  • This paper presents the flow characteristics in the fluid circulation loop using the tubular type linear induction motor(TLIM) electromagnetic pump. A TLIM of thrust 40[N] is analyzed using the equivalent and genetic algorithm for the system The flow characteristics are analyzed by coupling the Maxwell equations with the Navier-Stokes equation with the thrust. The analysis algorithm is developed for analyzing the liquid metal flow in the system for laminar and turbulent flow. And the effect of thrust is analyzed for the flow characteristics.

  • This paper consider the control for the vehicle suspension system using electro-rheological damper. The study is performed by using of FLC(Fuzzy Logic Controller). The model used in the simulation is quarter car and the road disturbance is regarded as white noise random process with zero mean. Proposed control technique shows good agreement compared with the result from the conventional on-off/bang-bang type control technique.

  • Digital microfluidic electroporation system was used for the transformation of microalgae and we have obtained higher transformation efficiency and viability than that of conventional method. Key parameters of electroporation such as pulse voltage, number, and duration time were systematically investigated for two different microalgal strains with and without cell wall. We have found that cell wall does not always have negative effects on the gene transformation of microalgae. Parallel processing of proposed digital microfluidic electroporation was demonstrated together with on chip culture of microalgae.

  • Electrorheological(ER) fluid's storage shear modulus(G') and loss factor(${\eta}$) have been directly measured using small amplitude forced oscillating rheometer as a function of oscillating frequency, strain amplitude and applied electric field. Two types of experiment were performed , (a) frequency sweep and (b) amplitude sweep. Two kinds of sample were employed for this experiment ; cornstarch particles in corn oil and zeolite particles in silicone oil. The storage shear modulus was a strong function of driving frequency. Generally, the modulus increased with driving frequency. On the other hand, the loss factor was not well behaved as storage modulus, but as the driving frequency increases the loss factor slightly decreases was the trend of the material's characteristics. Also the modulus was a strong function of strain amplitude. Generally, modulus decreased with increasing strain, but loss factor increases slightly with increasing strain amplitude. For G', cornstarch in corn oil ER fluid has higher values than zeolite based fluid as we increased applied electric field. On the other hand, zeolite based fluid has higher values for ${\eta}$. There is a reasonable agreement between theoretical calculation and experiment.

  • The present study numerically investigated two-dimensional dielectrophoretic motions of a pair of particles suspended freely in a viscous fluid, interacting with a nearby nonconducting planar wall, under an external uniform electric field. The results show that the motions depend strongly on the set of two electric conductivity signs and the particles-wall separation gap. When both particles have the same sign, they revolve and finally align parallel to the electric field. In contrast, with different signs, they revolve in the opposite direction and finally align perpendicular to the field. Simultaneously, they are repelled to move farther away from the wall regardless of their conductivity set. With further separation from the wall, the particles-wall interaction effect diminishes and tthe particle-particle effect dominates.

  • Under non-uniform electric field, a directional force along the electric field gradient is applied to matter having permanent or induced dipoles. The transport of particles by the directional force is called dielectrophoresis (DEP). Since the strength and direction of the DEP force depend on parameters, such as permittivity and conductivity of particles and surrounding media, and frequency of the applied AC electric field, particle can be precisely manipulated by controlling the parameters. Moreover, unlike electrophoresis, DEP can be applied to any particles where dipole is effectively induced by electric field. Such a DEP technique has been used in various fields, ranging from microfluidic engineering to biosensor and microchip research. This paper first describes the fundamentals of DEP, and discusses representative microelectrode designs used for DEP study. Then, exemplary applications of DEP, such as separation, capture and self-assembly of particles, are introduced.

  • The flexural vibration of laminated composite beams with an electro-rheological(ER) fluid has been investigated to design a structure with maximum possible damping capacity. The equations of motion are derived for flexural vibrations of symmetrical, mu1ti-layer laminated beams. The damping radio and modal damping of the first bending mode are calculated by means of iterative complex eigensolution method. Finite element method is used for the analysis of dynamic characteristics of the laminated composite beams with an ER fluid. For the validation of modeling methodology using viscoelastic theory the predicted dynamic properties are compared to the measured ones by author's previous work. They are in good agreement. This paper addresses a design strategy of laminated composite under flexural vibrations with an ER fluid.

  • Electric field effect on boiling of refrigerants R11, R113, and FC72 has been investigated experimentally. One purpose of the experimental investigation is to determine the effects of the electrode arrangements on electrohydrodynamic boiling of the above mentioned liquids. The test equipment employed in the experiment consists of a shell and tube heat exchanger with six or six and twelve rows of electrode wires around the tube. It has been found that the applied voltage promotes the boiling heat transfer coefficient except FC72. Boiling heat transfer enhancement obtained is about 230% for R11, 280% for R113. It has also been observed that bubbles detached from the tube aggregate at the place where the electrical gradient force balances with the buoyancy one. These aggregated bubbles force to decrease the boiling heat transfer coefficient as well as to reduce the voltage needed to the dielectric breakdown.

  • Electro-active polymer, one of smart materials, is a new alternative technology, which can get an ultra precision movements and bio-compatibilty. This paper presents the relationship between elastic modulus and maximum deflection as a key property of maxwell stress effects and also presents the relationship between dielectric constant and maximum deflection as a key property of electro-striction effects in disc-type actuators using segmented PU. To induce equation about distributed load of a disc, we use boundary condition of fully clamped circular plate and to obtain design parameters of a micro-fluidics system, CFD simulation is performed.
