KNCAP is a program to evaluate the automobile safety, providing consumer vehicle safety assessment results. The safety evaluation tests are Frontal Impact, Offset Frontal Crash, Side Crash, Side Pole Crash, Rear Impact. This is the study of the offset frontal impact safety evaluation. Currently, IIHS is performing a small overlap test. NHTSA plans to implement the oblique moving deformable barrier test. Euro-NCAP plans to implement a mobile frontal impact test. Simulation is used to compare occupant behavior and injury. We have investigated whether the introduction of the test at KNCAP is necessary. The dummy model used in the simulation was the 50th percentile male Hybrid III dummy.
In this study, a chest deflection is predicted by introducing a deep learning technique with the results of the frontal impact of the USNCAP conducted for 110 car models from MY2018 to MY2020. The 120 data are divided into training data and test data, and the training data is divided into training data and validation data to determine the hyperparameters. In this process, the deceleration data of each vehicle is averaged in units of 10 ms from crash pulses measured up to 100 ms. The performance of the deep learning model is measured by the indices of the mean squared error and the mean absolute error on the test data. A DNN (Deep Neural Network) model can give different predictions for the same hyperparameter values at every run. Considering this, the mean and standard deviation of the MSE (Mean Squared Error) and the MAE (Mean Absolute Error) are calculated. In addition, the deep learning model performance according to the inclusion of CVW (Curb Vehicle Weight) is also reviewed.
As the popularization of autonomous vehicles is anticipated, it is expected that the variety of passenger postures will diversify. However, the current vehicle safety system is expected to be inadequate for accommodating these diverse passenger postures, particularly in reclined positions where severe injuries have been reported in frontal collisions. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the biomechanical responses and tolerances of occupants in reclined postures. In this study, the behavior and injuries of a Hybrid-III dummy model in a reclined position are analyzed through frontal collision sled simulations equipped with the semi-rigid seat provided by the previous study, three-point safety belt with pretensioner and load limiter, and airbag models. The results are evaluated by comparing thouse reponses with post-mortem human surrogate (PMHS) data, and the findings are expected to be applicable to the basic design of a new restraint system suitable for various postures in autonomous vehicles.
In this study, the crashworthiness analysis was carried out for the hat type section side rails which had an important role of absorbing the impact energy during frontal crash. In case of a tapered hat type section model, numerical simulation models and test models were designed with varing design variables; welding pitch, taper angle, initiator shape, initiator location. The effect of variation of the design variables was investigated by quasi-static and dynamic test and numerical simulation.
For the weight reduction of vehicle body up to 20∼30% compared to the conventional monocoque steel body·.in-white, most automotive manufacturers have attempted to develop the aluminum intensive body-in-white using an aluminum space frame. In this paper, the crush tests and simulations for the aluminum extrusions filled with the structural from are performed to evaluate the collapse characteristics of that light weighted material. From these studies. the effectiveness of structural for is evaluated in improving automotive crashworthiness. In order to improve the improve energy absorption capability of the aluminum space frame body, safety design modifications are performed and analyzed based on the suggested collapse initiator concepts and on the application of the aluminum extrusions filled with structural foam. The effectiveness of these design concepts on the frontal and side impact characteristics of the aluminum intensive vehicle structure is investigated and summarized.
Since 2000, sports utility vehicles(SUVs) occupy about 40% of domestic vehicle sales. As sports utility vehicle sales are increased the probability of crash accident between SUVs and passenger vehicles increases. Generally, SUVs are heavier than passenger vehicles and their drive height and front end stillness are higher than passenger vehicles. Because of these characteristics SUVs cause more severe injury and fatal injury in SUV to passenger vehicle head-on impact. To evaluate SUV's aggessivity to passenger vehicle, we carried out SUV to passenger vehicle head-on crash test. And finally the way how to reduce incompatibility between SUVs and passenger vehicles is suggested.
The car crash accidents in low speed occurs most frequently. Damage on a conventional bumper after the car accident causes the bumper to get fixed most of time. This study shows how a gas tube bumper reduces a damageability and increase repairability after the car accidents. The 15 km/h 40% offset front and rear crash test recommended by RCAR (Research council for automobile repairs) standard was performed and evaluated damages on the gas tube bumper by the pendulum impact tester. In this study, the gas tube bumper reduces damageability and increases repairability after car crash accidents. In addition, car frame design to apply the gas tube bumper may consider to be changed.
One of the most important factors that affect a person's risk of injury in a motor vehicle crash is the age of the person. This study investigates the characteristics of crash injuries among young, middle-aged and older drivers and occupants. Based on the comprehensive claim data from automobile insurance from 2000 to 2007, this study examines in great detail the drivers and occupants injury body regions and severity by age in car-to-car frontal crashes. It has been shown that elderly drivers and occupants suffer more injuries at a chest region compared to the middle-aged group. This research calls attention to the need for design to make vehicles more protective for older drivers in car-to car frontal crashes.
