Effects of Ultrasonic Standing Wave on the Ultrasonically-atomized Aerosol Flame Injected through a Slit-jet Nozzle (Slit-jet 노즐을 통과한 초음파 무화 에어로졸 화염에 정상초음파가 미치는 영향)

  • In liquid-fuel spray combustion, an experimental study was conducted to observe the effect of ultrasonic excitation on the ultrasonically-atomized liquid fuel flame by controlling pressure field through an ultrasonic standing wave. Flame of the ultrasonically-atomized kerosene aerosol was visualized by using a high speed camera, DSLR, and Schlieren photography. The amount of fuel consumed was obtained by a precise flow-rate measurement technique during combustion, through which the ratio of carrier gas (air) to fuel mass was able to be obtained, too. As a result, it could be found that the combustion reaction-rate of the liquid-fuel aerosol was increased by applying an ultrasonic standing wave to the secondary flame zone of the flame.

  • Accuracy of a numerical model with the Hwang's scheme of directly analyzing discontinuous topography could be enhanced by introducing a flux correction coefficient that accounted for the deviation of actual pressure from hydrostatic distribution acting on the front of discontinuous topography. The optimal coefficient was determined from 218 experimental runs for square-edged broad-crested weir and simulation with it showed good agreement with another two square-edged broad-crested weir experiments and an unsteady side-weir experiment. This enabled accurate numerical simulation of shallow-water flow over the discontinuous river structure, such as square-edged broad-crested weir, without alleviating discontinuous topography with refined meshes or imposing internal boundary conditions.

  • In the pipeline for supplying purified water to each household, measurements such as flow meters and pressure meters are installed at important points to monitor in real time. The measured data acquired to the central control room through wireless or wired communication, but data may not be acquired due to intermittent communication failures. Since then, even if the communication network is restored, data during the failure period is not stored on the site, or even if it is stored, data cannot be automatically stored in the database. Low cost with universally installed in the field in order to address these data logging by developing a module is compatible with PLC, automatically would like to make sure that we can recover in the database.

Acoustic Channel Formation and Sound Speed Variation by Low-salinity Water in the Western Sea of Jeju during Summer (여름철 제주 서부해역의 저염분수로 인한 음속변화와 음파채널 형성)

  • Salinity does not generally affect sound speed because it shows very small variations in the ocean. However, low salinity water appears in the Western Sea of Jeju Island every summer so that sound speed and sound propagation can change near sea surface. We calculated Sound Speed Profile (SSP) using vertical profiles of temperature and salinity, which were averaged over years of normal salinity and low salinity (<28 psu) from 30 years (1980~2009) at 3 sites of Korea Oceanographic Data Center (KODC). As a result, sound speed variation by low salinity alone was -5.36 m/s at sea surface and -1.35 m/s at 10m depth for low salinity environments. Gradient of SSP was positive down to 5 m depth due to decrease of sound speed near surface, leading formation of haline channel. Simulation of acoustic propagation using a ray model (Bellhop) confirmed the haline channel. Haline channel has formed 4 times while hydrostatic channel controlled by only pressure has formed 9 times for 30 years. The haline channel showed larger critical angles of rays than hydrostatic channel. Haline channel was also formed at some sites among 20 measurement sites in low salinity water mass which appeared on August $1^{st}$ 2010.

One-dimensional Hydraulic Modeling of Open Channel Flow Using the Riemann Approximate Solver I : Model Development (Riemann 해법을 이용한 1차원 개수로 수리해석Ⅰ: 모형 개발)

  • The object of this study is to develop the model that solves the numerically difficult problems in hydraulic engineering and to demonstrate the applicability of this model by means of various test examples, such as, verification in the gradually varied unsteady condition, three steady flow problems with the change of bottom slope with exact solution, and frictional bed with analytical solution. The governing equation of this model is the integral form of the Saint-Venant equation satisfying the conservation laws, and finite volume method with the Riemann solver is used. The evaluation of the mass and momentum flux with the HLL Riemann approximate solver is executed. MUSCL-Hancock scheme is used to achieve the second order accuracy in space and time. This study introduce the new and simple technique to discretize the source terms of gravity and hydrostatic pressure force due to longitudinal width variation for the balance of quantity between nonlinear flux and source terms. The results show that the developed model's implementation is accurate, robust and highly stable in various flow conditions with source terms, and this model is reliable for one-dimensional applications in hydraulic engineering.

