  • Waterjets for rocks have various advantages of the non-contact and eco-friendly excavation using only water and abrasive. To overcome the problems (e.g., dust and noise occurrence) of the conventional drilling methods, waterjet excavation methods are broadly used. It is advantageous to operate a couple of nozzles in order to increase the waterjet excavation efficiency. When multiple nozzles are used, it is essential to analyze the excavation performance and shape according to the nozzle operation method. In this study, nozzle angle, horizontal distance between nozzles, and standoff distance were defined as nozzle operating parameters and the excavation performance and shape were analyzed. As a result of the experiment, when the nozzle angle and standoff distance are increased, the excavation depth is decreased and the effective depth tends to be increased. In addition, based on the experimental results, the excavation shape criteria required for nozzle insertion were proposed and optimal nozzle operating parameters were derived according to the criteria. This study result is expected to be used as useful basic research in the future development of multiple waterjet nozzles for rock drilling.

  • This study aims to report the behavioral mechanism of steel pipe reinforcement grouting, which is being actively used to ensure the stability of the excavation surface during tunnel excavation, based on measurements taken at the actual site. After using a 12 m steel pipe attached with a shape displacement meter and a strain gauge to reinforce the actual tunnel surface, behavioral characteristics were identified by analyzing the measured deformation and stress of the steel pipe. Taking into account that the steel pipes were overlapped every 6 m, the measured data up to 7 m of excavation were used. In addition, the behavioral characteristics of the steel pipe reinforcement according to the difference in strength were also examined by applying steel pipes with different allowable stresses (SGT275 and SGT550). As a result of analyzing the behavior of steel pipes for 7 hours after the first excavation for 1 m and before proceeding with the next excavation, the stress redistribution due to the arching effect caused by the excavation relaxation load was observed. As excavation proceeded by 1 m, the excavated section exhibited the greatest deformation during excavation of 4 to 6 m due to the stress distribution of the three-dimensional relaxation load, and deformation and stress were generated in the steel pipe installed in the ground ahead of the tunnel face. As a result of comparing the behavior of SGT275 steel pipe (yield strength 275 MPa) and SGT550 steel pipe (yield strength 550 MPa), the difference in the amount of deformation was up to 18 times and the stress was up to 12 times; the stronger the steel pipe, the better it was at responding to the relaxation load. In this study, the behavior mechanism of steel pipe reinforcement grouting in response to the arching effect due to the relaxation load was identified based on the measured data during the actual tunnel excavation, and the results were reported.

  • For initial stability of the tunnel, the primary support, Shotcrete and rockbolt shall be placed in the most appropriate time. This is because the role of such support plays a vital role in long-term and short-term tunnel stability. In this study, the rock bolt is an important supporting system that receives the external pressure generated by the stress relaxation during tunnel excavation as axial force and transmits it to the shotcrete on the tunnel excavation surface. Until now, most of the materials of rock bolts have been used in the field, but there have been many problems such as uncertain quality of Chinese materials entering the market, poor packing due to falling down of rock bolts when filled with mortar, and corrosion due to water. Therefore, in this study, we have developed a high strength steel pipe rock bolt using Autobeam material to solve and improve various problems of existing rock bolts. In order to evaluate the performance of the developed bolt, field tests were carried out and the existing mortar filler in order to improve the performance of the rock bolt, the design and construction criteria were studied and the results were included in this paper.

  • NATM(New Austrian Tunnelling Method) uses a support system of shotcrete, rockbolt and steel support, which are installed after tunnel excavation. Recently, a lattice girder among these support system is used in tunnelling. A lattice girder is a new steel support developed in Europe for the replacement of an existing H-shaped steel set, which is reported to have some problems in installation. This is a triangular shape welded with steel rods and is a light-weight support system which enables fast and easy installation of porepolling. The major advantage of a lattice girder is the good bonding with shotcrete. In this study, to evaluate the applicability of a lattice girder in tunnelling in Korea, field tests were performed at a high speed railway tunnel with a large section. Also, features of lattice girder in field tests were compared with those of a H-shaped steel set respectively. Field tests proved that a lattice girder fully supported the initial earth pressure developed right after excavation and limited ground deformation effectively.

