  • In this study, the static and dynamic load tests were carried out to propose the safety factor of steel prebored and precast piles in weathered rocks. The axial load tests have been conducted on test piles with nominal diameters of 0.508 and 0.457 m. The piles were subject to static loading tests (14 times) and dynamic loading tests (EOID 14times, Restrike 14times). The dynamic loading tests were first executed after the casting of test piles ((1) initial EOID test). (2)In the succeding 28 days from completion of construction, static load tests were performed and (3)final restrike tests were carried out after 15 days from the static test. As a result, the bearing capacity based on Davisson method was 15% higher than that of the restrike tests. The bearing capacity of the static load tests were larger than that of the dynamic tests. By comparing the safety factor through various loading tests, the safety factor of dynamic loading tests were suggested to be lowered to 1.75 from the conventional 2.0.

  • In this study, each top-down load test and bi-directional load test has been performed on the 480mm diameter of two rock socketed drilled shafts, which are located next to each other, and the results have been compared. The result shows that the settlement from the equivalent load-settlement curve of bi-directional load test is smaller than one from top-down load test, because elastic is not considered in equivalent load-settlement curve of bi-directional load test. Therefore elastic shortening should be considered to obtain appropriate equivalent load-settlement curve. Three existing methods used to obtain equivalent load-settlement curve with consideration of elastic shortening has been compared with the result of top-down load test. The result shows that those existing methods are sufficiently applicable to the design. In addition, result of comparison between top-down load test and bi-directional load test shows that bi-directional load test was found to overestimate bearing capacity because it does not consider pile body failure.

  • Numerical analysis method for prediction of pile behaviour characteristics has widely been used in detail design process before construction because field static loading test requires high cost. However, the reliability verification of numerical analysis of result is not permitted compare with field test. In this study, to verify the numerical analysis results, pile behaviour prediction was compared with field static loading test results. For exact analysis of interaction between pile and ground, soil investigation and in-situ test such as boring, SPT and bore-hole shear test were performed before pile static loading test. During the static loading test, pile behaviour characteristics were analyzed under every loading condition. After static pile loading test, numerical analysis was carried out under same condition with static pile loading test. In the numerical analysis, to apply same loading condition with each loading condition in the field test and to compare with between the results of numerical analysis, the field test results for reliability were verified with the results of numerical analysis.

  • In case of USA, the drilled shaft and the driven pile in the field showed a good correlation in the analysis of the bearing capacity between the dynamic load test and the static load test. However, in Korea, we mainly install the bored pile, which is not widely used overseas and we tried to confirm the reliability of the dynamic load test on the bored pile, because many people questioned the reliability of it. In this study, load tests were carried out on PHC bored piles in LH field (Cheonan, Incheon, Uijeongbu), and the bearing capacity of the dynamic load test (EOID 7times, Restrike 7times) and the static load test (7times) were compared and analyzed. As a result, the average of the bearing capacity of the static load test was 27% higher than that of the dynamic load test (reliability : 0.73, coefficient of variation : 0.3). And the average of the bearing capacity of the static load test (Davisson) was 27% higher than that of the bearing capacity of the dynamic load test (Davisson) (reliability : 0.73, coefficient of variation : 0.2). To reduce the difference between the bearing capacity of the dynamic load test and the static load test, we proposed modified bearing capacity of dynamic load test (base bearing capacity of EOID + skin frictional force of restrike) and difference between the bearing capacities was reduced to 9% (reliability : 0.91, coefficient of variation : 0.2). And the coefficient of variation was reduced to 0.2 and the consistency of analysis increased.

  • Conducting statistical analysis of foundation resistance using sufficient number of well-performed load test results is prerequisite for the calibration of reliable resistance factors for foundation LRFD. In this study, a rational analysis method is proposed so that the proof pile load test results can be reflected in update of resistance statistical characteristics based on Bayesian theory. Then, resistance factors for driven steel pipe piles compatible with Korea foundation practices are updated by implementing this rational analysis method. To accomplish the resistance factor updates, (1) prior pile resistance distribution is constructed based on the results of pile load tests, which loads are imposed at least up to their ultimate limit loads. (2) likelihood function is obtained from the results of proof pile load tests, and (3) posterior pile resistance distribution is updated by combining these prior pile resistance distribution and likelihood function. The resistance factors are updated using the posterior pile resistance following the first-order reliability method (FORM). From the possible results of five consecutive proof pile load tests, the updated resistance factors vary within ranges of 0.27-0.96 and 0.19-0.68 for target reliability indices of 2.33 and 3.0, respectively. Consequently, it was found that the Bayesian theory-implemented method enables the updates of resistance factors in an efficient way when reliable resistance factors are not available due to the lack of well-performed pile load test results.

  • In the west coastal soft ground, the static and dynamic loading tests for PHC piles which were executed using light driving without injecting cement milk were carried out and the correlation was analyzed. Initial dynamic loading test used hydraulic hammer(ram weight 70kN) and final average penetration effect presented 3.0 to 8.0mm at 0.8m drop. Then final allowable bearing capacity using CAPWAP presented 776.4 to 1,053.6kN a pile. The static loading tests which were performed at the other piles loaded 200% of the design load dividing by eight phases. As the result, total settlement was 15.97 to 16.38mm and residual settlement was 4.48 to 5.38mm, but both yielding and ultimate load can't be estimated. Therefore, allowable bearing capacity was determined larger than 1,200kN a pile regarding maximum test load as yielding load. Thus, it showed that allowable bearing capacity of the dynamic loading test was larger than static loading test in 1.54 to 1.14 times.

  • The calibration of resistance factor in reliability theory for limit state design of gravel compaction piles (GCP) requires a reliable estimate of ultimate bearing capacity. The static load test is commonly used in geotechnical engineering practice to predict the ultimate bearing capacity. Many graphical methods are specified in the design standard to define the ultimate bearing capacity based on the load-settlement curve. However, it has some disadvantages to ensure reliability to obtain an uniform ultimate load depend on engineering judgement. In this study, a well-fitting nonlinear regression model is proposed to estimate the ultimate bearing capacity, for which a nonlinear regression analysis is applied to estimate the ultimate bearing capacity of GCP and the results are compared with those calculated using previous graphical method. Affect the resistance factor of the estimate method were analyzed. To provide a database in the development of limit state design, the load test conditions for predicting the ultimate bearing capacity from static load test are examined.

  • Performance improvement of helical piles in static load tests using hexagon joints that do not require welding or bolting was investigated. Two sites were selected for pile field tests to evaluate their bearing capacity. Static and pull-out load tests were undertaken to assess the method for estimating bearing capacity. The field tests indicated that the bearing capacity of the gravity grout pile was ≥600 kN in the static load test, consistent with the AC 358 Code. The non-grout pile had a bearing capacity of ≤600 kN, suggesting that gravity grouting is required. Field pile load-test results were used to establish the bearing capacity equation, based on a small number of helical pile.
