In this study, a trapezoidal hollow ball is used, instead of a spherical hollow ball commonly used in void slab, to secure the high hollow ratio in the deck type void slab. The bending and shear performance was measured with consideration for the shape change of the hollow ball. And to confirm the effect of deck plate and truss wire on shear performance, experiments were performed depending on the installation directions of the one-way deck plate. As a result, the bending performance of the deck type void slab with a trapezoidal hollow ball was similar to that of the void slab with a spherical hollow ball. However, according to the data of shear strength examined, the contribution of shear performance enhancement of the truss wire had a more effect on the shear performance of deck type void slab, rather than the influence by changing of the shape of hollow ball. In the previous studies, the shear strength is reduced to about 60%, due to the reduction of the effective section of concrete by installation of hollow ball. But in this experiment, the maximum load of specimen, in which the deck was installed in horizontal direction, so expected to have no influence on the shear performance, was only reduced to about 87%, due to the truss framework of truss wire.
Three interior slab-column connections designed by equal static moments and by different distribution of end and midspan moments were tested. Each test specimen consists of a 4.2 m square slab and a 355 mm square column stub. The slab thickness is 152 mm. Test results showed not only that flat plate systems can undergo considerable redistribution of moments from the uncracked state to final maximum capacity, but also that the distribution of moments is controlled largely by the distribution of reinforcement adopted by the designer. Tests also indicated that the punching shear strength of slabs can be affected by the redistributed moments.
Failure modes result in fracture or tearing, which may cause deterioration of resistance and reduction of inelastic deformation capacity. The potential failure modes for Special Concentrically Braced Frames (SCBFs) include fracture or tearing of the brace, net section fracture of the brace or gusset plate, fracture of the gusset plate welds, shear fracture of the bolts, block shear, excessive bolt bearing deformation, and buckling of the gusset plate. HSS tubular braces are commonly used in SCBFs, and net section fracture of the tubular brace may also occur through the brace net section at the end of the slot cut into the tube to slip over the gusset plate. This failure mode is categorized as a tension failure mode, and may cause dramatic loss of resistance and brittle behavior. Net section reinforcement is required according to AISC design specifications (AISC 2001). In this paper, the need to reinforce the net section area was discussed. Initially, the results of the net section fracture tests done by the University of California in Berkeley were presented with the modeling of these tests using FE models. To investigate the possibility of net section fracture in an actual frame, the slot end hole model was adapted to the frame FE model, and alternate near-fault histories were applied with tension-dominated cycles, since previous analyses showed that loading history was the most critical factor in net section fracture. The need for this reinforcement (cover plate) and the tension-dominated near-fault history were investigated.

This study evaluates the seismic performance of post-tensioned flat plate structures with or without slab bottom reinforcement. For this purpose, 3 and 9 story frames were designed only considering gravity loads. This study conducts a nonlinear static pushover analysis. This study was an analytical model that is able to represent punching shear failure and fracture mechanism. The analytical results showed that the seismic performance of a post-tension flat plate is strongly influenced by the existence of slab bottom reinforcement through column. By placing slab bottom reinforcement in a PT flat plate frame, lateral strength and max drift capacity are significantly increased.

Cold-formed deck sections are used in many composite floor slab applications wherein the steel deck serves not only as the form for the concrete during construction but also as the principal tensile reinforcement for the bottom fiber of the composite slab. This paper provides the results of an experimental study performed for the composite slabs with the new shaped deck plates with the locking ribs, the dove tails, and the powerful embossment, which are the mechanical means to improve positive interlocking effect between the deck and the concrete. A total of 28 specimens are tested to investigate the composite effects between the concrete and metal deck plate. Important parameters in this are the span length, the thickness of the deck plate, support condition, and whether shear studs are placed at each support or not. The test results are summarized for the maximum load and failure behavior for the specimens.

The purpose of this study is to examine the shear strength and structural performance of DH-Beams. The DH-Beam construction method uses thin steel plates as form-works and structural elements. Steel plates and rebars for DH-Beams were prefabricated at factory and then erected before casting concrete at construction sites. In this study, the contribution of steel plates to the shear strength of DH-Beam was evaluated since the plates were expected to work as reinforcements. Five test specimens were made for experimental and analytical studies. They consisted of two DH-Beams for the positive loading test and two DH-Beams for the negative loading test and a RC beam for the comparison purpose. Test results on DH-Beams were compared with design equations and the RC beam test result. It was proven that DH-Beams demonstrated the good shear behavior showing sufficient strengths and deformation capacities. Nonlinear analyses with test specimens were also used to evaluate the contribution of DH plates to strengths. Analytical models included various cases such as beams with lateral plates only or beams without any plates. These analyses also showed that steel plates can contribute to the enhancement of shear strength of DH-Beams. Based on experimental and analytical studies, it was concluded that steel plates of DH-Beams can be used as good shear reinforcements.

This paper describes the results of an experimental study on the new type of encased composite beams that use deep deck plates, which could reduce the story height of buildings by controlling the bottom flange of steel beams. The profiled steel beam was thus developed. It was advantageous to the long span of the buildings. Seven full-scale specimens were constructed, and simply supported bending tests were conducted on the encased composite beams with different steel plate thicknesses, with and without shear studs, reinforcing bars, and web openings. The test results showed that the encased composite beams that were developed in this study had sufficient composite action without additional shear connectors due to their inherent shear-bond effects between the steel beams and concrete.
Corrugated webs have been used for composite prestressed concrete box girder bridges. Innovative steel plate girders using corrugated webs have been proposed. It has been found that analytical and experimental researches conducted to determine the strength of trapezoidally corrugated webs can fail with respect to three different buckling modes: local, global, and interactive shear buckling. Shear buckling capacity equations based on classical and orthotropic plate buckling theories have been proposed, but these equations show some differences. In this paper, geometric parameters that influence interactive shear buckling behavior with interaction effects are identified via extensive bifurcation buckling analysis using the finite element meth.

In this study, the equations of torsional and warping constants of a I-shaped plate girder with sine corrugated web are suggested. Because of geometric characteristics of the section, a I-shaped plate girder with corrugated web shows high out-of-plane stiffness, shear strength, and torsional stiffness. Torsional constant and warping constant definitely affect lateral-torsional buckling loads. Therefore, exact estimation of the sectional properties is quite important. But, it is difficult to estimate these properties by former methods. So, this study was focused on suggestion of the rational equations to calculate torsional and warping constants. In order to investigate the effects of geometric characteristics of sine-corrugated webs on torsional stiffness and warping torsional constant, finite element analyses for pure torsional behavior and warping torsional behavior of I-shaped plate girders were performed. By regression analyses of the analytical results, rational equations of the torsional constant and warping constant were suggested. Suggested equations for the properties were validated based on the analytical results of lateral-torsional buckling of simply supported I-shaped plate girder. By suggested equations, torsional and warping constants of I-shaped plate girders with a sine-corrugated web can be rationally estimated and more exact lateral-torsional buckling load can be simply calculated.
