The Empathy for Dementia using Virtual Reality (EDuVR) system, developed by the Jeju Provincial Dementia Center, is a 3D video system capturing the experience of dementia in a first-person perspective using 360 degree vritual reality (VR) technology. It was developed to create a greater understanding of dementia and to help people empathize with individuals with dementia through an immersive VR experience. The EDuVR shows how a dementia patient has impairments in memory, orientation, language, judgment and problem solving, as well as problems with activities of daily living. The present study reported the effectiveness of the EDuVR experience in changing public awareness of, and attitude toward, dementia. Sixty-six participants were assigned to the EDuVR (n = 34) or the conventional education (n = 32) groups, and two types of questionnaires - attitude and awareness questionnaires - were administered to the subjects before and after the EDuVR experience or education. The simulator sickness and presence questionnaires were administered to the EDuVR group to assess cybersickness and presence of the VR experience. As a results, the attitude and awareness toward dementia patients changed positively in both the EDuVR and the conventional education groups, and these changes did not differ between two groups. Only one person reported a significant level of cybersicness after experiencing the EDuVR system. These results suggest that the EDuVR enhances the level of understanding and empathy for dementia and would be a useful tool for improving awareness in the general public.
Although the use of social media by doctors raises important issues concerning medical professionalism, the relevant professional bodies in South Korea have failed to issue clear guidelines on social media usage. The Korean Medical Association's newly revised ethics guidelines do require members to maintain dignity while using social media, but the idea of "maintaining dignity" is far from clear, and its premodern connotation prevents it from being reliably used in professional codes of conduct. The authors of this article examine the concept of maintaining dignity and conclude that once it is clarified and redefined it can and should be used as a viable ethical standard in a variety of contexts, including the use of social media. Social media's unpredictability and uncontrollability, and the blurred distinction between professional/public and personal/private can be a threat to medical professionalism. In order to deal with this threat, the concept of dignity is important. We present three examples in which the dignity of medical professionals is undermined and explain why these jeopardize public trust. We conclude that in order to maintain public trust the Korean Medical Association should provide more detailed guidelines on the use of social media by its members.
Elderly suicide is a major public health issue in South Korea. The aim of this study was to systematically examine the current knowledge about suicidal ideation among Korean older adults with specific focus on risk and preventive factors. In order to achieve this aim, a meta-analysis was conducted using Korean academic peer-reviewed journals published since 2001. A total of 97 articles were selected that met the research criteria (e.g., original study findings and key words of suicidal ideation, suicidal thought, and suicide). Three domains were identified and used for further analysis: individual, family, and society. Results showed that among individual factors, depression and burden or stress increased the risk of suicidal ideation, while better mental health reduced the risk of suicidal ideation. Among family factors, living alone was a risk factor for suicidal ideation, while family cohesion was a preventive factor for suicidal ideation. Among social factors, elderly discrimination, social isolation, and negative relationships were significant risk factors, while social support, social environment, and social activities were significant preventive factors affecting suicidal ideation. The results suggest several practical implications for developing suicide prevention programs and counseling approaches to address suicidal ideation. For example, depression and stress can be reduced by MBSR (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction) program where meditation is used as a coping strategy. In addition, counseling programs specifically focused on improving family and social relations should be implemented. Government should continuously support for these programs to prevent suicide among older Koreans.

The purpose of this study was to explore the meaning of life in near-poor elderly living alone and experiencing depression. We focused on their lived experiences so that we could understand the essential structure of what kind of life they live. The eligible population included those aged 65 or older, showing 9 points or higher in the Korean form of Geriatric Depression Scale (KGDS), currently living alone for more than 1 year, having no problems of communication difficulties, and nationally defined as a near-poor group. A purposive sample of 8 seniors enrolled in s mental health welfare center in Incheon Metropolitan City were recruited. The phenomenological approach suggested by Colaizzi was used. Data was collected from May 2018 to October 2019 through in-depth interviews. As a result of the study, 6 categories, including 48 themes and 19 theme clusters, were drawn from the data: 'a shabby life that cannot live without help', 'a life where the body and mind are sick', 'a life that wants to be self-reliant', 'a life of gratitude', 'a life with inner peace', and 'a life that needed institutional support.' Findings of this study can be evidence for developing suitable emotional support programs for the near-poor elderly living alone and to enact various welfare laws and policies at the national level.
The purpose of this study is to confirm the effect of the young generation's Fairness perception on the hopelessness at the present time when the hopelessness of the future that young generation is experiencing is growing with social interest. This study examined the mediating effects of the perceived control and moderating effect self-esteem between the fairness perception and the hopelessness of the young generation. For this purpose, the self-reporting data of 313 young people in their 20s and 30s were collected. The results were as follows: First, fairness awareness was positively correlated with perceived control and self-esteem, and the hopelessness was negatively correlated with fairness awareness, perceive control and self-esteem. Second, perceived control mediated between fairness perception and the hopelessness, Third, self-esteem moderated the relationship between the fairness perception and the hopelessness. The high self-esteem group showed little change in hopelessness due to fairness perception while the low self-esteem group showed a big change in hopelessness due to fairness perception, which means that high self-esteem plays a role in alleviating hopelessness when fairness perception is low. The results of this study can be used as basic data to plan ways to improve mental health and quality of life.

