  • The purpose of this study is to help a recovery of fatigue through the effect of cold immersion treatment after rowing ergometer on blood fatigue substance, MDA and SOD in rowing athletes. For this, 10 subjects participated in this study and we divided them into cold water immersion group (CWI, n=10), non-cold immersion group (NCI, n=10). The exercise program was performed to 2000 m rowing ergometer for maintaining high intensity. The data was collected with regard to the interaction effect of the group and time among the CWI and NCI, ANOVA was used. As the post-hoc test, Bonferroni test was used. The significance was set at .05 and the following conclusions were deduced. For lactic acid, there were the main effect of time (p<.001) and significant difference in the both group (p<.001). Also, LDH were significant difference in the each group (p<.05). For MDA, there were the interaction between group and time (p<.05) and the main effect of group (p<.05) and time (p<.001). SOD were indicated main effect of group and time (p<.05), there was significant difference between each group in the after 30 min recovery (p<.05). Collectively, The results of this study suggest that positive effect on blood fatigue substances, reactive oxygen species and anti-oxidation enzyme through cold water immersion intervention. Therefore, we strongly recommend that performing the cold immersion intervention would be beneficial after high intervention exercise.

  • The present study was conducted to characterize physiological responses of aerial part according to soil water stresses in 'Mihong' peach trees. Discolorations, wilting and falling of leaves were observed in chronological order as response for waterlogging and no irrigation and the phenomena started from basal to end of shoots. Shoot growth in elongation and thickness decreased and fallen leaves were severe in waterlogged trees. Function of water uptake by roots and photosynthesis and leaf respiration decreased by waterlogging. Leaf chlorophyll contents decreased in both treatments. In waterlogging treatment, decrease of chlorophyll was observed in normal leaves with waterlogging using light microscopy. Starch content was lower in both treatment and carbohydrate content was lower in root with waterlogging. These results demonstrated that waterlogging weakened the function of soil water uptake and movement and decreased photosynthesis and fallen leaves. Finally the peach trees would wither or suffer low temperature damage through the shortage of reserve accumulations. We suggested that waterlogging damage in peach trees could be reduced to take notice of irrigation and install drainage facility to improve soil condition.

  • The critical low temperature of death under submerged soil was -5^\circ C for the underground tuber of Cyperus serotinus while the vegetative organ (tuber or bulb) of Sagittaria pygmaea and Potamogeton distinctus -6^\circ C, -7^\circ C respectively. On the critical high temperature of death in water bath with 45^\circ C. Potamogeton distinctus and Sagittaria pygmaea were 1 hour, 24 hours, but Cyperus serotinus did not die. When vegetative organs of perenivial weeds setted on the soil surface, the propagation organ of Potamegeton distinctus did not die by desication in 17% of soil moisture, but Cyperus serotinus and Sagittaria pygmaea were dead within 2 to 3 hours in 25^\circ C of soil moisture.

  • The objective of this paper was to examine the response of rice seedling emergence and early growth under the different temperature (day/night, 29/21$^{\circ}C$, 17/17$^{\circ}C$, 12/12$^{\circ}C$) and the different seeding depth (1 cm, 2 cm, 3 cm). The trial was carried out in the phytotron and field in the Crop Experiment Station, Suwon, Korea in 1985. Calcium peroxide-coated seeds were very effctive in promoting seedling emergence, seedling establishment and eary growth of rice. Coated seeds were more effective in low temperature condition (17/17$^{\circ}C$, 12/12$^{\circ}C$) than in high temperature (29/21$^{\circ}C$) at the phytotron trial. The deeper the seeding depth, the less the emergence and seedling establishment, and the available seeding depth was I cm in the direct seeding under the flooded soil. In the field trial (seeding date, May 1) the results for the emergence and seedling establishment were similar to those in the phytotron trial. Available cultivars for the direct seeding cultivation under the flooded soil were Cheonmabyeo, Namyangbyeo, Kihobyeo, Akibare, Nakdongbyeo and Dongjinbyeo in Japonica type, and Taebaegbyeo, Samgangbyeo and Gayabyeo in Indica x Jponica type. Coefficients of variation to the emergence and seedling establishment between rice cultivars were very high. Therefore, in the direct seeding cultivation under the submerged paddy, choice of rice cultivars and improved technique for direct seeding will be more necessary.

  • The occurrence and regional distribution of low temperature and drought during rice cropping period in Korea were studied to characterize the climatic impacts. The long term changes in rice yield, air temperature and precipitation were analyzed, and regional distributions were characterized. The significant climatic impacts on rice yield were heavy rain or flood, drought and low temperature. Since 1910, the occurrence of drought was 29 times, that of flood was 24 times and that of low temperature was 9 times; however, the drought and flood damages were decreased due to expansion of irrigation system since 1970 but low temperature damage was remarkedly increased. The long term changes in air temperature since 1908 in Suweon showed that the 5-year moving average from July to August decreased while that from May to June increased. The occurrence probability of the long term and early term low temperature types were the greatest in Korea and were in order of Suweon, Daegu and Kwangiu. The long term changes in 10-year moving average precipitation from April to June showed a 15 year cycle and recent years were in low precipitation period. The drought frequencies were the highest in Daegu and Pohang area. According to the precipitation from April to June and resevtoir storage at late June, the severest dry area were the Youngnam inland and the southwest coastal area.

