  • This study investigated gender differences in contribution of antisocial personality and affective empathy to psychopathy. Two hundred fifteen college students (male, 118; female,97) completed three measures including the PPI-R(Psychopathic Personality Inventory-Revised), the PAI-ANT(Personality Assessment Inventory-Antisocial Features), and the EETS (Emotional Empathy Tendency Scale). According to the results, the mean scores of PPI-R and EETS in male group were higher than in female group. Antisocial features were positively associated with psychopathy in both male and female groups and negatively with affective empathy. Males showed that the scores of affective empathy were negatively associated with those of antisocial features and psychopath. Females showed that the scores of affective empathy were negatively associated with those of antisocial personality and psychopathy but the correlation was significant only with the scores of antisocial behavior (ANT-A). To scrutinize the differences between male and female groups, the scores on the PAI and EETS were compared between 30% upper and 30% lower groups based on the scores of the PPI-R. According to the results, the upper group of the scores on the PPI had higher scores on the PAI and lower scores on the EETS. The differences of the scores on the EETS between high-psychopathy and low-Psychopathy groups were bigger in male group than in female group. Explanations and implications of the results were discussed and the directions of the future studies were suggested.

  • This study examined whether aggression mediates the effects of seven sub-types of narcissistic personality on psychopathy. It hypothesized that some of narcissistic personality could affect aggression that, in turn, contributes to psychopathy. The sample of this study consisted of 864 college students (451 males and 413 females). The participants completed an assessment battery consisting of Narcissistic Personality Inventory(NPI), Aggression Questionnaire(AQ), and Self-Reported Psychopathy Scale(SRPS). According to the results, narcissistic personality and aggression variables affected psychopathy, and aggression predicted students' psychopathy. The effects of students' narcissistic personality on psychopathy were partly mediated by aggression. The research findings partly supported the hypothesis, and were discussed on gender differences in relation among sub-types of narcissistic personality, aggression, and psychopathy. The implications and limitations of this study were suggested.

  • This literature review introduced the concept of psychopathy which has never been defined academically in Korea. Also it is reviewed how this concept could be applied as latent factor of criminal behavior in the forensic settings. For this purpose, first of all, the periodical change of psychopathy definition was explored. Then it was investigated which determinants might develop psychopathy and what would be the behavioral characteristics of psychopaths. Finally, risk assessment tools measuring psychopathy were introduced and their predictive efficacy and applicability in Korean criminal justice system was discussed.

  • We report a case of antipsychotics induced torsade de pointes in a 42-year-old female schizophrenic patient. The patient had taken perphenazine 20 mg/day, chlorpromazine 100 mg/day, and trifluoperazine 15 mg/day irregularly for about 8 years. She experienced syncope and a few difficulties in breathing. On EKG(electrocardiography), QT interval was delayed and polymorphic QRS complexes and ventricular tachycardia were observed. Following a switch of the antipsychotics to haloperidol, known to have fewest effects on the cardiac rhythms among antipsychotics, the arhythymias disappeared. However after discharge, as dose of haloperidol was increased, the symptoms such as chest discomforts and syncopes reappeared. We concluded that the torsade de pointes was developed by antipsychotics. The most common cause of sudden death in patients receiving antipsychotic treatment appears to be ventricular tochycardia. Therefore, clinician should be well aware of the possible side effects of antipsychotics and be cautious in prescribing such drugs to their patients.

  • This study examined the differences in facial emotion processing related to psychopathic traits. On the basis of the Psychopathic Personality Inventory-Revised (Lee & Park, 2008), students were divided into psychopathic trait (n=15) and control (n=15) groups. Participants performed two tasks consisted of negative(angry, fear, sad) and neutral faces. Event-related potentials(EPRs) were recorded when participants categorized gender in the implicit task and emotion in the explicit task. We analyzed the late positive potentials(LPP) amplitude to investigate differences in emotion processing between psychopathic trait group and control group. In the implicit task, there was no significant difference in both groups. However, there was a significant interaction between emotion and group at the frontocentral region in the explicit task. The psychopathic trait group showed greater LPP amplitudes for the neutral faces than for the negative faces, whereas the control group showed similar LPP amplitudes for the neutral and negative faces at the frontocentral site. These results might reflect the abnormalities in emotional processing in individuals with psychopathic traits.

  • Objectives : Although antipsychotics are commonly used to control symptoms of delirium, there is a lack of research on the prescription pattern and its clinical effects. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of antipsychotics prescription pattern on clinical course of delirious patients consulted to psychiatry. Methods : During the period from July 2016 to February 2017, 212 patients who were referred for delirium were reviewed for their medical records. The duration of delirium was monitored using CAM-ICU, and duration of admission, mortality, and delirium at discharge were reviewed. Clinical course was compared among three groups according to the antipsychotic drug administration pattern: Continuous use group, optimal use group and PRN use group. Results : The pattern of taking antipsychotic medication longer than duration of delirium did not associated with better clinical course compared with the pattern of adapting to the period of delirium and rather increased the risk of taking antipsychotic medication at discharge. When used for a shorter period than the delirium period, it was associated with poor clinical course. Conclusions : The results of this study suggest that a strategy to administer antipsychotics for a minimum period, according to periods of delirium, is appropriate. Also, efforts are needed to minimize the use of antipsychotic drugs after recovery from delirium.

  • The current study was conducted to explore the relations among college students' narcissistic personality, depression, and psychopathy. This study investigated how narcissistic personality and depression variables relate to psychopathy variables. For this purpose, an assessment battery consisting of Narcissistic Personality Inventory(NPI), Narcissistic Personality Disorder Scale: NPDS), BDI, Self-Reported Psychopathy Scale(SRPS), and Psychopathic Personality Inventory-Revised. PPI-R was administered to 1003 college students (501 males and 502 females). For comparison with the levels of pathological narcissism, the participants were devided two groups( above 33%, below 33% ) based on their scores of the NPDS, According to the results, males had more overt narcissistic personality, and females felt more depressive and psychopathic. The higher level group on the NPDS had higher scores on the NPI, BDI, SRPS and PPI-R. The students' narcissistic personality had relations to depression and psychopathy, but the results were different according to the kind of inventories(PPI-R or SRPS, NPI or NPDS). The implications and limitations of this study, as well as some suggestions for future research, were suggested.

  • Object:The goal of this study was to examine the changes in body weight and glucose levels of the patients treated with risperidone, clozapine or haloperidol in order to compare the effect of risperidone or clozapine with that of haloperidol. Methods:For nine months(January to September, 2003), a prospective study was performed in 60 patients with chronic schizophrenia who were in Seoul National Hospital. Two-week period was required for a drug wash-out. The patients were randomly assigned to risperidone, clozapine and haloperidol groups. They were given risperidone(n=20), clozapine(n=20) and haloperidol(n=20), respectively, everyday for 12 weeks. To examine the effects of these drugs on body weight and fasting glucose levels, we measured body weight and glucose levels of all the patients first without the drug treatment and at each end of 4, 8, and 12-week periods with the treatment. And we examined the differences among three groups in the changes of body weight and fasting glucose levels. Results:There were no significant differences in the changes of the body weight and fasting glucose levels between the atypical antipsychotics(risperidone or clozapine) and the typical antipsychotics(haloperidol). Conclusion:The study in the patients with chronic schizophrenia suggests that risperidone or clozapine do not cause any additional effects on body weight or glucose levels compared to haloperidol.
