  • In order to determine the optimum planting density of Perilla frutescens which is suitable for the southern part of Korea, agronomic characters, yield of fresh stem, leaf and seed, and yield components were investigated grown in 1985 and 1986 at Mokpo Branch Station of Crop Experiment Station. The heading date was Aug. $14{\sim}15$ and the blooming period was Aug. $19{\sim}21$ regardless of the difference of plant density, but the longest stem length was 135cm in the plant density of $70{\time}40cm$ and the stem length in the plant density of $80{\time}40cm$ was 134cm. The quantity of fresh weight of stem and leaf and fresh weight of seed was high as 531kg/l0a in the plant density of $80{\time}40cm$. The positive correlation such as $0.7315^*,\;0.9024^{**}\;and\;0.7425^*$ were found between stem length and fresh weight of stem and leaf, stem length and fresh weight of seed, fresh weight of stem and leaf and fresh weight of seed and so high significance was recongnized. In the verification of significance of row spacing, the disperse of the stem length was $55.67^{**}$, that of fresh weight of stem and leaf is $268.50^*$, theat of fresh weight of seed was $16.00^{**}$ and high significance was recognized. In the verification of significance of intrarow spacing, the diperse of stem length was $54.21^{**}$, that of fresh weight of stem and leaf was $2,582.00^{**}$, that of fresh weight of seed was $48.00^{**}$ and then high significance was recognized. Accordingly, the proper plant density of perilla frutescens was 80cm of row $spacing{\time}40cm$ of intrarow spacing.

  • In order to determine the optimum planting density of Sickle Senna (Cassia tora L.), agronomic characters, yield components and grain yield were investigated under vinyl mulching and non -mulching condition. The characters, stem length, stem diameter, number of branches, number of pods per plant, number of pods per m$^2$, and number of grains per pod, etc., were excellent under the vinyl mulching condition, and number of pods per m$^2$ was the highest in 60$\times$15cm planting space under vinyl mulching or non-mulching. Both of the weight of 100 grains and grain yield were also higher under the vinylmulching condition, and grain yield was the most excellent in 60$\times$15cm planting space under the vinlymulching, or non-mulching. Under the vinyl mulching and non-mulching, the analysis of variance for agronomic characters following the difference of planting density, were acknowledged to be worth of attention.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the optimum planting density in low fertilizing cultivation of machine transplanting in rice field of Honam Agricultural Research Institute, NICS for $2004{\sim}2005$. Sobibyeo which belongs to medium maturing variety and Nampyeongbyeo which belongs to medium-late maturing variety were transplanted on May 30. In this experiment, there was no significant difference in heading date between planting density and nitrogen fertilization rate, and heading dates were August 8 in Sobibyeo, and August 14 in Nampyeongbyeo respectively. In relation to lodging character, lodging Index was high where the nitrogen fertilization rate and planting density were high. As planting density increases, panicle number per $m^{2}$ increased irrespective of nitrogen fertilization rate. When nitrogen was 6 kg/10a, rice yield of Sobibyeo was more where planting density was 90 hill per $3.3m^{2}$, and that of Nampyeongbyeo was more where planting density was 80 hill per $3.3m^{2}$. When nitrogen was 9 kg/10a, rice yield of Sobibyeo was more where planting density was 100 hill per $3.3m^{2}$, and that of Nampyeongbyeo was more where planting density was 110 hill per $3.3m^{2}$. Head rice rate of brown rice was higher when planting density increased, and was higher at 6 kg/10a nitrogen rate than 9 kg/10a nitrogen rate in all varieties.

