  • Cultivation techniques of proso millet (Panicum miliaceum L.) and foxtail millet (Setaria italica L.), such as sowing, weeding, and harvesting, are often not properly utilized, resulting in low productivity rates. The goal of this study was to develop cultivation techniques to increase millet productivity rates and reduce labor inputs. We evaluated the effects of different machine sowing methods compared with manual sowing methods from 2014 to 2016. The three machine sowing methods were dibbling, drilling, and broadcasting. Compared with manual sowing, the broadcasting method decreased labor times by 16.07 and $14.23hr10a^{-1}$ for proso and foxtail millets, respectively. Proso millet showed greater culm lengths at 138 and 125 cm with the broadcasting method for two years, whereas foxtail millet after three years had greater culm lengths from both the drilling and broadcasting methods. Both crops exhibited the thickest culm stems in the $3^{rd}$ year. The greatest number of seeds of the panicle were from the manual sowing method in both crops. Compared with manual sowing, broadcasting increased grain yields by 15-35% and 9.1-28% for proso and foxtail millets, respectively. Therefore, we suggest that the application of broadcasting in mechanical sowing will increase labor efficiency and yields of proso and foxtail millets.

  • In order for investigating the variability of the characters related to malting barley quality of the different seed lots, about 150 seed lots sampled from the six districts in the southern parts of Cheonnam were analysed. The percentages of the first, second, and off grade of different seed lots of inspected malting barley were 25.9%, 62.7% and 11.4%, respectively. The coefficients of variation (CV) for years in the first grade was 25.0% and the off grade 43.4%. The CVs for 1,000 grain weight, assortment rate, grain colour, germination energy and capacity of different seed lots were 9.1%, 13.2%, 35.7%, 6.2% and 5.0%, respectively. Also, the CV for starch content of different seed lots was 4.8% and 9.6% for ${\beta}$-glucan, 14.0% for crude protein, 14.7% for husk rate, respectively. Seventy five percentage of seed lots in the first grade was fitted for the Agricultural Inspection Law of malting barley and the fitted rates in the second and off grade were 90% and 83%, respectively. The grade of malting barley were positively correlated with grain colour, crude protein, crude fiber, husk rate and ${\beta}$-glucan, but negatively with assortment rate, 1,000 grain weight, germination energy and capacity and starch content.

  • Changes of rice yield and soil physicochemical properties of the dry-seeded rice-barley double cropping system were investigated for 10 years from 1990 to 1999. Generally, seedling stand was more unstable in the rice-barley cropping system regardless of barley straw addition or removal than in the rice single cultivation as indicated by higher standard deviation of seedling stand across year. Rice yield in rice-barley double cropping cultivation was increased due to barley straw application starting from the second year, recording 2 to 19% increase (average of 9% for 10 years) due to higher spikelet number. Protein content and Mg/K equivalent ratio were similiar among the barley straw applied field, rice single crop and barley straw removed plots. Also, amylose content was not significantly different among cropping patterns. Physicochemical properties of soil was improved by applying the barley straw; soil porosity was higher and content of organic matter and cation exchange capacity of Ca increased but those of Mg and K did not differ.

  • In an attempt to find better ways to relate growth with temperature and to estimate maturity differences in corn (Zea mays L.), various formulas of computing Growing Degree Days (GDD) were evaluated. Utilizing data from 17 plantings of a single cross, Suweon 19, over a 3 year period, 24 different methods of computing GDD were compared for their ability to reduce variations over different plantings. The best equation was to compute GDD with a base temperature of 10$^{\circ}C$ and an optimum of 30$^{\circ}C$. The excess temperature above 30$^{\circ}C$ was subtracted to account for high temperature stress. GDDs required for emergence and silking of Suweon 19 were 64${\pm}$12$^{\circ}$ and 794${\pm}$19$^{\circ}$, respectively. Based on these GDD values, emergence and silking dates could be estimated with a variation less than 3 days. The observed and estimated number of days from planting to emergence and silking were not significantly different.

