  • In the geophysical monitoring to understand the change of subsurface material properties with time, the time-invariant static subsurface model is commonly adopted to reconstruct a time-lapse image. This assumption of static model, however, can be invalid particularly when fluid migrates very quickly in highly permeable medium in the brine injection experiment. In such case, the resultant subsurface images may be severely distorted. In order to alleviate this problem, we develop a new least-squares inversion algorithm under the assumption that the subsurface model will change continuously in time. Instead of sampling a time-space model into numerous space models with a regular time interval, a few reference models in space domain at different times pre-selected are used to describe the subsurface structure continuously changing in time; the material property at a certain space coordinate are assumed to change linearly in time. Consequently, finding a space-time model can be simplified into obtaining several reference space models. In order to stabilize iterative inversion and to calculate meaningful subsurface images varying with time, the regularization along time axis is introduced assuming that the subsurface model will not change significantly during the data acquisition. The performance of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated by the numerical experiments using the synthetic data of crosshole dc resistivity tomography.

  • CFRP composite materials have been widely used in various fields of engineering because of their excellent properties. They show high specific stiffness and specific strength compared with metallic materiasl. Woven CFRP composite materials are fabricated from carbon fibers with two orientation angles ($0^{\circ}/90^{\circ}$), which influences the mechanical properties. Therefore, woven CFRP composite materials show different types of fracture behavior according to the load direction. Therefore, the fracture behavior of these materials needs to be evaluated according to the load direction when designing structures using these materials. In this study, we evaluate the fracture strength of plain-woven CFRP composite materials according to the load direction. We performed tests for six different angles (load direction: $0^{\circ}/90^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}/-60^{\circ}$, $+45^{\circ}/-45^{\circ}$) and estimated the fracture strength for an arbitrary fiber angle by using the modified Tan's theory and harmonic function.

  • Topology optimization is applied for the lightweight design of three main parts of a vertical articulated robot: a base frame, a lower and a upper frame. Design domains for optimization are set as large solid regions that completely embrace the original parts, which are discretized by using three-dimensional solid elements. Design variables are parameterized one-to-one to the material properties of each element by using the SIMP method. The objective of optimization is set as the multi-objective form combining the natural frequencies and mean compliances of a structure for which load steps of interest are selected from the multibody dynamics analysis of a robot. The obtained results of topology optimization are post-processed to designs favorable to manufacturability for casting process. The final optimized results are 11.0% (base frame), 12.0% (lower frame) and 10.0% (upper frame) lighter with similar or even higher static and dynamic stiffnesses than the original models.

  • In this study, it is describe to an optimization analysis process for the weight reduction of the voltage converter in the electric vehicle charging systems. The optimization design is a technique that finds the optimal material distribution under a given material quantity constraint by combining the design sensitivity with the material properties and the mathematical optimization. Among the topology optimization, a lightweight design is performed by a solid isotropic material with penalization with simple formula and well-convergence. The lightweight design consists of three steps. As a first step, a finite element model for the basic design of the on-board voltage converter was constructed and static analysis was performed on the load. In the second step, the optimum shape is obtained for the lightweight by performing the topology optimization using the solid isotropic material with penalization applying the stiffness coefficient of the isotropic material to the static analysis result. As a final step, impact analysis was performed by applying a half-sinusoidal pulse shape impact load which satisfies the impact test standard of the vehicle-mounted part with respect to the optimum shape. In the topology optimization, the design domain was defined as the mounting bracket area, and the design technology was finally achieved by optimizing the mounting bracket to achieve a weight reduction of 20% over the basic design.

  • The optimum condition of glass fiber/epoxy composites was investigated according to mixing ratio of two epoxy matrices. Novolac type epoxy and isocyanate modified epoxy were used as composites matrix. Based on chemical composition of mixing matrix, optimum mixing ratio of epoxy resins was obtained through various experiments. In order to investigate thermal stability and interface of epoxy resin, glass transition temperature was observed by DSC instrument, and static contact angle was measured by reflecting microscope. Change of IR peak and $T_g$ was conformed according to different epoxy mixing ratio. After fabrication of glass fiber/epoxy composites, tensile, compression, and flexural properties were tested by UTM by room and high temperature. The composites exhibited best mechanical properties when epoxy mixing ratio was 1:1.

