  • A series of parametric investigations are performed in order to resolve the flow characteristic of a Quebec city stoker incinerator. The parameters considered in this study are five internal configurations of the Quebec city stoker itself and its modified ones, primary air velocity, the injection velocity and angle of the secondary air, and the reduction of the stoker exit area. A control-volume based finite-difference method by Patankar together with the power-law scheme is employed for discretization. The resolution of the pressure-velocity coupling is made by the use of SIMPLEC algorithm. The standard, two equation, k-$\varepsilon$ model is incorporated for the closure of turbulence. The size of recirculation region, turbulent viscosity, the mass fraction of the secondary air and pressure drop are calculated in order to analyze the characteristics of flow field. The results are physically acceptable and discussed in detail. The flow field of the Quebec city stoker shows the strong recirculation zone together with the high turbulence intensity over the upper part of the incinerator.

  • In this study, we analyzed the flow characteristics in the wide-crested side weir of trapezoidal section by using a three dimensional numerical stimulation. From this study, as the Froude number increases in the main channel, the overflow discharge ratio and the discharge coefficient of lateral overflow tend to decrease. And it was also found that the increase of the lateral overflow reduces the channel discharge area in the downstream, and the size of recirculating zone is increasing in the opposite side of side weir. The stream-wise water surface on the side where the side weir is installed falls down rapidly in the weir starting point, gradually ascending, and rapidly rising at the end point. The reason why the water surface rapidly rises at the weir end point is because the weir end point hinders the flow.

  • An ejector is a fluid machinery to be utilized for mixing fluids, maintaining vacuum, and transporting them. The Ejector is applied for a variety of industrial fields such as refrigerators and power plants. It is adopted to recycle anode off gas safely in 5kW Molten Carbonate Fuel Cell system of KEPRI(Korea Electric Power Research Institute). The ejector is placed at mixing point between the anode off gas and the cathode off gas or the fresh air. In this study, the entrainment ratio is measured according to the diametrical ratio of nozzle to throat. In addition, the performance curve of the ejector and the differential pressure in diffuser is observed.

  • An experimental study on the flow characteristics was performed for a two-dimensional turbulent wall attaching offset jet at different oblique angles to a surface. The flow characteristics were investigated by using a split film probe with the modified Stock's calibration method. The jet mean velocity, turbulent intensity, wall static pressure coefficient profiles, and time-averaged reattachment point were measured at the Reynolds number Re (based on the nozzle width, D) ranging from 17700 to 53200, the offset ratio H/D from 2.5 to 10, and the inclined angle .alpha. from 0.deg. C to 40.deg. C. The Correlations between the maximum pressure position, minimum pressure position, and reattachment point and offset ratios, and inclined angles are presented.

  • Numerical analysis has been carried out to investigate air-side convective heat transfer characteristics in compact heat exchangers with continuous plate fins. Simulation results such as air flow and temperature distributions are presented, and heat transfer characteristics are compared for various inlet conditions. Results from various turbulence models are also compared for applicability. There is large difference between the local heat transfer coefficient distributions along the cylinder wall for circular tubes. Colburn j factors from the calculated results of circular and flat tubes in the heat exchangers are compared for various Reynolds number. The predicted results in this study can be applied to the optimal design of air conditioning system. with compact heat exchanger.

  • In this paper, an efficient signal interference control technique to improve the convergence speed of Adaptive transversal filter with LMS algorithm is introduced. The convergence characteristics of the proposed algorithm, whose coefficients are multiply adapted in a symbol time period by recycling the received data, are analyzed to prove theoretically the improvement of convergence speed. According as the step-size parameter ${\mu}$ is increased, the rate of convergence of the algorithm is controlled. Increasing the eigenvalue spread has the effect of controlling down the rate of convergence of the adaptive equalizer and also increasing the steady-state value of the average squared error and also demonstrate the superiority of signal interference control to the filter algorithm increasing convergence speed by (B+1) times due to the data-recycling LMS Algorithms.

  • To evaluate the usage of $\kappa-\imath$ turbulence closure for the analysis of thermal discharge behavior, a two-dimensional depth-integrated numerical model is developed. The developed model is applied to a steady flow in an open channel with simle geometry and the numerical results agree well with existing experimental data. The adequate simulation of recirculation, reattachment, and excess temperature rise at downstream of the outlet in the channel attributes to the correct calculation of turbulent eddy viscosity and diffusivity by $\kappa-\imath$ turbulence model. For an accurate prediction of thermal discharge behavior, the introduction of buoyancy production term, the modification of source/sink, and the correct input of turbulence constants of the $\kappa-\imath$ turbulence model are required.

  • Numerical analysis has been carried out to investigate air-side convective heat transfer characteristics in a compact heat exchanger with flat tubes and continuous plate fins according to the aspect ratio. RNG k-$\varepsilon$ model is applied for turbulence analysis. Simulation results such as air velocity and temperature distributions are presented, and heat transfer coefficients are compared with previous correlations for circular tubes. The numerical conditions are considered for the aspect ratios ranging from 3.06 to 5.44 and Reynolds number ranging from 1000 to 10,000. The results showed that heat transfer coefficients decreased with the increase of aspect ratio. From the calculated results a correlation of Colburn j factor for the considered aspect ratio in the compact heat exchanger system is suggested. The predicted results in this study can be applied to the optimal design of air conditioning system.

  • Numerical analysis has been carried out to investigate air-side convective heat transfer characteristics in a compact heat exchanger with circular tubes and continuous plate fins. Simulation results such as air velocity and temperature distributions are presented, and heat transfer coefficients are compared with previous experimental correlations. Three models of standard and RNG $k-{\varepsilon}$, and Reynolds stress are applied for turbulence model applicability. Predicted heat transfer coefficient from the models of standard and RNG $k-{\varepsilon}$ are very close to those of the heat transfer correlations while there are relatively large difference, more than 17 percentage in the result from the Reynolds stress model. From the calculated results a correlation for Colburn j factor in the compact heat exchanger system is suggested.
