The Influences of SMEs' Market Orientation and Brand Orientation on Firm Capabilities and Performance in Export Markets (수출중소기업의 시장지향성과 브랜드지향성이 기업역량 및 수출성과에 미치는 영향)

  • This study examined the casual relationships among SMEs' market orientation, brand orientation, firm capabilities-technology and marketing capabilities, competitive advantage and financial performance in export markets based on the resource-based view. The data were collected from 286 cases of exporting SMEs. The results of path analysis indicated that market orientation of exporting SMEs increased technology and marketing capabilities. Market orientation directly increased both competitive advantage and financial performance in export markets. Brand orientation influenced technological capability and had indirect effects on both competitive advantage and financial performance through the firm capabilities. Based on the results, managerial implications and future research directions for exporting SMEs were provided.

A Study on The Effect of Management Consultant Competency on Management Performance of Client: Focusing on The Mediating Effect of Client's Consulting Receptivity (경영컨설턴트의 역량이 컨설팅 수진기업의 경영성과에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구: 수진기업 컨설팅 수용성의 매개효과를 중심으로)

  • In order to accomplish a successful management consulting project, the client's receptivity to consulting as well as the management consultant's competency is very important. Even if a consultant with a high level of competence is put into a project, if the consulting receptivity of the company is low, a successful project can not be accomplished. On the other hand, even if consulting receptivity of the company is high, management consulting performance can not be expected if management consultant competency is lacking. This study analyzes the affect of consultant competency on management performance of client firms and the mediating effect of consulting receptivity of client company in terms of management performance. Management consultant competency is measured by task-related competency, managerial competency and common competency, and management performance is measured by financial performance and non-financial performance. The parameters are measured by consulting receptivity and management consulting performance. According to the results of the study, the management consultant's competency has a positive (+) influence on both of consulting receptivity and management consulting performance. Consulting receptivity has a positive (+) influence on both of management consulting performance and non-financial performance. Management consulting performance has a positive (+) influence on both of financial performance and non-financial performance. The mediating effect is that the consulting receptivity mediates directly or indirectly between management consultant competency and financial performance via management consulting performance and non-financial performance. The results of the empirical analysis of this study can contribute to the enhancement of management performance through management consulting in viewpoints of client firms and also contributing to more efficient and effective management consulting.

The Effects of the Government Funding on Venture Firms' Management Performance: Focusing on the Mediation Effect of Firms' Internal Competencies and the Moderation Effect of Firm's Growth Stage (정부지원자금이 벤처기업의 경영성과에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구: 내부역량의 매개효과와 기업 성장단계의 상호작용효과를 중심으로)

  • As the importance of venture firms has increased as a new growth engine, the South Korea government makes various efforts to establish healthy ecosystems for ventures and start-ups. Especially in order to foster the competitiveness of venture firms, various support policies such as financial and R&D expenses are being expanded and promoted. In this study, the author analyzed the impact of government funding on venture firms' internal competencies and management performance by using the resource-based theory. Moreover, this study tested the moderation effect of firm's growth stages. Unlike previous studies, this study focused on qualitative rather than quantitative aspects of internal competencies and the financial and non-financial performance are used to measure the management performance of the ventures to examine the effects of government funding for venture firms in more details. For the purpose of verifying the hypothesis of this research, "The Research On The Precision Status Of Venture Firms" in 2017 from the Ministry of Small and Medium Business was utilized, which has been compiled since 1999. According to the results of this study, the government funding experience did not significantly affect the company's internal competencies and financial performance, but had a significant impact on the non-financial performance, which in turn seemed to have a significant effect on the financial performance. In addition, it was found that the technology, price, design, and quality competencies affected non-financial performance, while the organizational management and marketing competencies did not. However, the price, design, organizational management, and marketing competencies affected financial performance, while the technology competency was not. Finally, there were no differences in the effectiveness of government funding, depending on the growth stages.

  • The purpose of the research is to suggest the method to maximize management achievement of the sheltered workshops with analyzing the factors of organizational competencies which affect the business performance. The study was proceeded after suggesting the research model based on discussion on the business performance of Malcolm Baldrige (1987) model which assessed as the most optimized one for evaluation of the business performance of enterprise. First, the organizational competence of the sheltered workshop impact on commercial performance and noncommercial performance meaningfully. The commercial performance affects marketing competence, administrative competence, financial competence in order of mention, and noncommercial performance affects workshop cultural competence, financial competence, leader competence, human resources competence in order of mention. Second, the organizational competence of the sheltered workshop affects comprehensive business performance including commercial and noncommercial, in order of marketing competence, workshop cultural competence, financial competence, and human resource competence.

The Influences of SMEs' Utilization of Export Assistance Programs and Firm Capabilities on Export Performances : Firm Type as a Moderator (중소기업의 정부 수출지원 프로그램 활용도와 기업역량이 수출성과에 미치는 영향 : 기업유형을 조절변수로)

  • The present study examined the moderating influences of firm type(B2B, B2C) on the relationships between SMEs' utilization of government export assistance programs, firm capabilities(marketing & technology capabilities) and export performances(financial and strategic performances). The results of regression analyses on 247 B2B and 137 B2C cases showed that the positive influence of utilization of export assistance programs on financial performance was greater for B2B than for B2C SMEs. This construct, however, had no influence on strategic performance for neither B2B nor B2C cases. Further, both marketing and technology capabilities have positive influences on each of financial and strategic performances. Marketing capability, however, had a greater influence on financial performance for B2C than for B2B SMEs. Technology capability had a greater influence on financial performance for B2B than for B2C SMEs. Implications, limitations, and future studies were also discussed.

