Rhizobium meliloti Populations and Alfalfa Yields Due to Nitrogen Fertilization and Inoculation Methods at Cultivated Upland Soil (숙전(熟田)에서 질소시용(窒素施用)과 Rhizobium meliloti의 접종방법(接種方法)이 근류균(根瘤菌) 밀도(密度) 및 알팔파 수량(收量)에 미치는 영향(影響))

  • Inoculation responses of alfalfa[Medicago sativa(L.) Vernal] to Rhizobium meliloti with nitrogen fertilization were characterized by soil populations and plant yields from 1989 to 1991 at cultivated upland soil, which contained $3.1{\times}10$cells of R. meliloti/g.soil. The results obtained accordingly to fertilizing with 8Kg N/10a and differently inoculating the host such as initial and annual inoculation methods were as follows : 1. Soil populations of R. meliloti were increased more at no nitrogen fertilized condition compared to nitrogen fertilized condition to 2nd year experiment from 1st year that came up $1.6{\times}10^3$cells/g.soil, but at 3rd year the trend was reversed. Between inoculation methods, on the whole, the annual inoculation caused more populations, which were $2.0{\times}10^4$cells/g.soil in maximum number. And the populations declined after winter but recovered passing through summer season. 2. Alfalfa yields were mainly influenced by rhizobial populations rather than by fertilizing nitrogen showing a significant correlation(Y=0.36+0.287X, $r^2=0.58^{**}$) with the former. The increased extents of yields obtained by inoculation at no nitrogen and nitrogen fertilized conditions, respectively, were 66 and 10% in 1st : 13 and 20% in 2nd : 19 and 13% in 3rd year experiment with the initial inoculation, and were 66 and 10% in 1st ; 30 and 20% in 2nd : 35 and 36% in 3rd year experiment with the annual inoculation. 3. The results demonstrated the importance of inoculating, if possible, annual inoculating alfalfa to get much yields even at cultivated upland soil.

Changes of Root Yield and Essential Oil Content by Cultivated Years in Asaram siebold Mio (세신의 재배년차에 따른 근수량 및 정유성분 함량변화)

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the change of root yield and essential oil contents by cultivated year in Asaram siebold Mio. Growth of aerial part such as plant height, leaf length and leaf width increased rapidly in two to three-year-old. Root length and root weight per plant were increased as cultivation year passed. Especially the speed of development was very fast in two and three-year-old alike aerial part. Root yield was the highest at five-year-old. The content of essential oil was decreased gradually as cultivation year passed. Methyleugenol content was increased, while safrole content was decreased by cultivated years. The increasing of methyleugenol content in four to five-year-old was not higher than three to four-year-old. In the result, it concluded that the optimum harvest time of Asarum sieboldi MiO is five-year-old cultivated based on root yield and effective medical components.

  • Field and pot experiments were carried to find out the effects of direct application of phosphate rock powder on soybean plant in upland soils with different available P content. In newly reclaimed upland soil with extremely low available P, phosphate rock powder was superior to single superphosphate at the application rate of 400kg-600kg/ha, in the first year particularly. In the second year, however, the reverse was the case excepting at the rate of 200kg/ha. In upland soil with low avialble $P_2O_5$($52mg\;kg^{-1}$), the application of phosphate rock powder at the high appliaction rate(400-600kg/ha) increased the yield of soybean remarkably in the first year and there was residual effect in the second year. The application of phosphate rock at high rate, increased the P and Ca contenl of plant and soil. The concentration of all fractions of P in the soil at the harvest was higher in phosphate rock treatments than in single superphosphate and fused magnesium phosphate treatments. In this soil with low avaiable P the occurrence of different fractions of P was in the order of Org-P>Fe-P>Ca-P>Al-P, in the first year and there was no change in the second year.

