  • This study presents a finite element simulation of elastic waves for detecting anti-symmetric damages in an adhesively-bonded single lap joint. Plane strain elements were used for modeling adherents (aluminum) and adhesives (epoxy). Three types of damage were introduced: thickness reduction, elasticity deterioration, and voids in the adhesive layers, and two excitation and reception arrangements (ER1 and ER2) were used to investigate the detectability of the damage. The simulation showed that symmetrically located damage, such as a thickness reduction, can be detected by one excitation and one reception arrangement (ER1) and anti-symmetric damages, such as elasticity deterioration and voids, can be detected by modified two-point elastic wave excitation (ER2). Compared with the ER1 arrangement, the ER2 arrangement does not require a baseline signal for damage detection; hence, an efficient method of anti-symmetric damage detection in an adhesively-bonded single lap joint is proposed.

  • This paper introduces a new theory, that in a stiffened plate, a steel stiffener could be substituted a composite material in order to prevent from buckling. Changing a steel stiffener into a composite material would not only preclude welding, but could also prevent damage to the material due to fatigue and corrosion.A composite material is assumed to adhere to a steel plate, and is never separated from the plate until the steel plate reaches buckling.Such plate has variable shapes, with different lengths and widths, and also shows an anisotropic material property. LUSAS, a commercial finite element analysis package, was used in the buckling analysis. This paper investigated buckling behavior in anisotropic composite plates with variable parameters.

  • This paper concerns the stress singularity at the interface corner of the viscoelastic adhesive layer bonded between rigid adherends, subjected to a uniform transverse tensile strain. The characteristic equation is derived in the Laplace transformed space, following Williams, and the transformed characteristic equation is inverted analytically into real time space for the viscoelastic model considered here. The order of the singularity is obtained numerically. The time-domain boundary element method is employed to investigate the nature of stresses along the interface. Numerical results show that the order of the singularity increases with time while the free-edge stress intensity factors are relaxed with time.

  • This study performed the progressive failure analysis of adhesive joints of a composite pressure vessel with a separated dome by using a cohesive zone model. In order to determine the input parameters of a cohesive element for numerical analysis, the interlaminar fracture toughness values in modes I and II and in the mixed mode for the adhesive joints of the composite pressure vessel were obtained by a material test. All specimens were manufactured by the filament winding method. A mechanical test was performed on adhesively bonded double-lap joints to determine the shear strength of the adhesive joints and verify the reliability of the cohesive zone model for progressive failure analysis. The test results showed that the shear strength of the adhesive joints was 32MPa; the experiment and analysis results had an error of about 4.4%, indicating their relatively good agreement. The progressive failure analysis of a composite pressure vessel with an adhesively bonded dome performed using the cohesive zone model showed that only 5.8% of the total adhesive length was debonded and this debonded length did not affect the structural integrity of the vessel.

  • Advantages of adhesively bonded joints and techniques of weight reduction have led to increasing use of structural adhesives such as LSI(large scale integration) package, automobile, aircraft in the various industries. In spite of such wide applications of adhesively bonded joints, the evaluation method of bonding strength has not been established. Stress singularity occurs at the interface edges of adhesively bonded joints and it is required to analyze it. In this paper, the stress singularity using 2-dimensional elastic boundary element method (BEM) with the changes of the lap length and adhesive for single lap joint was analyzed, and experiments of strength evaluation were carried out. As the results, the evaluating method of bonding strength considering stress singularity at interface edges of adhesively bonded joints and stress intensity factor of interface crack have been proposed in static and fatigue test.

  • The stress state developed in a thin adhesive layer bonded between the semiconductor chip and the leadframe and subjected to a shear loading is investigated. The boundary element method (BEM) is employed to investigate the behavior of interface stresses. Within the context of a linear elastic theory, a stress singularity of type $\gamma^{\lambda=1}$(0<1<1) exists at the point where the interface between one of the rigid adherends and the adhesive layer intersects the free surface. Such singularity might lead to edge crack or delamination.

  • A method of strength evaluation applying fracture mechanics in the adhesively bonded joints of Al/Steel dissimilar materials was investigated in this paper. Various shapes of adhesively bonded Al/Steel scarf joints focussing on fracture criterion of mixed mode crack were prepared for the static tests. Also, stress intensity factors of the interface cracks in adhesively bonded joints of Al/Steel dissimilar materials were analyzed with 2-dimensional elastic program of boundary element method(BEM), and the experiment of fracture toughness were carried out under various mixed mode conditions. From the results, the fracture criterion and method of strength evaluation by the fracture toughness in adhesively bonded joints of Al/Steel dissimilar materials were proposed.

  • This article discusses the use of pulse-echo ultrasonic testing for the stress analysis of adhesive bonds between metal sheets. The method is based on the measurement of the reflection wave at the metal/adhesive interface. After describing briefly the physical aspects of the phenomenon, an index is defined to detect defective zone of the joint(both for the lack of adhesive and for insufficient adhesion); the influence of the experimental variables(variables stress...) on the measurement is discussed. By means of a control experiment it is shown that Stress Variation in Adhesive Joints are separate to be distingguished. In this paper, Quantitative Nondestructive Evaluation in Adhesive Joints are together with Ultrasonic Testing and Finite Element Method.

  • In is well recognized that the ultrasonic method is one of the most common and reliable nondestructive testing(NDT) methods for the quantitative estimation of defects in welded structures. However, NDT techniques applying for adhesively bonded joints have not been clearly established yet. In this paper, the detection of interface crack by the ultrasonic method was applied for the measurement of interface crack length in the adhesively bonded joints of double-cantilever beam(DCB). The optimum condition of transmission coefficients and experimental accuracy by the ultrasonic method in the adhesively bonded joints have been investigated. The experimental values are in good agreement with the computed results by boundary element method(BEM) and Riplings equation.