  • This study was undertaken to elucidate the effects of virus and viroid infections on the growth of trees and the attributes of fruit quality in 'Hongro' apples. Trials were initiated using virus-infected, viroid-infected, combined virus/viroid-infected, and uninfected apple trees in an experimental apple orchard at the National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science in 2019. The growth of each tree was measured annually and compared between virus-free and virus/viroid-infected trees. Fruits were harvested from all apple trees, and selected attributes of fruit quality, including yield, weight, firmness, titratable acidity, and anthocyanin content, were determined in September 2021-2022. The results revealed significant differences among virus-free trees and those infected with either virus, viroid, or a combination of virus and viroid. Infection with viral and viroid diseases led to reductions in tree height (14.0%), trunk area (23.1%), fruit yield (65.0%), fruit weight (34.4%), and anthocyanin content (39.8%), while increasing fruit firmness (33.2%) and titratable acidity (39.8%), respectively. We anticipate that our research findings will also be beneficial for apple virus and viroid disease control, as well as apple cultivation management.

  • The purpose of this study was to obtain information on rates and salinity levels of irrigation for growth of Kentucky bluegrass by minimizing the hazard of salt accumulation in the sand based growing medium. Root zone profile consists of 20 cm sand based top soil, 20 cm of coarse sand as layer to interrupt capillary rise and 10 cm of reclaimed paddy soil as a base of the root zone profile. Topsoil was a mixture of dredged sand and peat with a ratio of 95%: 5% by volume. The columns were soaked into 5 cm depth saline water reservoir with salinity level of 3-5 $dSm^{-1}$. Salinity levels of irrigation water were 0, 2 and 3 $dSm^{-1}$. Irrigation rates were 3.8, 5.7 and 7.6 mm $day^{-1}$ which were equivalent to 70%, 100% and 130% of average ET (evapotranspiration) rate of Kentucky bluegrass, and irrigation interval was 3 days. Salt accumulation was due to irrigated water and moved up water from shallow water base. At the end of second year, the accumulation of salt in the rootzone showed ECc of3.86, 4.7 and 5.1 $dSm^{-1}$, and SAR of 19.2, 23.9 and 27.5 when the salinities were 0, 2 and 3 dS $m^{-1}$, respectively. Irrigation rates of 100% and 130% of ET rate with saline water did not decrease ECe and SAR in growing media. The growth of KEG was influenced by irrigation rate in the $1^{st}$ year, however, salinity level was more critical in the $2^{nd}$ year. Compared to non-saline water, saline water of 2 and 3 dS $m^{-1}$ resulted in decreased visual quality by 3.2% and 16.5%, by 6.4% and 39.3% in clipping weight, and by 5.5% and 5.0% in root mass, respectively.

  • This study was conducted to increase the quality of Astrragali radix and to decide the application amounts of N, P and K fertilizer for Astragalus membranaceus Bunge. The ferlilizers effect on the ash contents and extracts from the root and the dried root yield was studied. With increasing the application amount of nitrogen more than 5kg/10a, the acid insoluble ash content of root increased, but the ethyl alcohol and diethyl ether extracts decreased. No effect of phosphorus amount on the ash and extracts contents in root was observed. With increasing amount more than 7kg/10a, only the acid insoluble ash contents increased. The dried root yield increased with the application level until 5kg/10a of nitrogen, but the effects ot phosphorus and potassium application were not observed. Positive correlation was obtained significantly between the ash ($r=0.746^*$) and acid insoluble ash ($r=0.858^{**}$) contents and the potassium application amount, and the negative correlation was also obtained significantly between the extract contents and the nitrogen ($r=-0.778^*$ ; $C_2H_5OH$, $r=-0.848^{**}$ ; $(C_2H_5O)_2O$) and potassium ($r=-0.772^*$ ; $(C_2H_5O)_2O)$ application amounts. As the results in the first year from the seeding, it is recommended for quality of Astragali radix to apply 5, 7-14, 7kg/10a of N, $P_2O_5$ and $K_2O$, respectively.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the changes in moth occurrence of striped rice barer, Chilo suppressalis (Walker), in relation to climatic factors, rice varieties, and cultural practices. The light trap data from 41 forecasting stations for 14 years from 1966 to 1979 were analyzed by means of the changes in the time and amount of borer occurrence in connection with the introduction of new rice varieties, the accumulated effective day-degree and its variation for completing one generation, and the climatic factors affecting the moth occurrence. The total number of moths caught by light traps in both spring and summer generations were considerably decreased with the wide cultivation of new rice varieties. In fact, the spring moths were remarkably decreased since the new varieties were introduced in 1972. The occurrence ratio of summer moths against the preceeding spring moths was higher in the middle region and middle southern mountainous area than the other regions. Its high ratio of regions was annually expanded from the middle region to the southern region. The $50\%$ emergence dates of both generations were later in the southeastern region than in the middle region. The ecological characteristics were clearly shown between the northern and southern region of Chupungryeong in terms of the occurrence of summer moths, the ratio of occurrence of summer moths to the preceeding spring moths, and $50\%$ emergence dates of the summer moths during the years of $1977\~1979$. The ratio of the summer moth occurrence to the preceeding generation was negatively correlated with the average temperature in lune and July, respectively, and the average precipitation in late June. The ratio of spring moth occurrence over the preceeding generation was positively correlated with the average temperature in September, October, November, and March, respectively, whereas it was negatively correlated with the average precipitation in early September and March, and the average humidity in early May. The effective day-degree for one generation was in the range from 600 to 900 DD at upper threshold $30^{\circ}C$ and lower threshold $10^{\circ}C$.

