  • In an efforts to encourage renewable energy deployment, the government has initiated so called 1 million green homes program but the accumulated installation capacity of small wind turbine has been about 70kW. It can be explained in several ways such that current subsidy program does not meet public expectations, economic feasibility of wind energy is in doubt or acoustic emission is significant etc. The author investigated annual energy production of Skystream 3.7 wind turbine using measured power curve and wind resource data. The measured power curve of the small wind turbine was obtained through power performance tests at Wol-Ryoung test site. AEP(Annual Energy Production) and CF(Capacity Factor) were evaluated at selected locations with the measured power curve.

  • This paper relates to a method of modeling the thrust dynamic load caused by the thrust variation occurring on the blade due to the tower shadow below the rated wind speed. A method that uses thrust coefficient is presented by introducing "tower shadow coefficient of thrust variation". For a 2MW wind turbine, the values of "tower shadow coefficient of thrust variation" are calculated and analyzed at wind speeds below the rated. The dynamic load model of thrust under tower shadow is evaluated in Matlab/Simulink using the obtained "tower shadow coefficient of thrust variation" and thrust coefficient. It shows that the thrust variations acting on the three blades by the tower shadow can be expressed using both the thrust coefficient and the introduced "tower shadow coefficient of thrust variation".

  • Wide operating range and speed control is needed for wind power generating and a Doubly Fed Induction Generator(DFIG) has good adaptivity for that purpose. This paper deals with the speed, power, and power factor control using the Grid connected DFIG in the super-synchronous speed regions, by controlling frequency and voltage fed to the rotor. Power flow of the DFIG and steady-state algebraic equations of the equivalent circuit are analyzed. The wind turbine speed and constant stator power were controlled by the rotor exciting frequency. For a normal operating region, in which the generator ratings were not exceeded, rotor exciting frequency. For a normal operating region, in which the generator ratings were not exceeded, the rotor current was either less than or equal to the rated value. Accordingly, the optimal power factor can be selected relative to the permissible rated current at the rotor coil which controls the magnitude of the injected rotor voltage to the rotor according to a given rotor frequency. Consequently, it is possible to determine the optimal drive of a DFIG for wind power generation application.

  • Now, the study is activity that the energy market depending on a fossil fuel tend to change different way. In middle of the study compositive use of renewable energy(fuel cell and wind power, solar cell, etc.) is dispersion power system which concern is increasing. But in the case of generation of electric wind power system is changeable to be turbulence and wind and win speed are changeable in several seconds, so making the best of wind energy the MPPT that role in this case is important. In this paper suggest a MPPT which is making a use of information of wind speed and turning speed, windmill, electric power but it is simpler than former way. We could verify that a proposed controller working at the highest point of electric power when wind speed is regular speed and changable speed through the simulation.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the structural stability of a low speed 200 W class gyromill type vertical axis wind turbine system. For the analysis, a commercial code is adopted. The pressure distribution on the rotor blade surface is examined in detail. In order to perform unidirectional FSI(Fluid-Structure Interaction) analysis, the pressure resulted from CFD analysis has been mapped on the surface of wind turbine as load condition. The rotational speed and gravitational force of wind turbine are also considered. The results of FSI analysis show that the wind turbine reveals an enough structural margin. The maximum structural displacement occurs at trailing edge of blade and the maximum stress occurs at the strut.

  • A wind tunnel test for 1/86 scaled down model of the NREL 5 MW offshore wind turbine was conducted to investigate the wake and flow fields. Deficit of flow speed in the wake region and variations of the turbulence intensity were measured using a hot wire anemometer at rated tip speed ratio of 11.4 m/s and a rotational speed of 1,045 rpm. According to the test results, velocity deficits along both of lateral and vertical directions were recovered within 2 rotor radii downstream from the rotating disc plane. The tip vortices effect was negligible after 5 rotor radii downstream from the rotating plane. Turbulence intensities showed maximum value around the blade tip, and decreased rapidly after one radius apart from the rotating plane, and those values were preserved until 6 rotor radii downstream.

  • The main objective of this study is to predict the wind power generation at the wind farm using various wake models. Modeling of wind farm is a prerequisite for prediction of annual energy production at the wind farm. In this study, we modeled 20 MW class Seongsan wind farm which has 10 wind turbines located at the eastern part of Jeju Island. WindSim based on the computational fluid dynamics was adopted for the estimation of power generation. The power curve and thrust coefficient with meteorology file were prepared for wind farm modelling. The meteorology file was produced based on the measured data of the Korea Wind Atlas provided by Korea Institute of Energy Research. Three types of wake models such as Jensen, Larsen, and Ishihara et al. wake models were applied to investigate the wake effects. From the result, Jensen and Ishihara wake models show nearly the same value of power generation whereas the Larsen wake model shows the largest value. New positions of wind turbines are proposed to reduce the wake loss, and to increase the annual energy production of the wind farm.

  • In this paper, the structural design for composite blade was performed and full scale structural test was conducted to verify the structural design and integrity of composite blade. Firstly, FE analysis was performed using commercial software ABAQUS under conditions of rated wind speed and Case H in IEC 61400-2. Lay-up sequence and ply thickness were designed based on FE results. And to verify the structural design, full scale structural test was conducted according to IEC 61400-2 under identical loading conditions of FE analysis. Finally, the force-deflection and local strain behavior of composite blade were evaluated.

  • To establish a floating offshore wind turbine simulation model, a tension leg platform is added to an onshore wind turbine. The wind load is calculated by using meteorological administration data and a power law that defines the wind velocity according to the height from the sea surface. The wind load is applied to the blade and wind tower at a regular distance. The relative Morison equation is employed to generate the wave load. The rated rotor speed (18 rpm) is applied to the hub as a motion. The dynamic behavior of a 2-MW floating offshore wind turbine subjected to the wave excitation and wind load is analyzed. The flexible effects of the wind tower and the blade are analyzed. The flexible model of the wind tower and blade is established to examine the natural frequency of the TLP-type offshore wind turbine. To study the effect of the flexible tower and blade on the floating offshore wind turbine, we modeled the flexible tower model and flexible tower-blade model and compared it with a rigid model.
