  • The domestic auger-drilled pile method generally manages the driving penetration (set) value with the final stage of construction. The penetration value has been estimated by manual measurement for a long time. The automation technology is yet to be applied due to workability and high-cost limitations, despite safety issues and lack of reliability in measured results. In this study, a non-contact pile penetration measurement device was developed. Further, the field performance was verified by comparing the measurements with a conventional automation device. In addition, the on-site field quality control method was analyzed using the penetration measuring device. The field experiments confirmed that more reliable bearing capacity estimation could calculate the dynamic damping coefficient and the modified Hiley formula with the developed device. Furthermore, it can be used for pile construction management from the bearing capacity viewpoint, even for piles not subjected to dynamic load tests.

  • Various geophysical exploration methods are used to determine the exact location of underground utilities, and many studies have been performed to improve the accuracy. This study analyzed the feasibility of exploring underground utilities through a new exploration method using cosmic ray muon. A prototype of a portable muon detector was manufactured by combining a scintillator and a silicon photomultiplier. Further, a calibration operation was performed on the muon count rate. The ground thickness of the ground model was measured using the muon detector prototype, where the value could be estimated with an error of about 3%, close to the actual. In addition, the theoretical basis for tomography analysis technology was analyzed to utilize the muon detector for exploring underground utilities, and a zenith angle correction method was presented. This study revealed that the technology of exploration using muon can analyze density with high resolution and will be used for exploring underground utilities.

  • Virtual humans are implemented with dedicated modeling tools like Unity 3D Engine in virtual space (virtual reality, mixed reality, metaverse, etc.). Various human modeling tools have been introduced to implement virtual human-like appearance, voice, expression, and behavior similar to real people, and virtual humans implemented via these tools can communicate with users to some extent. However, most of the virtual humans so far have stayed unimodal using only text or speech. As AI technologies advance, the outdated machine-centered dialogue system is now changing to a human-centered, natural multi-modal system. By using several pre-trained networks, we implemented an emotion-based multi-modal dialogue system, which generates human-like utterances and displays appropriate facial expressions in real-time.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to identify the doctor-patient relationship perceived by doctors in clinical settings and the effect of doctor-patient relationships on treatment schemes. A qualitative case study was conducted for this purpose. Methods: In-depth interviews were conducted with five oriental medicine doctors and doctors working in clinical settings using a semi-structured questionnaire. Transcription and coding were performed to analyze the data. By analyzing each case individually through within-case analysis, we attempted to find themes that emerged from the research subjects' experiences with establishing relationships with patients. Afterward, a cross-case analysis was conducted to identify the meaning of the experiences through commonalities and differences. Results: Within-case analysis confirmed the thoughts and emotions of the research participants in recognizing, defining, and participating in doctor-patient relationships while delivering treatments. Case-to-case analysis derived two themes, seven categories, and 20 meaningful units for doctor-patient relationships. Conclusions: The study found that a doctor-patient relationship regarding patient treatment could be established based on the doctor's 'professional qualifications' and 'human qualities'. In the future, it is necessary to present an educational model for relationship-based intervention techniques and personality maturity. Follow-up research should be conducted to enable the establishment of therapeutic relationships between doctors and patients.

  • To enhance immersive experiences for metaverse environements, background music is often used. However, the background music is mostly pre-matched and repeated which might occur a distractive experience to users as it does not align well with rapidly changing user-interactive contents. Thus, we implemented a system to provide a more immersive metaverse conversation experience by 1) developing a regression neural network that extracts emotions from an utterance using KEMDy20, the Korean multimodal emotion dataset 2) selecting music corresponding to the extracted emotions from an utterance by the DEAM dataset where music is tagged with arousal-valence levels 3) combining it with a virtual space where users can have a real-time conversation with avatars.