  • In the case of underground power utilities pipe such as circular pipe, the most difficult problem is low compaction efficiency of the bottom of pipe inducing the failure of utilities. To overcome this problem, various studies have been performed and one of these is CLSM (controlled low strength materials) accelerated flow ability. CLSM has already been stage of commercial use in the foreign countries led by power company. In this study, we estimated the behavior of flexible pipe with flowable backfill materials and sand to compare on the DB24 load. The results showed that the deformation of flexible pipe is affected by types of backfill materials. CLSM shows better behavior characteristics than compacting sand. But numerical and analytical results that peformed to compare to the field test results showed big gap with the field results.

  • There are substantial difficulties in assessing the volume of soill/rock to be excavated and the cost thereof, which is attributable to the subjective and qualitative methods of rock mass classification prevailing at the moment. This paper intends to introduce more objective and quantitative rock mass classification method easily applicable to the excavation of granites in Muakjae, Seoul. As a result of such study it is proven that Schmidt hammer and point load strength tests are fairly reliable and easily applicable to estimate and quantify uniaxial compressive strength of granitic material in Seoul. In an efforts to confirm the granitic rock mass conditions in 12 meters underground, seismic refraction surveys were made on the top of vertical exposures from where underlying rock mass conditions could be directly inspected. Rock mass boundaries determined by seismic refraction methods were found to agree within a 1m variance with visible differences in rock mass conditions in the vertical exposure beneath the test site. Thus it can be concluded that detailed geotechnical mapping on cutting slopes is a most efficient, dependable and cost-effective technique in assessing likely excavation conditions of shallow granitic mass in Seoul.

  • The core is extracted through drilling and used to evaluate the feasibility of developing mineral resources. To extract the core, a bit is installed in the forefront of the drilling device for drilling. Here, the drill bit receives stress due to direct friction against the ground. In addition, a bit appropriate for the given ground condition should be used due to the possibility of damaging a bit as a result of friction. This paper used a current bit model based on an impregnated bit and analyzed a new bit model that uses a stiffener of similar/disparate materials. The hardness and deflective strength were then evaluated by modeling the shape of impregnated bit through a calculation based on a theoretical formula. Through FEM analysis of the existing model and the new model, the stress and strain calculation results were optimized to minimize the stress and strain with a stress of 1.92 × 107 Pa and a strain of 9.6× 10-5 m/m.

  • Recently, the number of shallow tunnel construction increases to improve the structural safety and environment-friendliness. In Semi-Cut and Cover Method, ground is excavated to the crown arch level and braced rib arch is set to backfill before the excavation of lower face. Semi-Cut and Cover Method is proposed to solve the problems occurred by the conventional Cut and Cover Method, such as unstability, high-cost and the large cutting slope to be reinforced. In this paper, the behaviors of Braced Rib Arch in shallow tunnel excavated by semi-cut and cover method was studied. Model tests in 1:10 Scale were performed in real construction sequences. The distance between supports of rib arch was 1.8 m and the length of spacer was 1.0 m. the size of test pit was 4.0 m (width)$\times$3.3 m (length) 4.0 m (height) in dimension. Tests results show that backfill load acting on arch was smaller than that in the conventional Open-Cut Method.

  • Since a room-and-pillar underground structure is characterized by its grid-type array of room and pillar, its economical efficiency can be governed by excavation sequence. In this study, the construction period by the drill-and-blast method as a excavation method for a room-and-pillar underground structure was examined. In addition, the parallel excavation sequence was considered as the main sequence of a room-and-pillar underground structure. Sequences of mucking and support installation were derived to estimate the total excavation cycle by taking the case of a road tunnel into consideration. From the excavation cycle of room-and-pillar underground structure, the relationship between available maximum and minimum numbers of jumbo drill machines depending on the number of faces in operation was suggested.