  • This study was conducted to establish the fundamental of cultivation system in southern warm region of Korea by investigation of variation of yield component and yield under the different planting density, and that was 50, 70, 90 and 110 hills per 3.3㎡. In variations of thickness of culm under the different planting densities there were more thick as decrease in density, and there were fine culm in May 20 transplanting. In Seokwang, the optimum planting density was 90 hills/3.3㎡ in May 20 and June 5 transplanting, but in June 20 and July 5, it was 110 hills/3.3㎡, then in Dongjin, the maximum grain yield was obtained on 90 hills/303㎡ in May 20, June 5, June 20 transplanting, but in July 5 transplanting the highest yield was obtained in the plot of density 110 hills/303㎡. The rate of ripened grains was higher in the high density than that of low density on the late season culture. The degeneration of primary, secondary branches and spikelets was decreased with increase in planting density, and there was more significant tendency in Seokwang than in Dongjin. The no. of panicles per m2 was increased linearly with increase in planting density, and the variation of no. of panicles per m2 according to transplanting periods was greater in Seokwang than in Dongjin.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the aspect of tiller occurrence, growth and yield of sorghum according to planting distance and sowing date. The object of this experiment is to get basic data to inhibit non-productive tillers uneconomical and cumbersome for mechanical harvesting. Also another object was to evaluate optimum planting distance and sowing date in central district area. Total number of tillers was more in 80 cm ridge than 60 cm ridge and it was increased as the planting distance was wider from 15 cm to 30 cm on the each ridge. Ratio of effective tillers was higher in 60 cm ridge than 80 cm ridge and it was decreased as planting distance was wider from 15 cm to 30 cm. The lower the planting distance, the more increased total number of tillers, whereas effective tillers was decreased as planting distance was high. Average of total number of tillers of three varieties was higher in sowing date of May 2 (1st sowing date), whereas ratio of effective tillers was the highest in sowing date of May 23 (2nd sowing date). Hwanggeumchal showed the highest total number of tillers (1.2 tillers), while Moktaksusu had the lowest total number of tillers (0.8 tillers) among three varieties. There were no significant difference between planting distance and days to heading and ripening date from seeding. Culm length increased as planting distance was high, but ear length, grains per ear and 1000 grain weight were decreased on the other hand. The highest yield of sorghum per 10a was obtained from $60{\times}20cm$ planting distance among 6 planting distances.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of planting density on plant growth, yield, and quality in the sweet sorghum cultivar 'Chorong' (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench). Plants were cultivated at densities of 16.7, 11.1, 8.3, 6.7, and $5.6plants{\cdot}m^{-2}$. Factors related to yield and yield components were analyzed using correlation and multivariate analyses. There was no significant difference among plant densities in stem length from 20 to 110 days after sowing. But the stem diameter was thin, and a decrease in number of tillers occurred more rapidly as planting density increased. At harvest, juice and sugar yield were higher at densities of 16.7 (42.9, $4.16Mg{\cdot}ha^{-1}$, respectively) and 11.1 (37.1, $3.73Mg{\cdot}ha^{-1}$) $plants{\cdot}m^{-2}$ than at 8.3 (30.5, $2.96Mg{\cdot}ha^{-1}$), 6.7 (26.6, $2.41Mg{\cdot}ha^{-1}$), and 5.6 (24.7, $2.22Mg{\cdot}ha^{-1}$) $plants{\cdot}m^{-2}$. The soluble solids and total sugar contents were not different among treatments, but relatively high values were observed at the density of 11.1 and $8.3plants{\cdot}m^{-2}$. As plant density was increased from 5.6 to $11.1plants{\cdot}m^{-2}$, the lodging index (1 = no, 9 = lodging) increased rapidly from 2.00 to 6.33. To determine the optimal planting density, the number of typhoons and topographical characteristics should be considered. Correlation and principal components analyses revealed that plant density exhibited a positive relationship with fresh stem yield ($r=0.62^{**}$), dry stem yield ($r=0.58^{**}$), juice ($r=0.63^{**}$), and sugar yield ($r=0.66^{**}$), but a negative with stem diameter ($r=-0.65^{**}$). The yield factors were not statistically related to stem height, diameter, and number of nodes.
