  • This study was performed to study characteristics of new zoysiagarass cultivar 'Green Ever' (Plant Variety Protection Application no. 2014 - 02). 'Green Ever' was developed by selection breeding among 100 native zoysiagrasses collected in South Korea. 'Green Ever' showed specific bands (1.48 kb with OPC14 and 1.05 kb with OPD5) which were distinct from 'Anyang Joonggi' or 'Dongrae Koryogi' in RAPD analysis. 'Green Ever' was classified as Z. matrella in morphological evaluations including plant height ($6.8{\pm}0.5cm$), leaf width ($2.0{\pm}0.1mm$), height of lowest leaf ($1.9{\pm}0.1cm$) and seed length ($3.0{\pm}0.1mm$), which was similar with morphological characteristics of 'Dongrae Koryogi'. Turf quality, shoot density and chlorophyll content of 'Green Ever' were higher than them of 'Anyang Joonggi' and 'Dongrae Koryogi' under intensive management such as fairway on golf course, especially shoot densities of 'Green Ever' were excellent higher than 'Anyang Joonggi' and 'Dongrae Koryogi' during experimental periods. It could be extensively used in fairway, teeing ground of golf courses and landscape garden after further study about various environmental adaptabilities such as winter kill, wear tolerance etc.

  • Five warm-season turfgrass [Zoysia japonica Steud., Stenotaphrum secundatum (Walt.) Kuntze, Buchloe dactyloides (Nutt.) Engelm., Eremochloa ophiuroides (Munro.) Hack. and Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.] were overseeded with 2 cool-season turfgrasses [Poa pratensis L. and Festuca arundinacea Schreb.] to examine suitability of these species for planting in mixture for producing a year-round turf. Percent of warm-season and cool-season turfgrasses in the mixture were estimated for 5 years. Also, to evaluate the fertilization times of the warm-season and cool-season turrfgras mixtures. Eremochloa ophiuroides and Buchloe dactyloides were not suitable for warm-season and cool-season turfgrass mixtures. However, Zoysia japonica, Stenotaphrum secundatum and Cynodon dactylon were suitable for warm-season and cool-season turfgrass mixtures. Zoysia japonica, Stenotaphrum secundatum and Cynodon dactylon were showed approximately 50% botanical composition five years after cool-season turfgrass overseeding. And, those three warm-season turfgrass mixtures showed approximately 20% visual ratings in winter period. Fertilization in early spring and late autumn had made cool-season turfgrass dominated in mixtures. Therefore, fertilization times in warm-season and cool-season turfgrass mixtures was desirable in summer period.

  • During 2008~2009 winter season, yellow patch and gray snow mold occurred on turfgrass plants in golf courses in Kangwon and Jeonbuk provinces, respectively. The fungi associated with the diseases were identified as Rhizoctonia cerealis Van der Hoeven and Typhlua incarnata Lasch ex Fr., based on the morphological characteristics of hyphae and sclerotia. R. cerealis and T. incarnata were pathogenic to most turfgrass and crop species tested. R. cerealis infected crown, stem and leaf tissue of the host plants, and the symptom was light yellow circular patch. Individual infected leaf near the margin of patch developed red color first and finally turn brown. The symptoms caused by gray snow mold pathogen are water-soaked spots, and became a watery soft rot. Infection parts became yellow and then turned brown followed by death of the whole plant. White mycelia were developed on higher petioles, leaves, and on soil where these plant parts lay, and black sclerotia of variable size and shape formed in the mycelial mass. All isolates tested were pathogenic on most turfgrass and crop plants, and significantly different in aggressiveness. Disease severity increased with longer snow cover days on target plants, suggesting that disease severity was expressed over snow cover days. There were significant differences in disease severity among the graminious species, and among cultivars within each species, indicating varying levels of susceptibility to R. cerealis and T. incarnata.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate a cause of summer depression of cool season turfgrass, using nine cultivars in warm season and twenty-eight cool season turfgrasses. Even though an average of apparent photosynthesis(APS) per fresh weight was 13.09 mg $CO_2$/g/h in warm season turfgrass and 7.75 mg $CO_2$/g/h in cool season turfgrass, the Creeping bentgrass in cool season type was higher than Kikuyugrass and Bahiagrass in warm season type. The optimum temperature for the heighest APS was $30^{\circ}C$ in warm season type and $25^{\circ}C$ in cool season type. In $CO_2$ compensation point(CCP) as an index of dark respiration, it was higher in cool season turfgrass(75.6ppm) than warm season turfgrass(29.5ppm). In warm season type, even though the temperature increased from $25^{\circ}C$ to $40^{\circ}C$ the CCP was not increased. But the higher temperature rises the more increased CCP in cool season type. Dark respiration(DR) was higher in cool season type than warm season type under various temperature conditions, but the increasing ratio of DR with the temperature increment was not so much differed between two types.

