Diagnosis of Low-Level Aviation Turbulence Using the Korea Meteorological Administration Post Processing (KMAPP) (고해상도 규모상세화 수치자료 산출체계(KMAPP)를 이용한 저고도 항공난류 진단)

  • In order to diagnose low-level turbulence in Korea, diagnostic indices of low-level turbulence were calculated from Aug 2016 to Jul 2019 using a Korea Meteorological Administration Post Precessing (KMAPP) developed by the National Institute Meteorological Sciences (NIMS), and the indices were evaluated using Aircaft Meteorological Data Relay (AMDAR). In the mean horizontal distribution of diagnostic indices calculated, severe turbulence was simulated along major domestic mountains, including near the Taebaek Mountains, the Sobaek Mountains and Hallasan Mountain on Jeju Island due to geographical factors. Later, detection performance was evaluated by calculating the KMAPP Low-Level Turbulencd index (KLT) on combined index, using AUC value of Individual diagnostic indices as a weight. The result showed that the AUC value of KLT was 0.73, and the detection performance was improved (0.02-0.13) when the index was combined. Also, when looking for the AMDAR data is divided into years, seasons, and altitudes, up to 0.94 AUC values were found in winter (DJF) and the surface (surface-1,000ft). By using high-resolution numerical data reflecting detailed terrain data, local turbulence distribution was well demonstrated and high detection performance was shown at low-level.

  • This paper introduces the system for KAU-SPUAV, which is designed and developed by Korea Aerospace University, and verifies its performance through flight test. Specification of two versions of KAU-SPUAV, avionics system, and Ground Control System (GCS) are introduced. Three missions are performed with suggested UAVs: LTE signal mapping, circumnavigation of Jeju island seashore, and long endurance flight. Each mission consists of long distance and long endurance flight which takes advantage of KAU-SPUAV. Research team of KAU-SPUAV confirmed its versatility through suggested flight data. Also based on flight results, the team found the potential of performance improvement of KAU-SPUAV.

  • The guided missiles and decoy systems that have been developed have been likened to a spear and shield. When a new attack system appears, another defense system is developed, and the attack system is once again upgraded to neutralize it. Now, due to the limitations of the decoy system, guided weapons have become the main force of both the defense and attack systems. Also, these systems have been expanded to use Space systems as a means of defending against a guided weapon system that is too fast for terrestrial-based systems. Induced weapon systems started at the sub-sonic level, and have become so important that their speeds have become super-sonic and hyper-sonic. The concept of Space has been included in the range of guided missiles, and satellite systems have become essential elements of guided missiles. Focusing on the correlation between the guided missile system and the satellite system, we analyze the characteristics of modern guided munitions and the direction of development of the guided weapons system.

  • UPRT(Upset Prevention And Recovery Training) is an accident prevention training program developed over a three-year period after the main cause of aircraft accidents in commercial aviation between 2001 and 2011 was analyzed as LOC-I(Loss Of Control Flight). In 2014, ICAO presented UPRT for fixed-wing aircraft through Doc.10011(Manual On Aeroplane Upset Prevention And Recovery Training) and recommended mandatory implementation to Contracting States from March 2019. Since naval P-3C is a major mission of maritime patrol and anti-submarine warfare, it takes a lot of time to fly at low altitude (70-600 m), and the majority of P-3C pilots have experienced spatial disorientation, so Upset prevention and recovery training is essential for naval P-3C pilots. To this end, this study intends to present measures for UPRT from limited conditions using the P-3C simulator owned by the Navy.

Investigation of Ground Remote Sensing Technique Using CCD Camera (CCD 카메라를 이용한 지상원격탐사 기술 개발)

  • Recently, in the case of observing the global environment, satellite remote sensing technology has been important. It's because satellite remote sensing is valuable for assessing relatively large areas. But now, small scale remote sensing techniques are needed which can be applicable to the detail investigation of plant tree areas which afforest land after the large scale construction of roads, dams and airports. In this study, we tried to develop and propose a lower altitude sensing technique which can be used in ground remote sensing by using a CCD camera. As a result of this investigation the following can be concluded: We recognized the transference characteristics of filters which were used in comparative tests about the four ground remote sensing devices. We also found that the near-IR camera could be used for an imaging spectral radiometer in the extraction of the vegetation index. Furthermore, we found that the vegetation index has varied hour by hour during the day of the experiment. Finally, we brought about an increase phase of the NDVI in a forest fire, which caused considerable damage, by developing new ground remote sensing technology.

A Visualization Method of High Definition Weather Radar Information for various GIS Platforms (다양한 GIS 플랫폼을 위한 고해상도 기상레이더 정보 시각화 기법)

  • According to development of weather radar, researches about observation, analysis or forecast of weather phenomena such as tornado, flash-flood etc. were encouraged by reducing frequency interferences, transmission noises, attenuations of radar signal. In contrast, there is a growing interest in the visualization and expression methods for weather radar data but weather radar manufacturers or the organs of government for weather are just busy interpreting expressed weather images projected on GIS. We propose an effective high definition weather radar information visualization method able to apply various GIS platforms to observe and take actions against rapid local weather changes effectively. In this paper, first we change information acquired from weather radar to raster or vector type high definition data structures using specific algorithms. And then, we quadrate our processed raster/vector type weather data with various GIS platforms accurately to make observers can recognize and check weather situations over exact geographical positions and elevations intuitively. Experimental results verify that our method make observers can recognize and analyze weather changes, tornados, local downpours or flash floods accurately by analyzing high definition weather radar data combined with GIS platform including detailed target locations and elevations.