  • This experiment was conducted to test the suitability of various organic materials in order to reduce the use dependence of peatmoss as a soil pH regulator and to examine the effect of soil organic matter supply. A 2-year old northern-highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L.) 'Duke' plants were planted in the field at $2.0m{\times}2.5m$ spacing in spring. Before planting, organic materials were incorporated into the soil including the planting hole at 20 liter per plant, as the following mixtures: peatmoss only (20 L), peatmoss (10 L) + pine needle (10 L, PN), peatmoss (10 L) + rice hull (10 L, RH), and peatmoss (10 L) + sawdust (10 L, SD). The pH of organic materials was lowest in peatmoss (pH 4.3), followed by PN (pH 4.8), SD (pH 5.7) and RH (pH 7.8). Soil pH measured right after planting ranged from 5.3 to 5.9 and was lower in PM only and PM + PN than PM + RH and SD treatments. In the third year, the pH lowered to the range of 4.2 to 4.5, with PM and PM + PN still maintaining lower values. The early growth was good in the mixed treatment of PM and PN, and the plant height and width and the number of new shoots were good in the PM treatment. Soil water content was maintained highest in PM + PN, followed by PM, PM + SD and PM + RH. Vegetative growth was maintained better in PM and PM + PN, and the number of flower cluster and yield were also slightly higher in those treatments while mean fruit weight was similar among all treatments. Fruit quality indices such as total soluble solids, titratable acidity and firmness were not affected.

  • A sweet corn hybrid, Golden Cross Bantam 70, was grown at 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20kg/10a of nitrogen (N) under the transparent P. E. film mulch to find the best yield evaluation method. Culm length, ear height, number of tillers increased and silking date was earlier by 1-2 days with increased N level. Leaf area index of main culm at harvest increased with increased N level. Marketable ears were divided into two classes according to the whole sale market price; the frist grade of which husked ear weight over 150g (unhusked ear weight 230g) and the second grade of which husked ear weight between 100 and 150g (unhusked ear weight between 180 and 230g). Average length, thickness, and weight of both grades of marketable ears were not different among the N levels. The proportion of the first grade increased with increased N level. However, total number and weight of marketable ears and gross income per 10a calculated considering weight and number of ears increased with increased N level. There were highly positive correlations between gross income and ear number or ear weight per l0a. The number and weight of marketable ears were underestimated at high N levels compared with gross income. Dry matter yield of stover ranged 740-963kg/10a and increased with increased N level with 20. 8-24.5% dry matter content. Rice black-streaked dwarf virus infection rate was 11.8-15.0%, but it was not related to N level. N concentration in ear was similar but that in stover increased with increased N level. Total N uptake increased but N recovery decreased with increased N level.
