  • In this paper, turbulence models for considering roughness in the open source code(OpenFOAM) was investigated. Wall function in the RANS(Reynolds-averaged Navier - Stokes) turbulence model was modified considering roughness on the flat plate by using roughness function. Correlation between the first layer height in the CFD model and roughness height of the plate was observed, and the most proper roughness function, and the first layer height from the plate wall in the CFD analysis was suggested in this paper.

  • An implicit viscous turbulent flow solver is developed for two-dimensional geon unstructured triangular meshes. The flux terms are discretized based on a cell-centered formulation with the Roe's flux-difference splitting. The solution is advanced in time us backward-Euler time-stepping scheme. At each time step, the linear system of equation approximately solved wi th the Gauss-Seidel relaxation scheme. The effect of turbulence is with a standard k-ε two-equation model which is solved separately from the mean flow equation the same backward-Euler time integration scheme. The triangular meshes are generated advancing-front/layer technique. Validations are made for flows over the NACA 0012 airfoil. Douglas 3-element airfoil. Good agreements are obtained between the numerical result experiment.

  • A new wall impaction model for diesel spray is described in this paper. The gas phase is modelled in terms of the Eulerian continuum conservation equations of mass, momentum, energy and fuel vapour fraction. The liquid phase is modelled following the discrete droplet model approach. The droplet parcel contains many thousands of drops assumed to have the same size, temperature and velocity components. The droplet parcel equations of trajectory, momentum, mass and energy are written in Lagrangian form. The new drop-wall interaction model is proposed, which is based on experimental investigations on individual drops, and it is applied for the general non-orthogonal grid. The model is then assessed through comparison with experiments over a wide range of test conditions of sprays. The results are in good agreement with experimental data.

  • Flow distribution of a mid-size vehicle in engine room was investigated numerically to analyze the flow performance of given design cases in a front body of the mid-size vehicle. The data analyzed are the mass flow rate at the upper and lower openings, in the radiator, and the degree of non-uniformity of the velocity field at the inlet of the radiator. It is presented that the shape of the front end and the presence of the undercover greatly affect the flow fields, therefore, the flow performance.

  • The paper presents numerical simulations of laminar vortex-shedding flows past a circular cylinder for Re ≤ 500. The simulations are performed by solving the unsteady 2-D Navier-Stokes equations with a finite volume method using unstructured grid system. The resulting Reynolds number dependence of the Strouhal number and of the drag and lift coefficients is compared with experiments and with previous numerical results, showing good agreement. It is found that, for the truly laminar Reynolds number range the present calculation method described is capable of producing reasonably accurate results for the main practically relevant parameters such as Strouhal number, drag and lift coefficients.

  • In this study, effects of thurster axis tilting angle on the thruster-hull interaction and propulsion performance in a dynamic positioning system of offshore plant are numerically investigated. Straight and 7-degree tilted downward thruster models as a form of ducted propeller are considered. For numerical simulations, Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations with SST turbulence model are solved by using STAR-CCM+. Results show that thruster-hull interaction is reduced in 7-degree tilted thruster model with lower vortex strength between thruster and hull bottom, although the propulsion performance does not have noticeable difference in a bollard condition.

  • Recently, several open source codes for computational fluid dynamics (CFD) have been introduced and are spreading fast. Our group has chosen the OpenFOAM as a platform to develop our own in-house code. In this brief review, we would like to share the information on the codes and what we have experienced so far. We introduce several features of OpenFOAM, which include the performance compared with commercial packages, estimation for current user population, and our own prospect for future improvement in performance and growth in user population. In addition, we briefly introduce our experience gained in embedding the level set method into the OpenFOAM.

  • In this paper, a three-dimensional numerical study on flow pattern in winter along connecting passageway of a composite building was conducted using a commercial CFD package. The incompressible Navier-Stokes equation coupled was solved by using SIMPLE algorithm in order to find steady solutions. It was shown that a upward flow is generated inside the building in winter due to buoyancy effect and that the air inside connecting passageway flows from the shorter building to the taller one regardless of the slope of the passageway. Further, it was found that the magnitude of air velocity inside connecting passageway increases as the uphill slope to the taller building increases and decreases as the downhill slope to the taller one increases, although the variation in the magnitude of fluid velocity is not substantial. Lastly, it was shown that the maximum air velocity inside connecting passageway is less than the allowable limit for all the cases considered in this study.