Underdrainage Effects on Soil Salinity and Growth of Rice in Gyehwa Reclaimed Saline Land (계화도 간탁지에서 암거배수가 토양의 염분농도와 벼의 생육 및 수량에 미치는 영향)

  • This experiment was carried out from 1979 till 1983 to elucidate the underdrainage effect on soil salinity and growth of rice plastic underdrainage was established 5m and 8m intervals in April of 1979 and Jinjubyeo the medium maturing rice variety was transplanted by hand at late of May. The results are as follow; The desalination effect was higher in 5m interval underdrainage than 8m interval underdrainage and the salt content was lower than 0.3% at 1 year after in 5m interval, 2 years after in 8m interval underdrainage and 3 years after at control. Farther the distance from underdrainage position, less the desalinization rate that desalinization was least at center part of the underdrainage position. Desalinization effect was highest 30cm of soil depth and decreased deeper than it. Shorter the underdrainage interval, more the panicle number, heavier 1, 000 grain weight and higher the milled rice yield. But the milled rice yield wasn't significantly different between the underdrainage interval from 3 years after underdrainage.

  • The effects of various factors affacting yield and its components in rice were estimated by analzing the yield forcasting trial data from 1966 to 1979. The results obtained are as follows: 1. The year effects was increased by 3.46kg per year, and one day early planting increased by 2,26kg. 2. The effect of japonica vareties was negative while that of indica-japonica hybrid varieties was positive and the effect of each varities was increased by 3.46kg per year. 3. The contribution of each effect of the planting date, nitrogen varity, pest control and other improvement of cultivation to yield was estimated as 1.76kg (14.5%), I.04kg (8.7%), 5.84kg(48.2%), 3.47kg(28.6%) per year, respectively.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the boron phyto-toxicity on soybean grown on the potted soil amended with 20% by weight of fly ash with high and medium boron contents Of two years experiment, the first year experiment observed the direct effect and the 2nd year experiment the residual effect. Soybean growth and yield were normal with incorporation of 20% fly ash with normol B content. With high B flyash, however, the performance of soybean was poor due to B toxicity. Therefore, it is suggested that in determining the application rate of flyash, B content should be taken in account.

Comparison of composition and antioxidant activity of Poria cocos Wolf cultivated in a mortuary and cemetery (시설 및 토경재배 복령의 시기별 성분 및 항산화 활성)

  • This study was conducted to compare the composition and antioxidant activity of 1- and 2-year-old Poria cocos Wolf cultivated at a mortuary and cemetery. An elemental analyzer test showed oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and sulfur to be present at concentrations of 45~46%, 39~41%, 6.06~6.1%, 0.21~0.22%, and 0%, respectively. No differences in composition were observed among samples. Eleven minerals (S, Ca, Mg, P, As, Se, Cu, Fe, Pb, Zn, and Cd) found in P. cocos cultivated at the mortuary and cemetery were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP). The levels of S, Fe, Mg, and Zn in P. cocos were higher in cemetery-cultivated samples than in mortuary-cultivated samples. A 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay for antioxidant activity revealed half-maximal inhibitory concentration ($IC_{50}$)values of P. cocos to be 8.601 mg/mL (mortuary, 1 year old), 12.85 mg/mL (cemetery, 1 year old), 1.23 mg/mL (mortuary, 2 years old), and 1.18 mg/mL (landfill, 1 year old). A 2,2'-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) assay revealed $IC_{50}$ values of 15.85 mg/mL (mortuary, 1 year old),14.59 mg/mL(cemetery, 1 year old), 3.9 mg/mL (mortuary, 2 years old), and 14.92 mg/mL (cemetery, 1 year old). The results showed a concentration-dependent effect. Two-year-old mortuary-cultivated P. cocos had the highest antioxidant activity among samples. Ultrastructure analysis with a field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) showed no obvious differences among samples.

