  • A helicopter rotor brake system stops or reduces the speed of the rotor by transforming the kinetic energy into the heat energy. The frictionally generated heat has a considerable effect on the frictional property of material itself and causes the change of the friction coefficient which may affect the breaking time significantly. In this paper, to take into account the effect of change of friction coefficient according to temperature on braking time, thermo-mechanically coupled analysis is carried out by commercial software ABAQUS. Further, simple theoretical equation is derived considering thermo-mechanical behaviors. The predicted braking times both from theoretical and numerical methods are compared and validity of proposed theoretical equation is investigated.

  • A method for the inverse dynamic analysis of constrained multibody systems considering friction forces acting on kinematic joints is presented in this paper. The stiction and the sliding which represent zero and non-zero relative motions are considered during the inverse dynamic analysis. Actuating forces to control the position or the orientation of constrained multibody systems are usually calculated in the inverse dynamic analysis. An iterative procedure need to be employed to calculate the actuating forces when the friction is considered. Furthermore, the actuating forces are not uniquely determined during the stiction. These difficulties are resolved by the method presented in this paper.

  • Capillary tubes are widely used as expansion device in small refrigeration systems. The refrigerant flowing in the capillary tube experiences frictional and accelerational head losses and flashing simultaneously. In this paper flow characteristics of adiabatic capillary tubes were simulated with various friction factor models, two-phase viscosity models, and two-phase frictional multiplier models. The predicted pressure distribution and mass flow rate are compared with experimental data reported in literature. It is confirmed that the predicting accuracy with homogeneous model can be improved by employing suitable correlations of friction factor, two-phase viscosity and two-phase frictional multiplier.

  • Generally, the total ventilation resistance coefficient in a tunnel consists of inlet/outlet loss coefficient, wall friction coefficient, and other loss coefficient caused by sudden expansion and contraction of cross-section, etc. For the tunnel before opening, when the running ventilation fan is stopped, the wind speed in the tunnel is reduced by the total ventilation resistance drag. The velocity decay method is comparatively stable and easy to estimate the wall friction coefficient in the pre-opening tunnel. However, the existing study reported that when the converging wind speed is a negative value after the ventilation fan stops, it is difficult to estimate the wall friction coefficient according to the velocity decay method. On the other hand, for the operating tunnel in which the piston effect acts, a more complex process is performed; however, a reasonable wall friction coefficient can be estimated. This paper aims at suggesting a method to minimize the measurement variables of the piston effect and reviewing a method that can be applied to the operating tunnel. Also, in this study, a new method has been developed, which enables to calculate an variation of the piston effect if the piston effect is constant with a sudden change of external natural wind occurring while the wind speed in the tunnel decreases after the ventilation fan stops, and a programming logic has been also developed, which enables dynamic simulation analysis in order to estimate the wall friction coefficient in a tunnel.

  • An experimental study is performed to investigate the effect of air-side heat transfer and friction on characteristics of finned tube heat exchanger under dry surface and wet surface conditions (RH 50%, 70%). Air enthalpy calorimeter is used to obtain the performance evaluation and analysis of a fined tube heat exchanger. Four finned tube heat exchangers with slit fin or plain fin are tested. The number of tube rows are 2 and 3, and the tube diameter is 7 mm. Air-side heat transfer and friction are presented in terms of j factor and friction factor. At dry surface condition, j factor decreases with increasing Re and j factor of 3 row is lower than that of 2 row. Also, the friction factor of a slit fin is larger than that of a plain fin. At wet surface condition, the heat transfer effect is more significant in the case of the slit fin than the plain fin and 2 row than 3 row. The j factor and friction factor are affected by humidity, tube row and fin configuration.

  • This paper presents the investigation of the major influence factors on the degree of soil plugging for open-ended piles based on the Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian (CEL) numerical technique. The main objective of this study was to investigate the effect of soil plugging on the response of piles in various conditions. Through comparison of the results of field load tests, the CEL methodology was found to be in good agreement with the general trend observed by in situ measurement. Additionally, the parametric studies were performed by controlling the soil conditions, soil elastic moduli, end-bearing conditions and multi layers. It was found that the degree of soil plugging for sand layers was greater than that of clay layers. Also, the degree of soil plugging increased with an increase in both the soil stiffness and length of pile embedded in the bearing layer.

  • The creep life of 9Cr1MoVNb steel, in terms of Larson-Miller parameter(LMP), was evaluated by small punch(SP) creep simulation and verified by uniaxial creep test. By employing the elastoplastic FEM(finite element method), the small punch creep behaviors associated with various friction coefficients were simulated to identify a real friction phenomena. The friction coefficient, ${\mu}$=0.7, determined by comparing deflection history was used in the small punch creep simulation to find the equivalent stresses with which the relationship between punch load and uniaxial creep stress was found. The creep life was then predicted by the LMP, which was the relationship among the rupture time, temperature, and stress. Finally, the LMP calculated by SP-creep simulation was compared with that had computed by the uniaxial creep test and fairly matched LMPs were found.

  • The flow characteristics inside U-bend tube of the laminated plate heat exchanger were numerically investigated. The behavior of fluid flow, and the variations of the faulty area and friction factor are examined according to the distance between the span and the wall and the diameter of the round attacked to the end of span. The results show that the diameter(d) of the round attached to the span is mainly associated with the smooth circulation of fluid flow rather than the size of faulty area and the friction factor. As the distance($\ell$) between the span and the wall decreases, the faulty area decreases, however the friction factor dramatically increases. It is also found that one can obtain a good result in the view of the flow characteristics and pressure drop at d=7.5mm and $\ell$=30.5mm.
