  • A new digital pre-distortion (DPD) technique for closely spaced dual-band signals is proposed. In the system under consideration, dual-band signals are amplified by a single broadband power amplifier (PA) at a transmitter. The PA output is distorted by cross-modulation between the two bands as well as their own inter-modulation distortion. Especially, if the two bands are placed in close proximity to each other, their spectral regrowths due to in-band intermodulation overlap with each other, which degrades DPD performance. To solve this problem, we propose a new DPD technique where the dual-band PA characteristics are estimated first, and then the DPD parameters are obtained from the estimated PA characteristics. By finding the DPD parameters through two steps, pre-distortion can perform well for the closely-spaced dual band signals. The proposed technique is verified through computer simulation. Simulation result shows that the proposed method performs better than the conventional method for closely-spaced dual band signals.

  • Power amplifier is an essential component for transmitting signals to a remote receiver in wireless communication systems. Power amplifier is a non-linear device in general, and the nonlinear distortion becomes severer as the output power increases. The nonlinearity results in spectral regrowth, which leads to adjacent channel interference, and decreases the transmit signal quality. To linearize power amplifiers, many techniques have been developed so far. Among the techniques, digital pre-distortion is known as the most cost and performance effective technique. However, the linearization performance falls down abruptly when the power amplifier operates in its saturation region. This is because of the severe nonlinearity. To relieve this problem, this paper proposes a new adaptive predistortion technique. The proposed technique controls the adaptive algorithm based on the power amplifier input level. Specifically, for small signals, the adaptive predistortion algorithm works normally. On the contrary, for large signals, the adaptive algorithm stops until small signals occur again. By doing this, wrong coefficient update by severe nonlinearity can be avoided. Computer simulation results show that the proposed method can improve the linearization performance compared with the conventional digital predistortion algorithms.

  • Digital Pre-Distortion (DPD) is a linearization technique for nonlinear power amplifiers (PAs) by implementing inverse function of the PA at baseband digital stage. To obtain proper DPD parameters, a feedback path is required to convert the PA output to a baseband signal, and a memory is also needed to store the feedback signals. DPD parameters are usually found by an adaptive algorithm from the feedback samples. However, for the adaptive algorithm to converge to a reliable solution, long feedback samples are required, which increases convergence time and hardware complexity. In this paper, we propose a DPD technique that requires relatively short feedback samples. From the observation that the convergence time of the adaptive algorithm highly depends on the initial condition, this paper iteratively utilizes the feedback samples while keeping and using the converged DPD parameters at the former iteration as the initial condition at the current iteration. Computer simulation results show that the proposed method performs better than the conventional technique while the former requires much shorter feedback samples than the latter.

  • An adaptive predistorter linearizer suitable for the DSP implementation is proposed. Predistortion is performed by the DSP instead of the analog predistorter. RLS algorithm is employed for the optimization process to minimize the errors between the predistorter and postdistorter output signals. Computer simulation results for our linearizer show good performance.

  • In this paper, a new predistorter controlling modified individual order jntermodulation distortion signals is proposed. The proposed predistorter generates and controls predistorted third and high order IM signals independently. Using predistorted signals, jntermodulation distortion signals of power amplifier are suppressed effectively. The predistortion linearizer has been implemented to operate in Korean PCS basestation transmitting band (1840~1870MHz). The test results show that IMD3 and IMD5 (C/I) of power amplifier are improved more than 40dB and 23dB for CW two tone signals, respectively. The predistorter improves the adjacent channel power ratio (ACPR) more than 10dB at 885KHz offset point for CDMA (IS-95) signals.

  • New digital predistortion technique is proposed for power amplifier linearization in multi-band transmission systems. We consider a system where muli-band signals are combined and amplified by a single power amplifier (PA). In this system, the PA output is distorted by the nonlinear cross-products between different band signals as well as their own nonlinear self-products. To compensate these nonlinear effects, we propose a multiple PD structure. Each PD removes the nonlinear cross-products and self-products to mitigate the spectral regrowth for the corresponding band. Since the PD parameters for different bands are linked together, it is difficult to find the PD parameters separately. Thus, we propose an iterative method for finding the PD parameters jointly. For demonstration of the proposed method, multi-band characteristics of PA are extracted from a commercial power amplifier. Computer simulation was executed based on the PA parameters. The simulation results show that the proposed method can effectively linearize the PA and remove spectral regrowth at each signal band.

  • This paper presents the new architecture of an adaptive predistortion linearizer using the polynomial type predistorter. In the proposed linearizer, most of the processes, including the predistortion, are performed with a digital signal processor(DSP). The recursive least squares(RLS) algorithm is employed for the optimization process to minimize the errors between the predistorter and postdistorter output signals. Simulation results demonstrate that the adjacent channel power ratio(ACPR) is improved by greater than 40 dB at the band edge with linearization. The convergence and reconvergence performance of the linearizer is also satisfactory.

  • In this paper, we represent considering parameters for design of a Cartesian vector modulator predistorter to maximize linearity improvement of the predistorter and propose an advanced Cartesian vector modulator predistrotrer with nonlinear starting point control circuit. In order to confirm the performance of the proposed predistorter, the predistorter is applied to power amplifier with 15 W output power for 2.5 GHz band mobile WiMax 1-FA signal. From the measured results, ACLR of -45.3 dBc with 4 dB improvement of ALCR compared with the previous predistorter is obtained and linearity improvement range is also extended.

  • In the thesis, we propose a new type of the predistortion linearizer using frequency multiplier The linearizer utilizing the 2nd and 3th harmonic used the individual control of the 3rd and 5th order intermodulation distortion(IMD) component. This structure is composed of wilkinson power combiner for combine and isolation of output signal, 3rd order IMD product controller using doubler and 5th order IMD product controller using tripler. The proposed predistortion linearizer controlled by individual order is obtained for about -16 dBc and 18 dBc of 3rd order and 5th order IMD components, respectively, over the frequency band 870 MHz to 880 MHz at the output power of 34 dBm/tone.

  • A new digital pre-distortion technique to linearize power amplifier (PA) is proposed for concurrent dual-band transmitters. In the conventional dual-band DPD techniques, two independent dual-feedback paths are required to compensate nonlinear cross-products between different bands as well as the nonlinear self-products of each band's own signal. However, it increases hardware complexity and expense. In this paper, we propose a new DPD method requiring only a single feedback path. In this new structure, the proposed technique first estimates the dual-band PA characteristics using the single feedback path. The DPD parameters are then extracted from the estimated PA characteristics. The DPD performance of the proposed method is validated through computer simulation. According to the results, the proposed technique can achieve comparable performance to the conventional two feedback DPD with significantly reduced hardware complexity.