  • This study was carried out by investigating the changes of physico-chemical and mechanical properties of Gwanghwal and Poseung series in order to obtain basic information on the soil improvement and management. 1. In Gwanghwal series, the content of salt in soil and ground water before rice transplanting at the 21st year after reclamation were 0.29 and 1.02 percent respectively, and the safty cultivation of paddy rice was possible after 33 years of reclamation in both soil series. 2. Clay contents. atterberg limits and clay activity according to the age of reclaimation showed negative correlation. but sand content and N-value were positive in them. 3. Cone index was lower than $3kg/cm^2$ for the first 5 years after reclaimation in both soil series, and the formation of hard pan were 33rd and 49th year after reclamation in Gwanghwal and Poseung series respectively, and its thickness was more in Poseung than in Gwanghwal series. 4. Shearing resistance decreased with the age of reclaimation in both soil series. and friction resistance increased in Gwanghwal than Poseung siries. 4. Soil pH. available, $SiO_2$, $Mg^2$, $K^+$, $Na^+$ and C. E. C showed negative correlation. with the year cultivated paddy rice. but O. M. ava ilable $P_2O_5Ca^{2+}$ and T-N had positive one in both soil series. Contents of O. M and $Ca^{2+}$ and T-N had positive one in both soil series. Contents of O. M and $Ca^{2+}$ were high in Gwanghwal, but C. E. C. was in Poseung series.

Distribution and Mobility of Herbicide $^{14}C$-Molinate in a Rice-Paddy-Soil Lysimeter (벼 재배 Lysimeter 환경에서 제초제 $^{14}C$-molinate의 분포 및 이동성 평가)

  • This study was designed to assess molinate fate in the lysimeter by measuring the total radioactivity in the leachate, evolved $^{14}CO_2$, and $^{14}C$-residues in soil and rice plant. The amounts of applied $^{14}C$ in the leachate from the lysimeter for 20 weeks were 1.05% in 2.31 pore volume (217,465 mL) at the first and 0.34% in the second year, respectively. The amount of $^{14}CO_2$ evolved from the lysimeter accounted for 6.47% and 0.03% of applied $^{14}C$ in the first and second year. The $^{14}C$-activities in the soil layer of the lysimeter were distributed 18.0% (1st) and 13.3%(2nd) in the depth of 0 to 10 cm, 4.3 (1st) and 1.1% (2nd) in the depth of 10 to 20 cm. Most of the applied $^{14}C$ was detected in the top 20 cm soil layer. Total $^{14}C$ in rice plants grown at lysimeter were detected 11.46% of applied $^{14}C$. 11.11% in straw, 0.24% in brown rice grain, 0.08% in chaff and 0.03% in ears were distributed in the first year. Consequently, environmental fate of molinate using lysimeter simulating a paddy rice field were investigated 25.24% in soil, 11.64% in rice plant, 1.05% in leachate, 6.74% in evolved $^{14}CO_2$ and 0.02% in volatilized organic chemicals in the first year.

Effects of Soil Surface Compaction on Emergence and Growth of Directed Seeded Ginseng in Paddy Field (인삼의 논 재배시 파종 후 진압처리가 출아율과 생육에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to find out the changes in the growth and yield of ginseng and the changes in the soil of direct-seeded ginseng fields after applying different compaction strengths. As a result of surface soil compactions, the topsoil hardness increases as the strength of treatment increases in the first year but topsoil hardness increased only by applying 30 kg weight of compaction in the second year. The germination rate was significantly higher (79.4% and 79.1% at 25 kg and 30 kg, respectively) in 1st year after the application of soil surface compactions. The longest plant was 35.7 cm in 4- years old ginseng in the control and the height was 26.9 cm and 26.5 cm in the soil surface compactions of 25 kg and 30 kg, respectively. In addition, the higher weight of ginseng roots of 31.3 g and 30.3 g were observed after applying 25 kg and 30 kg compaction treatment, and the lowest root weight of 25.6 g was in the control. Therefore, it is shown that after sowing, applying the weight of 25 kg to 30 kg for soil surface compaction is appropriate for better yield in direct seeded cultivation of ginseng at paddy fields.