  • Climate in the year of 2000 was characterized as a long severe drought in tile spring, unusually high and low temperature in summer, two times of typoons, and floods by heavy rains in fall. Rice leaf and panicle blast and bacterial grain rot occurred severely comparing with 1999 and Bipolaris leaf spot spread over tile country. Phytophthora blight and anthracnose in red-pepper became epidemic especially in the late season causing severe yield losses. Tomato fusaruim wilt, CGMMV, powdery mildew, and sudden wilt syndrom of cucurbits and strawberry powdery mildew were also severe in 2000. In garlic, sclerotium rot occurred severely mainly due to the frequent rainfalls in planting time and much snowfalls in 1999's winter. Spring potato had severe infection of viruses due to a long spring drought, and fall potato had high incidence of bacterial soft rot and bacterial wilt due to fall floods by heavy rains. In sweet potato fusarium wilt was the most severe as in other year. Disease incidence of apple and pear trees was rotatively mild compared with previous years. In wheat and barley, Gibberella petch rarely occurred because of spring drought.

  • Water quality and epiphytic diatom on the submerged stems of reed (Phragmites communis), which occupy 90% of the Donghwa wetland macrophytes were monthly monitored at three points such as inflow stream, high- and low-level wetlands, and outflow stream between March and October, 2005. 1) A diverse and high density of diatom species observed in the cold-season, especially Nitzschia palea and Nitzschia amphibia dominated the diatom community without wetlands. 2) High DAIpo and TDI indices were measured over the sampling periods and stations, regardless of nitrogen increase and phosphorus increase through the wetlands. 3) Higher density of diatom species in high wetland than low wetlands was attributed in the enough nutrients and light penetration by low growth of reed. Therefore, epiphytic diatom of reed stem in Donghwa wetland, where high nutrients released from the sediment and reed debris after the death of macrophytes, flourished with low canopy of low reed vegetation.

  • The effects of some soil conditions on the degradation rate and decomposing pattern of parathion were investigated and the obtained results are summarized as follows: Parathion degraded more rapidly in flooded soils than in non-flooded, in wet soils than in dry soils under non-flooded soils. The degradation rates in paddy and upland soils increased at high temperature than low temperature, higher pesticide concentration than low concentration and higher soil pH level. Parathion in paddy and upland soils was more persistent under soil sterilization than under non-sterilization and degraded rapidly in glucose application. Parathion was more persistent in upland soils than paddy soils under several factors described above. The metabolites identified from the paddy and upland soils by TLC include para-oxon (Rf 0.5), aminoparathion(Rf 0.27), p-nitrophenol(Rf 0.2), p-aminophenol(Rf 0.15). Soil enzyme, acid phosphatase activities decreased more at flooded soils than non-flooded, higher pesticide concentration than low concentration and higher soil pH level and the activity in glucose application was increased. Soil enzymes, urease and dehydrogenase activity decreased more at higher pesticide concentration than low concentration. Comparing with soil enzyme activity in paddy and upland soil, the former was higher than the latter.

  • Among various environmental stresses, humid stress lacks mechanisms and biochemical understanding compared to drought, low temperature, and high salt stresses. The aim of this study was to investigate enzyme activity of field crops under humidity stress. Results of this study could be used as basic data for understanding humidity stress and early diagnosis. Growth and enzyme activities of sesame, perilla, red beans, sorghum, and beans as major field crops in Korea when flooded were investigated. It was confirmed that growths of both shoots and roots were retarded. In plants, anaerobic fermentation occurred due to flooding stress, which increased the activity of alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) compared to the control group. Increases of reactive oxygen species (ROS) were also observed. All flooded plants showed increased peroxidase (POD) activity and lipid peroxidation. Their dyeing strength was darker than that of the control group, even in 3,3'-diaminobenzidine (DAB) staining. Since enzyme activity changes in plants appear relatively faster than changes in phenotype at the ground level, they could be used as biomarkers for early diagnosis of humidity stress in crops.

  • As livestock consumption in Korea has been gradually increasing, the quality of the final products has been improved to meet this increased demand. In particular, maintaining the water holding capacity (WHC) and minimizing the drip loss during the thawing of frozen meat are of utmost importance. This study investigated the physicochemical properties of frozen pork subjected to thawing under different conditions: at room temperature (20℃, under air), at a low temperature (4℃ refrigerator, under air), under water (20℃, under water in a vacuum bag), under microwave (microwave-thawing, 260 W), and under low-pressure tumbling (20℃, 0.015 bar, tumbling). The shortest thawing time for frozen pork was recorded upon low-pressure tumbling thus indicating a fast heat transfer. The lowest drip loss (0.2%) and highest WHC (94.5%) were also recorded under this condition. A significantly higher drip loss was observed upon microwave- (1.0%) and water-thawing (1.2%), which resulted in the lowest WHC in microwave thawing (87.2%). The highest total count of aerobic bacteria and coliform group were observed upon room temp thawing while the low pressure tumbling and thawing resulted in the lowest aerobic bacteria (1.90 log CFU/g) and coliform (0.78 log CFU/g) count. Consequently, thawing by low pressure tumbling afforded the best food quality.