This study investigated the differences in emotional labor, job satisfaction, and organizational commitment by job type, and the effect of emotional labor on job satisfaction and organizational commitment for public library employees. Using SPSS 27.0, the survey contents were performed frequency analysis, factor analysis, validity analysis, reliability analysis, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis. As a result of the study, it was found that the librarianship experienced more emotional labor than non-librarians, and the frequency of emotional labor increased depending on whether or not the civil service was included, and had a negative effect on overall job satisfaction and job condition satisfaction. However, in the case of psychological response to job satisfaction, library data work was found to be high. In terms of user service, emotional labor that occurs in librarians' work has two sides, which can have both positive and negative effects on the librarian's job satisfaction and organizational commitment. Therefore, practical measures to reduce the frequency and emotional dissonance of emotional labor and increase the diversity of emotional labor should be included in the user response manual and future mental health promotion program development.
Objective : This study was to apply a cognitive rehabilitation group program based on sensory activity in patients with dementia living in a facility and to check its effectiveness on cognitive function, depression, and quality of life (QOL). Methods : Sensory-based cognitive rehabilitation group programs (20 sessions) were conducted for eight elderly with dementia over the age of 65 living in a nursing facility located in H-gun, Gangwon-do. The participants' cognitive function, depression level, and QOL were evaluated before and after the program. Results : The mean of Mini-Mental State Examination-Dementia Screening increased; however, there was no statistically significant difference. In contrast, the mean post-test score of the Subjective Memory Complaints Questionnaire decreased, and there was a statistically significant difference (p < .05). The mean post-evaluation score of Short Geriatric Depression Scale measured to confirm the decrease in depression compared to the pre-evaluation score, but there was no statistically significant difference. Finally, the mean post-evaluation score of the World Health Organization QOL assessment instrument-Brief confirmed the change in the QOL, and there was a statistically significant difference (p < .001). Conclusion : This study will provide the basis for suggesting the usefulness of developing a sensory activity-based cognitive rehabilitation group program for dementia patients living in facilities.
This study explores the aftermath of state violence and the meaning of its healing by analyzing testimony therapy designed to deal with trauma of the victims of May 18 democratization movement("May 18"). In order to have a point of view that May 18 had catastrophic impacts on many individuals and communities and to observe the after-effects of such event to individuals' lives, this study analyzed the contents of testimony therapy sessions of four people who were tortured, arrested and detained after their participating in May 18 in 1980. The experiences of those participants with their testimony therapy and the interactions they had with the audience during the sessions made sure what are the key factors to healing the trauma from state violence. Nineteen topics were drawn from analyzing the statements made in the therapy process, and out of them, seven subjects below were chosen as the most significant; 'repetitive pain', 'social and economic damage', 'isolation and disconnection', 'transition of suffering to other generations', and 'Safety', 'healing through connections', 'obligation as a survivor'. Based on its findings, this study also examined the characteristics of trauma caused by state violence and made suggestions for healing such trauma.

This study analyzed the research trends of COVID-19 research papers published in medical journals of Korea. Data were collected from 25 MEDLINE journals in 'Medicine and Pharmacy' studies and a total of 800 were selected. As a result of the study, authors from domestic affiliations made up 76.96% of the total, and the proportion of authors from foreign institutions decreased without significant change. The authors' majors were 'Internal Medicine' (32.85%), 'Preventive Medicine/Occupational and Environmental Medicine' (16.23%), 'Radiology' (5.74%), and 'Pediatrics' (5.50%), and 435 (54.38%) papers were collaborative research. As for author keywords, 'COVID19' (674), 'SARSCoV2' (245), 'Coronavirus' (81), and 'Vaccine' (80) were derived as top keywords. There were six words that appeared throughout the entire period: 'COVID19,' 'SARSCoV2,' 'Coronavirus,' 'Korea,' 'Pandemic,' and 'Mortality.' Co-occurrence network analysis was conducted on MeSH terms and author keywords, and common keywords such as 'covid-19,' 'sars-cov-2,' and 'public health' were derived. In topic modeling, five topics were identified, including 'Vaccination,' 'COVID-19 outbreak status,' 'Omicron variant,' 'Mental health, control measures,' and 'Transmission and control in Korea.' Through this study, it was possible to identify the research areas and major keywords by year of COVID-19 research papers published during the 'Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).'
Materialistic values can be a important variable to understand Koreans' psychological well-being and mental health. This study aimed to validate the Korean version of the Material Values Scale (K-MVS)(Richins & Dawson, 1992). In study 1, we performed confirmatory factor analysis(CFA) to ascertain the three factor model of the original MVS using 417 Korean undergraduate student data(sample 1). The CFA confirmed the three-factor model of the MVS. Yet, three items that yielded low factor loadings in this study as well as in other MVS validation studies were excluded from the final model. In study 2, content, construct, and concurrent validity of the K-MVS were examined with 650 undergraduate student data(Sample 2). We also tested measurement invariance across two groups(i.e., college student group of Sample 2 and employee group of Sample 3). The result revealed that the three-factor model of the K-MVS hold true across the two groups. Lastly test-retest reliability was calculated with 408 female college student data(Sample 4) that filled out K-MVS twice within 6 months. These findings suggest that the K-MVS is a reliable and valid measure for assessing materialistic values in Korea.