  • This study empirically analyzed the relationship between founder competency and business performance based on the premise that founder competency is the main internal resource of a company from a resource-based view, using a sample of 2,196 startups less than five years old collected and evaluated by the Korea Technology Finance Corporation during the 2016 technology evaluation. The results showed that the technological, managerial, and financial competence of founders had a positive effect on the business performance of startups, and the characteristics of founders' academic major had a moderating effect on the relationship between founder competency and business performance. Based on these findings, this study contributes to the theoretical discussion that technological, managerial, and financial competencies of founders are factors that improve business performance, and provides practical and policy implications for effective entrepreneurship education by suggesting that entrepreneurship education should be transformed and strengthened, including cross-training of founders majoring in science and engineering to foster managerial and financial competencies.

Personal Financial Management Ability of College Students -A survey of D college- (대학생의 개인재무관리역량 -대구 D대학교를 중심으로-)

  • First, the average scores of personal financial management ability in the college students' financial management attitude were 72.24 for male and 71.65 for female, so that male students showed a little higher score than female. College students who had an experience of opening a bank account and who kept a record of spending revealed higher scores. Those whose parents were elementary or middle school graduates unfolded the highest score, 73.67, and the lowest score, 63.35, from those whose parents had M.A. or Ph.D. The average scores of personal financial management ability in the college students' financial management knowledge indicated almost no difference with 63.26 for male and 63.35 for female. Only whether they had an experience of opening a bank account, keeping a record of spending, or a credit card revealed score differences. Depending on the students' majors, there were also score differences. Students from engineering department came up with the highest score, an average of 66.88, and students from art & physical education department with the lowest score, 53.39, in the financial management knowledge. The personal financial management ability in the college students' financial management function showed that the score of male students was a little higher than that of female, 64.26 versus 63.58. Students who kept a record of spending and whose parents' income was between three million won and four million won marked the highest score, an average of 65.26, and students whose parents' income was below two million won marked the lowest score, an average of 60.43, in the college students' financial management function. There were score differences in the college students' financial management function depending on the students' majors. Students from engineering department came up with the highest score, an average of 69.67, and students from public health department with the lowest score, 63.21.

  • This study empirically identified how technological innovation capability and technological commercialization capability affect management performance in the metropolitan area of Ppuri corporation. As results of the research analysis, First the average company performance in the field of new materials and platform processing technology was higher than that of the metal-oriented processing technology field. Second, technological innovation capability variables are included as R&D capability, technological innovation regime, and technological accumulation capability are shown the statistically significant on non-financial performance. Commercialization capability, producing capability, and marketing capability variable are statistically significant on financial performance.

The Effects of the High-tech Manufacturing Ventures' External Collaborations on the Management Performance: Focusing on the Mediation Effect of Internal Core Competencies (첨단제조 벤처기업의 외부적 협력활동 경험이 경영성과에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구: 내부 핵심역량의 매개효과를 중심으로)

  • As industrial structural changes in the 4th Industrial Revolution have recently led to the need for fostering high-tech industries and high-tech manufacturing industries have been showing high value-added creation, the importance of high-tech manufacturing ventures has increased a lot as well. As a result of this, the government is actively supporting and fostering them. However, it appears that high-tech manufacturing ventures seem to have a lot of difficulty in securing competitive advantages due to the lack of internal core competencies and experience in the rapidly changing international economic conditions. In order for high-tech manufacturing ventures to strengthen internal core competencies, external collaborations with other companies or institutions which have diverse experience, technology skills and abundant resources are actively promoted. Accordingly, based on resource-based theory and transaction cost theory, the authors analyzed the effects of the high-tech manufacturing ventures'external collaborations on internal core competencies and management performance in this study. In order to verify the hypothesis of this study, the 2020 data on"The Research on the Precision Status of Ventures'compiled by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups since 1999 were utilized. According to the results of this study, the experience of external collaborations had a positive impact on the internal core competencies and non-financial management performance, while there was no direct impact on financial management performance. Moreover, the relationship between the experience of external collaborations and management performance is mediated by the internal core competencies. Additionally, it was found that the internal core competencies positively affected both non-financial and financial management performances, and non-financial management performance again had a significant impact on the financial management performance. Finally, the experience of external collaborations had a positive impact on both development, manufacturing, and marketing factors forming the internal core competencies. However, the impacts of individual factors were different in the management performance. Development and marketing factors were shown to have a significant impact on both non-financial and financial management performance, while the manufacturing factor had a significant impact only on financial management performance.

An Empirical Study on the Relationship between the Capabilities and Sales Growth of Research-based Spin-off Companies (연구소기업의 역량과 매출성장 간의 관계에 관한 실증연구)

  • This study aims to analyze research-based spin-off companies, which are established in Innopolis to promote the commercialization of R&D outputs of public institutions. We analyzed 175 technology-based start-ups, which were founded before 2016, to examine how the companies' capabilities affect the sales growth rate. The results show that technological capability and entrepreneurial capability have positive relations with sales growth, while network capability and finance capability do not have significant associations. In addition, R&D intensity (R&D expenditure per employee) has moderating effects on the association between firm capabilities and sales growth rate since it strengthens the effect of technological capability and entrepreneurial capability but weakens the influence of network capability. This study contributes to widening the understanding of the importance of capabilities of research-based spin-off companies and their performance, and differs from most previous literature since it uses objective and quantitative data. It further suggests policy implications that the enhancement of technological and entrepreneurial capability are important for the stable growth of technology-based startups in the early stage.
