  • In this paper, we propose an efficient technique for the animation of flexible thin objects. Mass-spring model was employed to represent the flexible objects. Till now, many techniques have used the mass-spring model to generate plausible animation of soft objects. A straight-forward approach to the animation with mass-spring model is explicit Euler method, but the explicit Euler method has serious disadvantage that it suffers from 'instability problem'. The implicit integration method is a possible solution to overcome the instability problem. However, the most critical flaw of the implicit method is that it involves a large linear system. This paper presents a fast animation technique for mass-spring model with approximated implicit method. The proposed technique stably updates the state of n mass-points in O(n) time when the number of total springs are O(n). We also consider the interaction of the flexible object and air in order to generate plausible results.

  • Transport package for radioactive material should be structurally safe under puncture drop condition and its safety should be verified by test and numerical analysis. Most finite element analyses for puncture drop have been performed without modeling the impact limiter since failure is occurred in the materials of the impact limiter. This paper presents a new modeling methodology, where an element is eroded in case that the material's failure criteria are reached at the element's integration point, to investigate the effect of the impact limiter in the puncture process. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is shown through the puncture drop analysis of hotcell transport cask, which is under design in KAERI. The results show that about 80 percent of the total impact energy is absorbed due to the deformation of impact limiter. Using the present method the puncture drop can be analyzed more accurately, but it would give conservative results compared to the actual test condition.

  • Readout signal of high density DVD-RAM disk output was simulated to analyze the effect of crosserase and crosstalk to the readout signal which is one of the main difficulties to realize high density DVD-RAM system having single side recording density of 4.7 G13 and 15 G13 media. Laser beam intensity impinged on the disk was approximated as Gaussian and recorded marks were assumed elliptical and the readout signal was calculated as a two dimensional convolution of laser beam pattern and recored mark pattern. From the readout signal obtained by varying crosserase ratio, carrier levels with period of 3T to 11 T were calculated and compared. Jitter due to crosserase and crosstalk was calculated and compared using 1,000 random marks having 3T to 11T period. The results showed that the jitter due to crosserase turned out to be smaller than the jitter due to crosstalk.

  • The computations of the turbulent flow around the ship models with the free-surface effects were carried out. Incompressible Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations were solved by using an explicit finite-difference method with the nonstaggered grid system. The method employed second-order finite differences for the spatial discretization and a four-stage Runge-Kutta scheme for the temporal integration. For the turbulence closure, a modified Baldwin-Lomax model was exploited. The location of the free surface was determined by solving the equation of the kinematic free-surface condition using the Lax-Wendroff scheme and a free-surface conforming grid was generated at each time step so that one of the grid boundary surfaces always coincides with the free surface. An inviscid approximation of the dynamic free-surface boundary condition was applied as the boundary conditions for the velocity and pressure on the free surface. To validate the computational method developed in the present study, the computations were carried out for beth Wigley and Series 60 $C_B=0.6$ ship model and the computational results showed good agreements with the experimental data.

  • A hierarchical formulation based on p-version of the finite element method for linear elastic axisymmetric stress analysis is presented. This is accomplished by introducing additional nodal variables in the element displacement approximation on the basis of integrals of Legendre polynomials. Since the displacement approximation is hierarchical, the resulting element stiffness matrix and equivalent nodal load vectors are hierarchical also. The merits of the propoosed element are as follow: i) improved conditioning, ii) ease of joining finite elements of different polynomial order, and iii) utilizing previous solutions and computation when attempting a refinement. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the accuracy, efficiency, modeling convenience, robustness and overall superiority of the present formulation. The results obtained from the present formulation are also compared with those available in the literature as well as with the analytical solutions.

