  • This paper presents research result to study the change of structural capacity of reinforced concrete beams with various shear reinforcement ratios after damage by fire load. In addition, fundamental data are given in order to predict the strength variation of RC member due to fire damage by evaluating the previous calculation method codified in codes. Nine RC beam specimens were made and exposed to the fire controled by the standard fire curve. And the structural capacity was evaluated through a failure test under simple support condition. Previous code formula, ACI code and Eurocode were reviewed and used for the calculation of the strength of specimens damaged by fire. From the test, RC beam specimens exhibited very brittle failure when it exposed to fire controled by standard fire curve during more than one hour. And this failure pattern tended to be more serious when shear reinforcement ratio decreased or fire loading duration increased. From the evaluation of the calculation process in code, the change of strength due to fire can be properly predicted if the damage of materials is well defined.

  • Three high strength reinforced concrete structural walls were tested under the combined action of a constant axial and a horizontal cycle load. The aim of the tests has been to investigate the effects of the web horizontal reinforcement on hysteretic behavior of wall. The results have helped to identify the causes of wall failure and have demonstrated the web horizontal reinforcement does not appear have a significant effect on shear capacity, stiffness and energy dissipation but have a significant effect on the failure mode of the walls.

  • In this study, an equation for modelling the shear strength of reinforced concrete member with web reinforcement is proposed. Although the general formulas for shear strength of reinforced concrete member with small a /d are obtained based on the experimental results, the proposed equation herein is derived from lower bound theorem of limit analysis. The proposed model takes into account arch mechanism and truss mechanism. And ir provides the values of divided shear strength ratio of each mechanism as well as visual understanding of the mechanism on how the given load is transfered to the support. Also, the model takes into account the effect of a /d. longitudinal reinforcement ratio, and web reiriforcement ratio quantitively. Based on the comparisons of the result of this model with previous, test results, it shows good agreements.

  • This paper presents the tensile behavior of stud connections installed between reinforced concrete and steel members. Eight specimens are tested to verify the factors influencing the tensile behavior of the connection. Major variables considered in the test are the reinforcement ratios of concrete member and connection details. Test results indicate that the reinforcing bars near stud bolts contribute to the increase of the tensile strength of the member as well as to the reduction of brittle failure. It is shown that C-type or U-type connection has relatively high ductility. From the evaluation on the tensile strength of test results including those of peformed by previous researchers, it was shown CCD (Concrete Capacity Design) method overestimated the strength. In this paper, the reduction factor of 0.75 ø instead of ø is suggested for design purpose of the stud connection.

  • An experimental study was performed to investigate the earthquake resistance of the beam-column connections as a part of a precast concrete moment-resisting frame that uses precast concrete U-shaped shells for the beams. Five full-scale precast concrete specimens and one conventional monolithic concrete specimen were tested under cyclic loading. The parameters for this test were the reinforcement ratio, stirrup spacing, and end-strengthening details of the precast beam shell. The test results showed that regardless of the test parameters, the precast concrete beam-column connections showed good load-carrying capacity and deformation capacity, which were comparable to those of conventional monolithic concrete specimen. However, at large deformations, the beam-column connections of the precast concrete specimens were subjected to severe strength degradation due to diagonal shear cracks and the bond-slip of re-bars at the joint region. For this reason, the energy dissipation capacity and stiffness of the precast concrete specimens were significantly less than those of the cast-in-place specimen.

  • In this paper, the structural properties of the existing reinforced concrete(RC) piers are surveyed and the major factors influencing the member strength and deformation capacity are identified. Also a seismic evaluation procedure of RC piers is presented. The factors controlling the member strength are the applied axial load, the reinforcement ratio and yield strength of longitudinal rebar for flexural strength, and the transverse reinforcement for shear strength. Member deformation capacity largely depends on transverse reinforcement ratio and anchor detail, and splice location of longitudinal reinforcement. The above structural detail should be investigated for the detail seismic evaluation of RC piers. The most of existing RC piers have inadequate transverse reinforcement anchor details and the splices of longitudinal reinforcement in the pier bottom where plastic hinges are formed after yielding. Therefore the deformation capacity is not enough for the ductile flexural behavior of the RC piers. The presented evaluation procedure can be used for the rational decisions as to seismic retrofitting of the existing RC piers.