Study on the Steam Line Break Accident for Kori Unit-1 (고리 1호기에 대한 증기배관 파열사고 연구)

  • The steam line break accident for Kori Unit 1 is analyzed by a code SYSRAN which calculates nuclear power and heat flux using the point kinetics equation and the lumped-parameter model and calculates system transient using the mass and energy balance equation with the assumption of uniform reactor coolant system pressure. The 1.4 f $t^2$ steam line break accident is analyzed at EOL (End of Life), hot shutdown condition in which case the accident would be most severe. The steam discharge rate is assumed to follow the Moody critical flow model. The results reveal the peak heat flux of 38% of nominal full power value at 60 second after the accident initiates, which is higher than the FSAR result of 26%. Trends for the transient are in good agreement with FSAR results. A sensitivity study shows that this accident is most sensitive to the moderator density coefficient and the lower plenum mixing factor. The DNBR calculation under the assumption of $F_{{\Delta}H}$=3.66, which is used in the FSAR with all the control and the shutdown assemblies inserted except one B bank assembly and of Fz=1.55 shows that minimum DNBR reaches 1.62 at 60 second, indicating that the fuel failure is not anticipated to occur. The point kinetics equation, the lumped-parameter model and the system transient model which uses the mass and energy balance equation are verified to be effective to follow the system transient phenomena of the nuclear power plants.lear power plants.

Experimental Analysis of a Supersonic Plasma Wind Tunnel Using a Segmented Arc Heater with the Power Level of 0.4 MW (0.4 MW 급 분절형 아크 히터를 이용한 초음속 플라즈마 풍동 특성 실험)

  • Experimental analyses on a supersonic plasma wind tunnel of CBNU (Chonbuk National University) were carried out. In these experiments, a segmented arc heater was employed as a plasma source and operated at the gas flow rates of 16.3 g/s and the total currents of 300 A. The input power reached ~350 kW with the torch efficiency of 51.4 %, which is defined as the ratio of total exit enthalpy to the input power. The pressure of plasma gas in the arc heater was measured up to 4 bar while it was down to ~45 mbar in a vacuum chamber through a Laval nozzle. During this conversion process, the generated supersonic plasma was expected to have a total enthalpy of ~11 MJ/kg from the measured input power and torch efficiency. In addition to the measurement of total enthalpy, a cone type probe was inserted into the supersonic plasma flow in order to estimate the angle between shock layer and surface of the probe. From these measurements, the temperature and the Mach number of the supersonic plasma were predicted as ~2,950 K and ~3.7, respectively.

A Study on the Effect of Rudder Area with Reference to Changes in Span Distance on Course Stability of a Ship (타의 스팬길이에 따른 면적 변화가 침로안정성에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구)

  • Especially in the case of a full form ship, the stability on course can be considered to become severest among 4 items of criteria in Interim Standards for Ship Maneuverability adopted by IMO in 1993. The purpose of this study is to find some ideas for the improvement of stability on course through changes in rudder area with reference to span distance. In this paper, we established the formula on the relation between the experimental constants relevant to rudder normal force and hydrodynamic derivatives of hull-propeller-rudder system. We carried out various kinds of captive model test relevant to rudder normal force etc., and evaluated hydrodynamic derivatives of hull-propeller-rudder system, and analyzed the stability on course with the parameter of changes in rudder area. Furthermore, we also discussed effects of changes in rudder area on maneuvering performance including stability on course, based on computer simulation. As a result, it is clarified that there is a possibility that stability on course may become bad through an increase of rudder area. The reason for the bad stability on course is that the void space between the upper edge of rudder and the lower part of stern overhang decreases. This space change exerts a great influence on straightening coefficient of incoming flow to rudder in maneuvering motion, which has close relation to stability on course.