  • The objective of this study was to develop a management strategy for the recovery of carbon storage capacity of abandoned coal mine forest rehabilitation area. For the purpose, the biomass and stand carbon storage over time after the forest rehabilitation by tree type for Betula platyphylla, Pinus densiflora, and Alnus hirsuta trees which are major tree species widely planted for the forest rehabilitation in the abandoned coal mine were calculated, and compared them with general forest. The carbon storage in abandoned coal mine forest rehabilitation areas was lower than that in general forests, and based on tree species, Pinus densiflora stored 48.9%, Alnus hirsuta 41.1%, and Betula platyphylla 27.0%. This low carbon storage is thought to be caused by poor growth because soil chemical properties, such as low TOC and total nitrogen content, in the soil of abandoned coal mine forest rehabilitation areas, were adverse to vegetation growth compared to those in general forests. DBH, stand biomass, and stand carbon storage tended to increase after forest rehabilitation over time, whereas stand density decreased. Stand' biomass and carbon storage increased as DBH and stand density increased, but there was a negative correlation between stand density and DBH. Therefore, after forest rehabilitation, growth status should be monitored, an appropriate growth space for trees should be maintained by thinning and pruning, and the soil chemical properties such as fertilization must be managed. It is expected that the carbon storage capacity the forest rehabilitation area could be restored to a level similar to that of general forests.

  • The advancement in large-scale underground excavation in urban areas necessitates monitoring and predicting technologies that can pre-emptively mitigate risk factors at construction sites. Traditionally, two methods predict the deformation of retaining walls induced by excavation: empirical and numerical analysis. Recent progress in artificial intelligence technology has led to the development of a predictive model using machine learning techniques. This study developed a model for predicting the deformation of a retaining wall under construction using a boosting-based algorithm and an ensemble model with outstanding predictive power and efficiency. A database was established using the data from the design-construction-maintenance process of the underground retaining wall project in a manifold manner. Based on these data, a learning model was created, and the performance was evaluated. The boosting and ensemble models demonstrated that wall deformation could be accurately predicted. In addition, it was confirmed that prediction results with the characteristics of the actual construction process can be presented using data collected from ground measurements. The predictive model developed in this study is expected to be used to evaluate and monitor the stability of retaining walls under construction.

  • The steel pipe of steel-concrete composite piles increases the pile strength and induces the ductile failure by constraining the deformation of the hiller concrete. In this research, the load-movement relations and the reinforcement effect by the outer steel pipe in the steel-concrete composite pile were analyzed by performing three-dimensional numerical analyses, which can simulate the yielding behavior of pile material and the elasto-plastic behavior of soils. The parameters analyzed in the study include three pile materials of steel, concrete and composite, pile diameter, pile distance and loading direction. The results showed that the axial capacity of the composite pile was about 90% larger than that of the steel pipe pile while similar to that of the concrete pile. At the allowable movement criteria, the horizontal capacity of the composite pile was about 50% lager than that of the steel pile and about 22% larger than that of the concrete pile.

  • The steel pipe of steel-concrete composite drilled shafts increases the pile strength and induces the ductile failure by constraining the deformation of the inner concrete. In this research, pile loading tests were performed to analyze the field applicability of a steel-concrete composite drilled shafts. The test ground consisted of 5~7 m thick soil underlying rock mass. The test piles consisted of two steel-concrete composite drilled shafts, which were the concrete filled steel pipe piles with the diameter of 0.508 m, and a concrete pile with the same diameter. The test results showed that the boundary between the upper steel composite section and the lower concrete section was structurally weak and needs to be reinforced by using a inner steel cage. If the boundary is located in deep depth, which is not influenced by lateral load, the allowable strength of the lower concrete section increases, so an economical design can be performed by increasing the design load of steel-concrete composite drilled shafts.

  • A bridge scour management system is developed to evaluate the vulnerability of bridge piers to scour and to help establish effective disaster measures, taking into account the locality and scour characteristics in Korea. This system is programmed using the techniques of the geographical information system(GIS) for the storage, retrieval, and display of information regarding to bridge scour. The system functions are basically divided into two parts; prioritization and maintenance. Bridges are initially screened and prioritized for bridge scour inspection and evaluation using the basic information which is obtained from the office review. The bridge scour evaluation including site investigation is performed and the vulnerability of bridge piers is categorized into six groups taking into account the local scour depth, foundation bearing capacity, foundation type, foundation depth, and present scour condition. The system tabulates and plots all the data and the results.