Spatial-Temporal Patterns and Recent Changes of Tropical Night Phenomenon in South Korea (우리나라 열대야 현상 발생의 시.공간적 특징과 최근의 변화)

  • This study examines relationships between climatic factors and spatial-temporal patterns and recent changes of tropical night phenomenon(TN) occurring through nighttime stages in South Korea. Frequencies of daily TN at different times of night are extracted from long term(1973-2004) 6 hourly nighttime(9PM and 3AM) temperature and daily minimum temperature data at 61 weather stations. Temporally, the occurrences of TN are more pronounced in the evening(9PM) and during the Changma Break period(late July - early August). Spatially, the TNs in the evening frequently occur in the urbanized inland cities at low latitudes due to urban heat islands, whereas the TNs in the middle of night(3AM) or at dawn frequently appeared along the coastal areas within 30km from ocean due to the thermal inertia of ocean. By contrast, the evening(dawn) TN is not seen in the highlands whose elevation is greater than 800m(300m) along the Taebaek and Sobaek mountain ridges due to temperature lapse rates with height Correlation and multivariate regression analyses reveal that the impacts of human or physical climatic factors, such as latitude, elevation, proximity to ocean, and population density, are diverse on the frequencies of TN according to nighttime stages. Recent temporal changes of the late Changma period and intensified urbanization during the 1990s have increased the occurances of TN in urban areas. Therefore, strategies to mitigate the increasing urban TN should be prepared in the near future.

Evaluation of Internal Quality of Kale Leaf by Non-Destructive Color Measurement (비파괴적 엽색분석을 통한 케일 잎의 내적품질 평가)

  • Kale leaf had similar contents of vitamin C, $NO_3$, p, Ca, Mg, and Fe with reported values. Among these internal quality factors, $NO_3$ content which has been a concern recently, ranged from 139 to 429 mg in 100 g fresh kale leaf, Kale showed high vitamin C content ranging from 106 to 203 mg in 100 g fresh leaf. The relative concentration of chlorophyll and b value color had a high correlation coefficient (r) with vitamin C, $NO_3$, Mg and Fe content. The relationship between $NO_3$ content and the relative concentration of chlorophyll was given by the following linear equation: $NO_3$ content : 21.55 + (5.907 ${\times}$ the relative concentration of chlorophyll) with an r of $0.910^{{\ast}{\ast}}$. Correlation between $NO_3$ content and b value was also very dependable (r = $-0.901^{{\ast}{\ast}}$). Vitamin C content and the relative concentration of chlorophyll showed a high correlation, r = $-0.858^{{\ast}{\ast}}$. Among internal quality factors, vitamin C content increased with decreasing $NO_3$ content and their correlation coefficient was high (r = $-0.795^{{\ast}{\ast}}$). Consequently, $NO_3$ content of kale leaf could be inferred from an external nondestructive method, such as the relative concentration of chlorophyll. We may be able to produce high quality kale leaves containing high amount of vitamin C and low content of $NO_3$ using this method.

Height perception of large airplane pilots during landing flare (대형 비행기 조종사의 착륙 조작 시의 높이지각)

  • Pilots of large airplanes have to land their airplanes with insufficient visual information because of high approach speed, high vertical velocity and high location or altitude of the cockpits from the runway intending to touch down. This study verifies that, due to the insufficient information, large airplane pilots can't exactly perceive height of their airplanes during the flare. Study 1 explored whether it's possible for the pilots to accurately perceive height with the static visual cues only. We showed them pictures of the runway taken from the pilot's pionts of view and asked them to assess the height of the airplanes. They determined exact height of the airplanes at the height of 85 feet, but they could not, at lower than 55 feet which is the flare preparation altitude. Study 2 explored whether it's possible for the pilots to accurately perceive height when dynamic cues were added to the static visual cues. We showed them videos of the runway taken from the pilot's pionts of view. With more cues they determined exact height of the airplanes at the height of 50 feet, but they could not, at the altitude of lower than 30 feet which is the flare altitude. As experience is believed to be a major factor which affects interpretation of the visual cues, we compared the accuracy of the assessment of the experienced captions and that of the in-experienced first officers. We found there was no significant difference between them.

Effects of Hihh Amplitude Prestraining Vibrations on Shear Modulus of Sands (고 변형률 반복 진동이 모래의 전단 탄성계수에 미치는 영향)

  • Recently, testing equipment which can run resonant column test altogether with the torsional shear test at the very highly controlled condition was developed at the University of Texas at Austin(U.S.A). With this equipment, the effects of high amplitude pre-straining vibrations on the dynamic properties of clean sands were studied. Tests showed the following results. Low amplitude shear modulus was gradually increased with little void ratio change as the number of high amplitude vibration cycles increased. Variation of volumetric strain with confining pressure for the pre -strained specimen under vibration was smaller than that of fresh specimen. Also the slope of the diagram for shear modulus and confining pressure relationship of the prestrained specimen was smaller than that of fresh specimens. These results agreed well with the analytical results.
