Purpose: Recently, the number of severely mentally ill patients has been increasing rapidly in Korea, but there are no design guidelines for spatial planning of Korea's acute psychiatric wards. The study aims to clarify the areas and required rooms in Korea's acute psychiatric wards which are important in establishing the design guidelines for Korea's acute psychiatric wards. Methods: This study proposed a structural framework based on the results of investigating and analyzing the acute psychiatric ward guidelines in the UK, Australia, and the U.S. and the areas and the required rooms of the wards stipulated in the basic data for establishing acute psychiatric ward design guidelines in Korea. The design guidelines for overseas acute psychiatric wards are 'Adult Acute Mental Health' in the UK, 'Adult Acute Mental Health Inpatient Unit' in the Australia, and 'Specific Requirements for Mental Health Hospitals' in the United States. Results: As a result of investigating and analyzing the design guidelines for overseas acute psychiatric wards, the areas of wards applicable to acute wards in domestic psychiatric wards were access, patient, treatment, support, and employee areas. In addition, the required rooms for each area were defined around major considerations such as visibility, convenience, comfort, security, safety, patient observation, barrier-free design, and privacy protection. Implications: The results of the study will be presented as a structural framework and basic data for establishing design guidelines for Korea's acute psychiatric wards, which is still absent.

Purpose : The information of mental health facilities in Korean law is so unclear that people hardly enable to understand what sort of proper mental health service is prepared for them. Futhermore, there is not enough regulation and standard to classify each type of facilities in the law. Therefore the purpose of this study is to provide data on the basis for classification and facility standards by analysing Korean law and policies. Methods : This study was conducted by a research on law and regulation of mental health facility. Results : The result of this study can be summarized into three points. The first one, current law and policy do not reflect a change in community mental health services paradigm. The second one, the classified facility should be designed to fit the community mental health services. The third one, overall, it requires more detailed guidelines to enhance the quality of mental health services. Besides, the treatment as well as the function of the prevention and rehabilitation are necessary criteria that can also be enhanced. Implications : This study looked at the classification and facility standard of mental health facility by the change in community mental health services paradigm. Forward according to these changes, there is a need for specific guidelines for mental health facility.

Purpose: In Korea, the increase rate of the number of mentally ill patients increases, and the hospitalization period for severely mentally ill patients to stay in acute wards is long and the re-hospitalization rate is high. In order to improve the dignity of patients with acute mental illness and to plan a therapeutic environment for this, this study attempted to present a basic framework of spacial planning for establishing guidelines for psychiatric acute ward in general hospitals. Methods: By analyzing the acute psychiatric ward guidelines of the UK, Australia, and the US., this study analyzed the areas and required rooms of psychiatric acute ward in general hospitals, as well as the net floor area of each room, and the connection between the rooms. Results: As a result of the study, the basic framework for the ward areas and the required rooms, the net floor areas of the rooms, and the connection between the rooms were presented for the establishment of guidelines for the psychiatric acute ward in general hospitals. Implication: The results of the study will be used as a basic framework of space planning for establishing of guidelines for the psychiatric acute ward in general hospitals and will contribute to the establishment of detailed guidelines based on the space configuration through surveys and analysis of space use status, operation status, and expert interviews in Korea.

Healthcare design is always challenged to come up with the rapid changes in healthcare system and industry as well as complicated planning requirements. This thesis aims to grab good instructions from Louis I Kahn who designed more than 15 healthcare projects during his entire life, from the winning project of the student competition in 1920 to Ayub hospital in Dhaka, Bangladesh after his death. His many hospital projects are deeply related to his famous projects such as Yale Art gallery, Philips Exeter Library, and Sher-E-Bangla Nagar national capital of assembly hall. But, it is not easy to find the researches about his hospital projects among many books and theses about him. Thus, this thesis investigates them and their contextual and historical relationships in order to find the way to apply his knowledge and philosophy about healthcare design to the modern hospital projects. We expect that it will promote more following researches for his healthcare projects.

Purpose: General hospital in korea is getting large-scaled, specialized and upgraded. So, nursing unit of race track type has been advanced along with a spatial organization, building equipment and environmental approach. This study is to search the guidelines for renovation of nursing unit with race track type in the case of K university hospital in Daejeon. Methods: 9 cases of recently opened general hospital has been analyzed for spatial and environmental design solution. Questionnaires and interviews about user needs of nursing staff, patient and visitors, have been conducted for a nursing care system and facility of nursing units in K university hospital. Results: The user needs are represented as followings. Center core public zone in each floor plan and center core nursing station and supporting areas in nursing unit are good for an adjacency and separation of spatial organization. Toilet of group patient room is necessary to equip for easy, safe and infective aspects, and so toilet install will decrease the patient number and increase the nursing care service. Hall type of station front is good for visibility and observation. It is appropriate to renovate into south facing group patient room for privacy, enough space for nursing care facility and supporting area, enough width of door to move portable medical equipment, room for medical doctor and practical student, noise absorbing of day room. At the present time, no systematic review has been conducted to report the project's outcomes or trends. This study systematically reviewed existing evidence related with community care pilot project. A total of 61 articles, including 18 original literatures and 43 review literatures were finally selected. For original literatures, the most frequent literatures focused on demand surveys (n=4) and model proposals (n=4), the utilization of touchpoint (n=3), space design and architectural model (n=3), manpower training and role establishment (n=2), followed by prioritizing objectives (n=1) and research trend study (n=1). For review literatures, the most frequent literature focused on the elderly (n=12) and relatively few literature on the disabled and mental illness (n=2). Since the pilot project for community care has been implemented for only about one year, the present study indicates that more future research is needed to the disabled, mental illness, and homeless should be conducted as well as elderly.

The burden of medical expenses and the loss of social capital due to chronic diseases are becoming problems worldwide, and comprehensive and inclusive measures across various fields are required to prevent and manage their impacts. Social prescriptions have been shown to be effective in resolving the fundamental causes of health problems in patients with chronic diseases and in supporting existing treatments. In particular, green prescriptions that utilize the healing effects of nature and green spaces based on social prescriptions are being introduced in many countries overseas. Green prescription is the practice of a healthcare provider recommending activities in green spaces or experiences in the natural environment to patients for the prevention and management of chronic diseases. This study analyzed cases focusing on the policy system, the cases of the United Kingdom and the United States, which have introduced and operated green prescriptions under a national system. For this purpose, this study compared the background of green prescription introduction, related policies, and operation methods. Based on this, four implications were proposed to establish an effective plan for introducing green prescriptions in Korea. First, prior to establishing a policy for green prescriptions, interest in and research on green prescriptions are essential. Second, an implementation plan that fits the national health care system should be established, and policies should support the plan. Third, the introduction of green prescriptions from a long-term and gradual perspective is required. Fourth, comprehensive cooperation is required for the introduction and implementation of the green prescription system. This study can be used as basic data for discussion before introducing green prescriptions in Korea in the future.