  • It was reviewed for the 2D numerical simulations to evaluate the effects of flood control by detention basin, even if stage-discharge relationships for the side weir were not known. A 2D depth-integrated numerical model was constructed by the application of the finite volume method to the shallow water equations as a numerical method and the introduction of an approximate Riemann solver for the accurate calculation of fluxes. Results by the model were compared with those by the laboratory test for the cases of free overflow and submerged flow over a side weir between the channel and storage. The difference between simulated and measured discharge coefficients for the case of free overflow is very small. In addition, the results by simulations were in good agreement with those by experiments for the submerged flow over a side weir and its mechanism was reproduced well. Through this study the discharge coefficients of side weirs can be accurately determined by the 2D numerical model and a considerable degree of accuracy can be achieved to evaluate the effect of flood defenses by detention basins. Thus, it will be expected to apply this model practically to the plan of detention basins, the evaluation of design alternatives, or the management of the existing ones.

  • The piecewise constant angular approximation is developed to replace the conventional angular quadrature sets in the solution of the second-order, multi-dimensional $S_{N}$ neutron transport equations. The newly generated quadrature sets by this method substantially mitigate ray effects and can be used in the same manner as the conventional quadrature sets are used. The discrete-ordinates and the piecewise-constant approximations are applied to both the first-order Boltzmann and the second-order form of neutron transport equations in treating angular variables. The result is that the mitigation of ray effects is only achieved by the piecewise-constant method, in which new angular quadratures are generated by integrating angle variables over the specified region. In other sense, the newly generated angular quadratures turn out to decrease the contribution of mixed-derivative terms in the even-parity equation that is one of the second-order neutron transport equation. This result can be interpreted as the entire elimination or substantial mitigation of ray effect are possible in the simplified even-parity equation which has no mixed-derivative terms.

  • This paper applied one of the well-known optimal control theory, namely, linear quadratic regulator(LQR), to the station-keeping maneuvers(SKM) for a geostationary satellite. The boundary conditions to transfer the system with a good accuracy at a terminal time were based upon the predicted orbital data which are created due to the Earth's non-uniform mass distribution's effect during 14 days and due to luni-solar effect during 28 days. Through the linearization of the nonlinear system equation with respect to reference orbit and the numerical integration of Riccati equation, the optimal trajectories and the corresponding control law have been obtained by using LQR. From the comparison of ${\Delta}V$ obtained by LQR with the ${\Delta}V$ obtained anatically by geometric method, Station Keeping Maneuvers(SKM) via LQR may provide comparable results to a real system. Furthermore it will demonstrate the possibility in fuel optimization and life extension of geostationary satellite.

  • This paper presents a dynamic crack propagation algorithm based on the Moving Least Squares(MLS) difference method. The derivative approximation for the MLS difference method is derived by Taylor expansion and moving least squares procedure. The method can analyze dynamic crack problems using only node model, which is completely free from the constraint of grid or mesh structure. The dynamic equilibrium equation is integrated by the Newmark method. When a crack propagates, the MLS difference method does not need the reconstruction of mode model at every time step, instead, partial revision of nodal arrangement near the new crack tip is carried out. A crack is modeled by the visibility criterion and dynamic energy release rate is evaluated to decide the onset of crack growth together with the corresponding growth angle. Mode I and mixed mode crack propagation problems are numerically simulated and the accuracy and stability of the proposed algorithm are successfully verified through the comparison with the analytical solutions and the Element-Free Galerkin method results.

  • The broadband input impedance, the input power and the radiation pattern of the monopole antenna attached to the handy phone operated at 800MHz are calculated by using the Finite Difference Time Domain(FDTD) Method. For the FDTD analysis of frequency characteristics of monopole antenna, the handy phone is modeled with the geometry that the monopole antenna is connected to a conducting box, and the modified FDTD algorithm[11] used the thin wire appproximation method and the Maxwell's integral equation from the original Yee algorithm is applied for the analysis of the wire structure. Also, by means of finding the current distribution directly from circumferencial magnetic filelds around the monopole antenna and the conducting box, the radiation pattern is calculated to observe the influence of the conducting box, and is compared with the results of the known mothod for the FDTD calculation of radiation pattern, For the experiments, the handy phone of which full length including antenna is .lambda. $\lambda$/2 is manufactured and we confirm that all computation results are agree well with the mea- sured values.
