This experiment was conducted to investigate seedling emergence and early growth of Monochoria vaginalis and Scirpus juncoides in the controlled-environment chamber maintained at different temperatures. Non-linear regression analyses of observed data against effective accumulated temperature (EAT) with the Gompertz and logistic models showed that the Gompertz and logistic models worked well in describing seedling emergence and early growth of both weed species, respectively, regardless of temperature. EATs required for 50% of the maximum seedling emergence and the maximum leaf number of M. vaginalis were estimated to be 69.3 and $131^{\circ}C$, respectively, while those of S. juncoides were 94.8 and $137^{\circ}C$, respectively. Models developed in this study thus were used to predict seedling emergence and early growth under elevated temperature condition. If rotary tillage with water is made on 27 May under $+3^{\circ}C$ elevated temperature condition, dates for 50% of the maximum seedling emergence and 4 leaf stage were predicted to be 1 June and 15 June for M. vaginalis and 3 June and 14 June for S. juncoides, respectively. As compared with current temperature, these dates are 1-2 days earlier for the seedling emergence and 3 days earlier for the early growth, suggesting that earlier application of herbicides is required for effective control of M. vaginalis and S. juncoides under elevated temperature condition in the future.

Concrete exposed to severely low temperature below $-20^{\circ}C$ should be provided with proper heat supplying curing to protect the concrete from early frost damage at the time of pouring.meanwhile, so far, effective heat curingmethods of the concrete under severely low temperature are not well established in Korea. For this reason, the objective of this paper is to provide effective heat curingmethod of concrete exposed to severely low temperature to protect early frost damage by varying the combination of heat curingmaterial combinations. Temperature history, maturity development and core strength results are investigated. Fourmock-up specimens simulating slab, wall and column were prepared and heat insulation, heat supplying and both were applied. Test results indicate that the combination of quadruple layer bubble sheet(4BS) and embedding of heating cable has desirable performance for a slab, and heat supplying curing inside heat enclosure and heat generationmat also shows desirable performance for a wall, and for a column, use of EPS heat insulation has proper performance against early frost damage, which reaches $45^{\circ}D{\cdot}D$ and helps the concretemaintain above $0^{\circ}C$ within 3 days. Themethodsmentioned above are believed to be optimum protection from early frost damage of the concrete under $-20^{\circ}C$.
To evaluate growing degree days(GDD) as an index of growth duration of rice plants, 30 days old seedlings of 16 japonica and 14 indica/japonica varieties were transplanted six times from May 10 at the 10-day intervals at Gyeongsan in 1982. The number of days from transplanting to heading decreased as transplanting dates delayed in all japonica varietie and 4 indica/japonica varieties but that of 10 indica/japonica varieties decreased up to June 9 or June 19 transplantings and then it levelled off or increased with further delay of transplanting. However, GDD requirement was similar among transplanting dates at appropriate base temperatures; GDD could be better than calendar day system to classify maturity of varieties especially grown in a wide range of climatic conditions. Required GDD from transplanting to heading of all indica/japonica and early japonica varieties showened a smaller coefficient of variation (CV) compared to longer season japonica varieties. Among GDD methods, an accumulation of daily Max + Min temp./2 -$l0^{\circ}C$ showed the smallest CV for the duration from transplanting to heading, but for ripening period GDD calculated with adjusted maximum temperature when it was higher than $30^{\circ}C$ showed the best results. Heading date did not affect required GDD for maturity of japonica varieties, but in indica/japonica varieties GDD decreased as heading date delayed; at late transplantings ripening period of indica/japonica varieties was less extended compared to japonica varietes due to a decrease in grain weight.

In this study, Chemical Oxygen Demand(COD) which is the measure of organic substances, Total nitrogen(T-N), Total phosphorous(T-P), Fe and Mn were analyzed in the sediments of dam reservoir. The purpose of this study were to understand the relevances among the analytical methods adopted and the applicabilities of those methods. For the determination of COD, Standard Method for the Examination of Marine Environment(SMEME) and Standard Method for the Examination of Sanitary(SMES) was used. Both method had wide dynamic range and the deviations of the values obtained by two methods were small because $KMnO_4$ method closely reflected BOD and organic substances. For the determination of T-N and T-P, Standard Method for the Examination of Food(SMEF) and Standard Method for the Examination of Sanitary(SMES) were used. Two methods for T-N were both the acid-base titration but SMES gave less T-N values than SMEF because of the differences in digestion and distillation steps. Two methods for T-P gave the comparable values after acid digestion of $HNO_3$ and $HClO_4$. The determination of heavy metals as a Fe, Mn was mainly divided to the leaching method and acid digestion method. The values obtained by leaching method were less than those by digestion method. It is thought that the condition of acid digestion was more severe than that of leaching method.