  • In the present study, the effect of alkali treatment of rice straw on the flexural properties and impact strength of rice straw/recycled polyethylene composite was investigated. Alkali treatments were performed by means of two different methods at various sodium hydroxide (NaOH) concentrations. One is static soaking method and the other is dynamic shaking method. The composites were made by compression molding technique using rice straw/recycled polyethylene pellets produced by twin-screw extrusion process. The result strongly depends on the alkali treatment method and concentration. The shaking method done with a low concentration of 1 wt% NaOH exhibits the highest flexural and impact properties whereas the soaking method done with a high concentration of 10 wt% NaOH exhibits the highest properties, being supported qualitatively by the fiber-matrix interfacial bonding of the composites. The properties between the two highest property cases above-described are comparable each other. The study suggests that such a low concentration of 1 wt% NaOH may be used for alkali treatment of natural fibers to improve the flexural and impact properties of resulting composites, rather than using high concentrations of NaOH, 10 wt% or higher. Considering of environmental concerns of alkali treatment, the shaking method is preferable to use.

  • Fiber metal hybrid laminate (FML) can be used as an economic material with superior mechanical properties and light weight than conventional metal by bonding of metal and FRP. However, there are disadvantages that it is difficult to predict fracture behavior because of the large difference in properties depending on the type of fiber and lamination conditions. In this paper, we study the failure behavior of hybrid materials with laminated glass fiber reinforced plastics (GFRP, GEP118, woven type) in Al6061-T6 alloy. The Al alloys were coated with GFRP 1, 3, and 5 layers, and fracture behavior was analyzed by using a static test and a low cycle fatigue test. In the low cycle fatigue test, strain - life analysis and the total strain energy density method were used to analyze and predict the fatigue life. The Al alloy did not have tensile properties strengthening effect due to the GFRP coating. The fatigue hysteresis geometry followed the behavior of the Al alloy, the base material, regardless of the GFRP coating and number of coatings. As a result of the low cycle fatigue test, the fatigue strength was increased by the coating of GFRP, but it did not increase proportionally with the number of GFRP layers.

  • In this study, an analysis technique of hybrid girder considering nonlinearity of steel-concrete contact surface is presented. Steel-concrete hybrid girder shows partial-interaction behavior due to the deformation of shear connectors, slip and detachment at the interface, and cracks under the applied loads. Therefore, the partial-interaction approach becomes more reasonable. Contact surface is modeled by interface element and analyzed nonlinearly because of cost of time and effort to detailed model and analysis. Steel and Concrete are modeled considering non-linearity of materials. Material property of contact surface is obtained from push-out test and input to interface element. For the constitutive models, Drucker-Prager and smeared cracking model are used for concrete in compression and tension, respectively, and a von-Mises model is used for steel. This analysis technique is verified by comparing it with test results. Using verified analysis technique, various analyses are performed with different parameters such as nonlinear material property of interface element and prestress. The results are compared with linear analysis result and analysis result with the assumption of full-interaction.

  • In this paper, we developed the direct numerical simulation(DNS) model considering the geometry of yams which consist of 3D orthogonal woven composite materials, and using this model, the dynamic behavior of under transverse low-velocity impact has been studied. To build up the micromechanical model considering tow spacing and waviness, an accurate unit structure is presented and used in building structural plate model based on DNS. For comparison, DNS results are compared with those of the micromechanical approach which is based on the global equivalent material properties obtained by DNS static numerical tests. The effects with yarn geometrical irregularities which are difficult to consider in a macroscopic approach are also investigated by the DNS model. Finally, the multiscale model based on the DNS concepts is developed to enhance efficiency of analysis with real sized numerical specimen and macro/micro characteristics are presented.

  • The photocatalyst of $TiO_2$coated on glass bead was prepared from sol-gel method to remove the VOC (vola-tile organic compounds) by the photocatalytic reaction. The coated films were characterized by X-ray diffraction(XRD), specific surface area(BET), and scanning electron microscopy observation (SEM), The gas-phase photocatalytic degradation of trichloroethylene(TCE) and benzene with coated titanium dioxide on glass beads was in-vestigated using a fixed bed reactor. The degradation was calculated by the concentration difference with the retained on the reactor with aid of gas chromatography. At steady state, conversion yields were obtained for 80% of trichloroeth-vlene in 400 ppmv concentration and 65% on benzene in the range of concentration from 50 to 300 ppmv, respectively.