  • 금속재료 중 철강은 기계적 성질이 우수하고 대량생산에 의한 뛰어난 경제성을 가지기 때문에 다양한 산업 분야에서 널리 사용되고 있다. 그러나 스테인리스강 등과 같은 일부 특수한 용도의 강을 제외하고는 부식 환경에 취약하기 때문에 그 용도에 따라 표면처리를 함으로서 내식특성을 부여하고 있다. 일반적으로 이러한 철강재료에 대한 부식문제를 해결하기 위한 방법으로는 습식프로세스 중 아연(Zn)도금이 사용되는데, 아연은 그 자체가 보유하고 있는 차폐(barrier)효과는 물론 상대적으로 이온화 경향이 크기 때문에 철에 대하여 전자를 공급하는 희생양극적(Sacrificial anode)역할을 하여 철을 방식하는 원리를 가지고 있다. 하지만 최근에 이르러 기존의 도금 프로세스 처리된 제품의 사용 및 적용분야가 확대되고 가혹해 짐에 따라서 내식성 향상을 위한 새로운 재료 및 신기술 개발이 요구되고 있는 실정이다. 본 연구에서는 친환경 프로세스 방법인 PVD법 중 하나인 스퍼터링(Sputtering)을 이용하여 0.8mm 두께의 냉연강판 (cold rolled steel) 상에 Al에 대한 Mg 함량을 10~30wt.%로 하여 약 $5{\mu}m$ 두께의 막을 제작하였다. 이때 20wt.% 막의 경우 공정압력조건을 증가시켜 증착 막의 결정배향성을 변화시켰다. 뿐만 아니라 제작된 막들에 대해서 $400^{\circ}C$온도에서 10분간 열처리함으로서 코팅막의 성분변화에 따른 영향을 살펴보기 위해 시편을 추가 제작하였다. 이와 같이 제작된 막들에 대한 형성메커니즘과 내식성의 상관관계 해명을 위해 막의 조성분포, 표면 및 단면의 모폴로지 관찰 및 결정구조 등 재료특성분석과 더불어 염수분무(Salt spray test), 침지시험 그리고 양극분극 시험 등을 통해 내식성 평가를 진행하였다. 이상의 종합적인 결과를 살펴보면 제작된 Al-Mg 막은 마그네슘 함량비 및 열처리 조건에 따라 조성분포와 막의 모폴로지 및 결정배향성이 변화한다는 것을 알 수 있었는데, 마그네슘 함량이 증가하고 열처리한 막의 내식성이 가장 양호한 것으로 나타났다. 이것은 Al-Mg 성분이 표면을 중심으로 균일 분산-분포하며, Al에 대한 Mg의 고용으로 인해 안정적으로 형성된 부식생성물과 금속화합물의 단계적 반응 효과에 의해 차폐효과와 희생양극적 특성이 동시에 향상되었기 때문으로 생각된다. 한편 공정 압력을 증가시켜 형성한 막은 결정학적 구조에서 보다 높은 표면 에너지와 증가한 격자 정수에 의해 Mg이 부식환경에서 빠르게 반응하여 안정적 피막을 형성하기 때문에 내식성이 향상된 것으로 보여 진다. 이상의 연구를 통해서 고내식성을 Al-Mg막의 유효성 확인하였으며, 설계에 대한 기초적인 응용지침을 제시할 수 있을 것으로 사료된다.

A study on removal of 1,4-dioxane in drinking water by multi filtration system (다단계 필터시스템에서의 음용수 중 1,4-Dioxane 제거)

  • Recently, 1,4-Dioxane is known as the contaminant in water plants in Korea. Owing to its toxicity and potential health effect, 1,4-Dioxane must be determined at very low levels in drinking water. Studies on the removal of 1,4-Dioxane in drinking water were performed by using multi filtration system with activated carbons and membrane filter. For extraction of 1,4-Dioxane, methyl-t-butyl ether (MTBE) was used and then analyzed using gas chromatography-mass selective detection (GC/MSD). Removal experiment was proceeded for 300 L with a sample volume of 30 L. At first. The removal was 70%, 95% and 100% after using activated carbon, membrane and second activated carbon respectively. At larger accumulated water fluxes, the removal rate decreased at each filter. After the flow volume was 300 L, the removal rate was 30%, 88% and 99% through the first activated carbon, membrane and second activated carbon respectively.