This study was carried out to compare on the time of occurrence of 6 major rice insect pests [Lissorhoptrus oryzophilus Kusche, Oulema oryzae Kuwayama, Sogatella furcifera (Horvath), Nilaparvata lugens Stal., Cnaphalocrocis medinalis (Guenee), Mythimna separata Walker] in northern part of the Korean peninsula. Using growing degree days of the insects, we evaluated the number of occurrence generations and the time of occurrence. Over-wintering insects such as L. oryzophilus and O. oryzae showed different occurrence periods in northern regions. The occurrence period of the first generation adults was later in northeast regions than in Korean middle regions and more later both in northern alpines and in northern parts of east sea. In addition, the first adults of S. furcifera, N. lugens, C. medinalis, and M. separata occurred between June and early August. However, from late August to September, these insects showed the different occurrence periods in northern regions. Especially, the second adults of N. lugens were not occurred and the second to third generation adults of S. furcifera, C. medinalis, and M. separata showed similar occurrence properties. Based on these properties, the occurrence of major rice insect pests will be less in northeast regions, northern regions of east sea, northern inlands, and northern alpines of the Korean peninsula. However, comparing with their occurrences in northern regions of Gyenonggi and Gangwon provinces, the rice insect pests may show similar occurrence pattern in mid-korean mountains except for pyunggang and yangduk regions as well as in the southern and northern regions of Suyang-san.
For the practical application and development of biopolymer flocculant Biopol32 produced by Pseudomonas sp. GP32, its flocculation effect on wastewater from food processing, slaughter houses, and the dyeing industry was investigated. In the food processing wastewater, Biopol32 led to a chemical oxygen demand (COD) reduction rate of 70% and a suspended solid (SS) removal rate of 49% at pH 6.0. In the slaughter house wastewater at pH 4.0, a COD reduction rate of 61% and SS removal rate of 91% were observed, and in the dyeing wastewater, the rates were 72% and 92%, respectively, at pH 5.0. The size of floc formed during the flocculation process was 10 mm at a final concentration of 20 ppm, and the dehydration efficiency was 62%. In both the bioflocculant Biopol32 group and a PAA synthetic flocculant group, optimal flocculant concentration that yielded the best overall dehydration efficiency was 20 ppm, and, at this concentration, the shortest filtration time to reach the natural critical moisture content of 78.1% was attained.

Degree days have been determined using temperature data measured at nearby weather stations to a site of interest to produce information for supporting decision-making on agricultural production. Alternatively, the data products of Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) can be used for estimation of degree days in a given region, e.g., Korean Peninsula. The objective of this study was to develop a simple tool for processing the MODIS product for estimating cooling degree days (CDD), which would help assessment of heat stress conditions for a crop as well as energy requirement for greenhouses. A set of scripts written in R was implemented to obtain temperature profile data for the region of interest. These scripts had functionalities for processing spatial data, which include reprojection, mosaicking, and cropping. A module to extract air temperature at the surface pressure level was also developed using R extension packages such as rgdal and RcppArmadillo. Random forest (RF) models, which estimate mean temperature and CDD with a different set of MODIS data, were trained at 34 sites in South Korea during 2009 - 2018. Then, the values of CDD were calculated over Korean peninsula during the same period using those RF models. It was found that the CDD estimates using the MODIS data explained >74% of the variation in the CDD measurements at the weather stations in North Korea as well as South Korea. These results indicate that temperature data derived from the MODIS atmospheric products would be useful for reliable estimation of CDD. Our results also suggest that the MODIS data can be used for preparation of weather input data for other temperature-based agro-ecological models such as growing degree days or chill units.

The objective of this study was to access the effect of climate and soil factors on alfalfa dry matter yield (DMY) by the contribution through constructing the yield prediction model in a general linear model considering climate and soil physical variables. The processes of constructing the yield prediction model for alfalfa was performed in sequence of data collection of alfalfa yield, meteorological and soil, preparation, statistical analysis, and model construction. The alfalfa yield prediction model used a multiple regression analysis to select the climate variables which are quantitative data and a general linear model considering the selected climate variables and soil physical variables which are qualitative data. As a result, the growth degree days(GDD) and growing days(GD), and the clay content(CC) were selected as the climate and soil physical variables that affect alfalfa DMY, respectively. The contributions of climate and soil factors affecting alfalfa DMY were 32% (GDD, 21%, GD 11%) and 63%, respectively. Therefore, this study indicates that the soil factor more contributes to alfalfa DMY than climate factor. However, for examming the correct contribution, the factors such as other climate and soil factors, and the cultivation technology factors which were not treated in this study should be considered as a factor in the model for future study.

This study aims to identify the impact of optical energy on cultural properties when the light energy irradiates cultural assets during augmented reality (AR) or media façade performances as activities designed to garner public interest. The 10-story Gyeongcheonsa Pagoda was used for this study, and the impact was evaluated by comparing the optical energy irradiated during a media façade performance with the energy irradiated under normal conditions. For comparison, this study measured the illuminance in lux for each light source that irradiated the ten-story stone pagoda and used the data to calculate illuminance in lux-hours. The results showed that the pagoda receives 786.4 lux per hour when both sunlight and artificial light are present, while 13.2 lux of energy is irradicated by the media façade for each performance. The result indicates that the pagoda receives about 29.8 times more optical energy from sunlight and artificial light sources than during media façade performances on an hourly basis, when the performance is carried out twice a week. This study therefore concludes that the optical energy of media façade performances inflicted trivial damage to the ten-story stone pagoda.
