  • Recently, fabrication process of thermoplastic polyamide-based composites with recyclability as well as impact, chemical, and abrasion resistance have been widely studied. In particular, thermoplastic reactive resin transfer molding (TRTM) in which monomer with low viscosity is injected and in-situ polymerized inside mold has received a great attention, because thermoplastic melts are hard to impregnate fiber preform due to their very high viscosity. However, it is difficult to optimize the processing conditions because of high reactivity and sensitivity to external environments of the used monomer, ε-caprolactam. In this study, viscosity as an important process parameter in TRTM was measured during in-situ anionic polymerization of ε-caprolactam and the solutions for problems caused by high polymerization rate and sensitivity to moisture and oxygen were suggested. Reliability of the improved measurement technique was verified by comparing the viscosity behavior at various environmental conditions including humidity and atmosphere, and it is expected to be helpful for optimization of TRTM process.

  • Pregelitinized rice (PR), pregelitinized waxy rice (PWR), and pregelitinized rice flour (PRF) were evaluated for physico-chemical properties comparing with rice starch and acetylated potato starch. L value was decreased during drum drying. PFR had the highest value (P<0.05) for water absorption index and PWR had the highest value for water solubility index. Transmittance of gelitinized samples had drastically increased at $80{\sim}90^{\circ}C$. PWR had the highest value for apparent viscosity and rice samples had a steady apparent viscosity during heating at $90^{\circ}C$. Viscosity was decreased as pH decreased at room temperature and drastically decreased below pH 2. Rice starch and PR had no significant effect for change of pH. Change of viscosity had more effect for hot temp. than room temp.. Pregelitinized samples showed only second peak for DSC. PWR had the lowest value for degree of retrogradation and acetylated potato starch had the highest value for freeze-thaw-stability.

  • Emulsification is a fundamental process of cosmetics manufacture which produces stabilized emulsion by dispersing the liquid from the one side to the other by adding an emulsifier in an immiscible liquid. Various types of emulsifiers can produce various cosmetics. In this study, we evaluated the stability of emulsifier by measuring variations in the viscosity, particle size and particle size distribution. HLB values of nonionic emulsifiers which are used in this paper are 12.9, 12.9, 12.6 and 12.5 for EMU-01, EMU-02, EMU-03 and EMU-04, respectively. All types of emulsions showed an increase in the particle size and a decrease in the viscosity with the time. Also they showed a decrease in the particle size and an increase in the viscosity with respect to increasing the stirring speed. However, the stability of emulsions up to 56 days was secured by observing the non-separation of emulsions. In addition, the viscosity of the emulsions was measured in the order of EMU-01 > EMU-02 > EMU-03 > EMU-04 while the size of particles was measured in the order of $EMU-01{\approx}EMU-02$ > $EMU-03{\approx}EMU-04$. This indicates that our emulsion can be potentially used for preparing a cosmetic facial cream.

  • We prepared puffed instant Nuroong-gi samples using a microwave and investigated the physicochemical characteristics of the products. The quality of Nuroong-gi prepared using a microwave was compared with that of noodles prepared in a steam cooker and pressure cooker in terms of moisture content, color, water binding capacity ratio, viscosity, sedimented volume of insoluble solids, turbidity, and sensory evaluation. The moisture content of Nuroong-gi prepared in a microwave was similar to that of steam cooker and pressure cooker samples. The color (lightness) of steam cooker-prepared noodles was greater than that of noodles cooked using other modes. The water binding capacity ratio fell with increasing microwave cooking time. The viscosity of noodles prepared using a microwave was higher than that of pressure cooker samples and lower than that of steam cooker noodles. The sedimented volume of insoluble solids and turbidity increased with a rise in cooking temperature. Nuroong-gi prepared in a microwave scored higher in sensory evaluation tests than did steam cooker or pressure cooker samples. These results indicate that Nuroong-gi preparation using a microwave is very efficient.

  • In a foaming process of microcellular plastics (MCPs) with a injection molding, research on the viscosity change that occurs when the gas is injected to the polymer has received little attention despite its importance. The purpose of this paper is to provide the basic data required to determine the processing condition by measuring viscosity changes against the gas injection rates of the blowing agent, and to verify the influence of the viscosity change on the flow condition of polymer inside the mold at the injection process.

  • The moisturizing effect and stability of a cream containing 0.25 % Inula britannica flower ethyl acetate fraction were investigated. The pH, viscosity, and absorbance were measured under 4 different temperature conditions(4, 20, 37, and $45^{\circ}C$) and under the sun light at 2 week intervals for 12 weeks. The variations in pH and viscosity of all experimental creams were similar to those of control cream. The absorbance variations of the extract from experimental cream at 330 nm were in the order: under the sun > 45 > 37 > 25 > $4^{\circ}C$. It shows that ethyl acetate fraction in the cream can be oxidized under the sun. In addition, any change in color or smell was not observed through 12 weeks of the experimental period. These results showed that the cream were stable. Accordingly, it is suggested that further study is needed to provide more information to the manufacturers, who are seeking for the application of the extract to improve the anti-oxidant and antibacterial activities and stability of cosmetic products.

  • 10% salted egg yolk containing 12-21% e99 white (RI 42-45) was stored at $-15^{\circ}C\;and\;-25^{\circ}C$. Changes of appearent viscosity and emulsification capacity were measured monthly(1-6 months). Viscosity, oil particle size and emulsion stability of mayonnaise which was prepared with these yolks for each storage time were also tested . In salted e99 yolk, viscosity was increased gradually with increasing the storage time, and further increased in the yolk of less egg white (higher RI), stored at $-25^{\circ}C\;than\;-15^{\circ}C$. Emulsification capacity was decreased gradually with increasing the storage time. In mayonnaise, which was Prepared with these frozen egg folks, oil Particle size became smaller gradually with increasing the storage time of egg folk, and further became smaller in the egg yolks containing low levels of egg white , stored at $-25^{\circ}C\;than\;-15^{\circ}C$. The viscosity of mayonnaise was decreased by about 2 months storage of e99 yolk, and restored thereafter, emulsion stability was decreased by 3-4 months storage of egg yolk and restored slightly thereafter.

  • The recently developed marine engines for propulsion of ships have higher torsional exciting force than previous engines to improve the propulsion efficiency and to reduce specific fuel oil consumption. As a result, a viscous damper or viscous-spring damper is installed in front of marine engine to control the torsional vibration. In the case of viscous damper, it is supposed that there is no elastic connection in the silicon oil, which is filled between the damper housing and inertia ring. However, In reality, the silicon oil with high viscosity possesses torsional stiffness and has non-linear dynamic characteristics according to the operating temperature and frequency of the viscous damper. In this study, the damping characteristics of a viscous damper used to control the torsional vibration of the shafting system have been reviewed and the characteristics of torsional vibration of the shafting system equipped with a corresponding viscous damper have been examined. In addition, it is examined how to interpret the theoretically optimal dynamic characteristics of a viscous damper for this purpose, and the optimum design for the propulsion shafting system has been suggested considering the operating temperature and aging. when the torsional vibration of the shafting system is controlled by a viscous damper filled with highly viscous silicon oil.
