jet is located at 30, 95% of flap chord length. The flow control using synthetic jet on flap shows that stall characteristics depending on several mode can be improved through separation vortices resizing. Also, a flap jet and a 0.01c jet which control the separation efficiently are applied at the same time at each test case because controlling the leading edge separation is essential for download reduction. As a result, time averaged download is reduced about 18% comparing with no control case at hovering mode and 48% at transition mode. These research results show that if flow control using leading edge jet and trailing edge jet is used effectively to the SUAV in overall flight mode, flight performance and stability can be improved.

  • Cavitation phenomena during the spill process of the Bosch type fuel injection pump for medium-speed diesel engine were investigated by optical observations. Typically, these phenomena can cause a surface damage with material removal or round-off at the plunger and barrel port etc., and may shorten their expected life time. The images, which were recorded with high speed CCD camera and borescope, show that the plunger damage is mainly affected by fountain-like cavitation generated before the end of delivery. And the damages of barrel port and deflector are caused by jet-type cavitation generated after end of delivery.

  • An experimental and computational study has been performed for investigation of the jet interaction in supersonic flow with a ramp located behind a sonic, lateral jet. The experimental techniques include schlieren, pressure taps, and Pressure Sensitive Paint. The numerical solver used in this study is AeroSoft's structured flow solver GASP Version 4.0. A Mach 4 crossflow with a pressure ratio of 532, and the 3D ramp was designed by parametric study using GASP. The results showed that the ramp located downstream of the jet decrese the nose-down pitching moment by 70% without a force loss.

  • Numerical simulations were carried out to investigate the base drag characteristics of a base bleed projectile with a central propulsive jet by considering the base homing process. Overall fluid dynamic process is modeled by Wavier-Stokes equations for reacting flows with two-equation $k-\omega$ SST turbulence closure. The combustion process is modeled by finite-rate chemistry with a given partially burned exit condition of the BBU (base-bleed unit). Besides the demonstrating the capability of the present CFD solver for the base drag and the interaction of the base flow with a rocket plume, present study gives an insight into the fluid dynamics and the combustion process of the hybrid-propulsion projectile.
