  • As international environmental regulations for pollutant and greenhouse gas emissions discharged from ships are being reinforced, it is drawing attention to use LNG as ship fuel. This paper compares the explosion risk potential in the LNG fuel gas supply systems of two types used in marine LNG fuelled vessels. By selecting 8500 TEU class container ships as target, LNG storage tank was designed and pressure conditions were assumed for the use of each fuel supply type. The leak hole sizes were divided into three categories, and the leak frequencies for each category were estimated. The sizes of the representative leak holes and release rates were estimated. The release rate and the leak frequency showed an inverse relationship. The pump type fuel gas supply system showed high leak frequency, and the pressure type fuel gas supply system showed high release rate. Computational fluid dynamics simulation was applied to perform a comparative analysis of the explosion risk potential of each fuel supply system.

  • In this paper, a Kriging metamodel-based multi-objective optimization strategy in conjunction with an NSGA-II(non-dominated sorted genetic algorithm-II) has been employed to optimize the valve-plate shape of the axial piston pump utilizing 3D CFD simulations. The optimization process for minimum pressure ripple and maximum pump efficiency is composed of two steps; (1) CFD simulation of the piston pump operation with various combination of six parameters selected based on the optimization principle, and (2) applying a multi-objective optimization approach based on the NSGA-II using the CFD data set to evaluate the Pareto front. Our exploration shows that we can choose an optimal trade-off solution combination to reach a target efficiency of the axial piston pump with minimum pressure ripple.

  • This study is focused on the comparison of a 3 dimensional numerical and hydraulic model experiment for the flow phenomenon when a lock gate is opened. The lock gate is designed to discharge the flood flow rate at $218m^3/s$ of Solicheon at the Kun Jang national industry complex. The three dimensional ${\kappa}-{\epsilon}$ turbulent model of ANSYS CFX-10 of the computational fluid dynamics(CFD) program was used. The characteristics of CFX-10 are able to be simulated effectively for turbulent flow, especially the flow separation of the boundary layer of the two phase interface of air and water. The velocity and the flow pattern of the numerical model was showed to be similar to the results of the hydraulic model experiment.

  • To evaluate the numerical method in simulation of diffusion flames and to see the effects of strain rate and fuel concentration on the flame radius and thickness, the nonpremixed methane-air counterflow flames in microgravity were simulated axisymmetrically by using the MST Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS). The $1000^{\circ}C$ based flame radius and thickness were investigated for the mole fraction of methane in the fuel stream, $X_m=20,\;50,\;and\;80\%$ and the global strain rates $a_g=20,\;60,\;and\;90s^{-1}$ for each mole fraction. The flame radius increased with the global strain rate while the flame thickness decreased linearly as the global strain rate increased. The flame radius decreased as the mole fraction increased, but it was not so sensitive to the mole fraction compared with the global strain rate. Since there was good agreement in the nondimensional flame thickness obtained with OPPDIF and FDS respectively, it was confirmed that FDS is capable of predicting well the counterflow flames in a wide range of strain rate and fuel concentration.

  • This study is related with fire risk assessment for fire and smoke spread of double skin facade system by use of FDS (Fire Dynamics Simulator) which is a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model of fire-driven fluid flow. For the study, fire scenario is intended to evaluate the impact of a fire spread for glazed office building. The major purpose of this study is to analyze the fire risk depending on the width of between inner skin and outer skin and to present fire prevention method regarding double skin facade system. The result of analysis presents fire spread more vertically as intermediate space becomes narrow. It is anticipated that fire can spread upper 2 stories above the fire floor if intermediate space with not more than 1m width. Therefore, prevention of vertical fire spread is required.

  • Because of the recent increase in maritime cargo capacity, the production and price of crude oil have been rising. As oil prices have risen, many problems have occurred in the industry. To solve these problems, marine resources are being actively developed, and there has been an increase in the orders for special vessels and marine structures for the development of marine resources. However, consequently, various kinds of accidents have also occurred in these special vessels and structures. One of the major types of accidents involves fire and explosion, which cause many casualties and property damage. Therefore, various studies to estimate and prevent such accidents have been carried out. In this study, as basic research for the prevention of fire and explosion, numerical simulations on combustion were carried out by using a commercial grid generation program, Gridgen, and a CFD program, ANSYS-CFX. The influences of some parameters, such as the grid system, turbulence model, turbulent dissipation rate, and so on, on the simulation results were investigated, and optimum ones were chosen. It was found that the present results adopting these parameters agreed moderately well with other experimental and numerical ones.

  • Steam reforming of methane in the high temperature solar chemical reactor bas advantage in its heating method. Using concentrated solar energy as a heating source of the reforming reaction can reduce the $CO_2$ emission by 20% compared to hydrocarbon fuel. In this paper, the simulation result of methane-steam reforming on a high temperature solar chemical reactor(SCR) using Fluent 6.3.26 is presented. The high temperature SCR is designed for the Inha Dish-1, a Dish type solar concentrator installed in Songdo city. Basic SCR performance factors are referred to the former researches of the same laboratory. Inside the SCR porous metal is used for a receiver/reactor. The porous metal is carved like a dome shape on the incident side to increase the heat transfer. Also, ring-disc set of baffle is inserted in the porous metal region to increase the path length. Numerical and physical models are also used from the former researches. Methane and steam is mixed with the same mole fraction and injected into the SCR. The simulation is performed for a various inlet mass flow rate of the methane-steam mixture gas. The result shows that the average reactor temperature and the conversion rate change appreciably by the inlet mass flow rate of 0.0005 kg/s.

  • Purpose: In this study, we performed ventilation simulations for a standard isolation ward including three intensive care rooms, one anteroom(buffer room), and its recommended ventilation equipments. The purpose of this study is to predict outflow of pathogenic bacteria from patient breath to verify the reliability and the safety of the isolation ward. Methods: We suppose three scenarios of the movement of medical staff. The leakage of patient's breath to out of the ward is predicted in these scenarios using CFD simulations. Results: The patient's breath leakage rate to out of the ward in scenario 1 according to room air changes per hour(ACH : 6 and 12) is predicted to be 0.000057% and 0.00002%, respectively. The patient's breath leakage rate to out of the ward in scenario 2 according to room air changes(ACH : 6 and 12) is predicted to be 0.00063% and 0.00019%, respectively. The patient's breath leakage rate to out of the ward in scenario 3, which is the worst case(6 room air changes) is predicted to be 0.1%. Implications: Through the ventilation simulation like that in this study, the reliability and the safety on isolation performance of various plan of isolation ward are predicted quantitatively.