  • Research was initiated to investigate early establishment characteristics and germination pattern of tall fescue(TF, Festuca arundinacea Shreb.). Four varieties of TF were evaluated in the study. Experiment was conducted under a room temperature condition of $5^{\circ}C$ to $25^{\circ}C$(natural conditions). Daily and cumulative germination patterns were measured and analyzed on a daily basis. Significant differences were observed in germination patterns, days to the first germination, days to 50% germination, days to 75% germination, and germination percentage with different environments and varieties. Germination percentage was variable with varieties at the end of study. It was 85.25 to 97.00% under natural conditions. There were considerable variations in early germination characteristics and patterns among the entries according to different conditions. The first germination was initiated between 7 and 9 DAS(days after seeding) under natural conditions, being 2 to 3 days later as compared with ISTA conditions. It was 11 to 12 DAS in days to the 50% germination, which was 3 to 4 days after the first germination. Days to the 75% germination were 12.38 to 14.29 DAS, being 1.55 to 4.77 days slower as compared with ISTA conditions. Olympic Gold was regarded as the fastest variety and Tar Heel II was slowest. Data from this study demonstrated that information on differences in germination characteristics and patterns among varieties would be usefully applied for TF establishment such as golf course construction.

  • This study was carried out to develope new zoysiagrass cultivars 'JangsungChorok' (Application No. :2013-3) and 'JangsungSaetbyeol' (Application No. :2013-4). One hundred and one genetic resources were collected at Jangsung Gun area from 2010 to 2011. Among the collected lines, CY6097 (JangsungChorok) and CY6069 (JangsungSaetbyeol) showed superior performance in spring green up and growth rate. 'JangsungChorok' showed genetically light green leaf color, with medium leaf width (4.4 mm), height from ground to first leaf blade of 3.2 cm and average plant height of 18 cm. Fast recovery rate and early spring green up rate will make this cultivar (JangsungChorok) for efficient sod producer. 'JangsungSaetbyeol' showed genetically dark green leaf color, with fine to medium leaf width of 3.5 mm, height from ground to first leaf blade of 4.3 cm and average plant height of 22.6 cm. Fast recovery rate and early spring green up rate with relatively narrow leaf will make this cultivar (JangsungSaetbyeol) for high sod quality.

  • This study was initiated to evaluate the growth characteristics of seven creeping bentgrass cultivars in summer, 'Penncross' showed the worst visual quality, whereas 'Penn A-4' and 'Crenshaw' the best quality. 'Putter', which was maintained a fair quality during the test period, was regarded as a good cultivar because of no significant variation in summer as compared to the other caltivars. 'Crenshaw',' L-93' and 'Penn A-4' were greater in chlorophyll content and 'Penncross' lowest during the summer. Also, 'SR1020' had a low content of chlorophyll. 'Putter' greatly increased in chlorophyll content after fertilization. The highest shoot density($19.3/cm^2$) was found with 'L-93' in early August, followed by 'Crenshaw', 'Penn A-4', 'Putter', 'Dominant', and 'SR1020' in that order. However, 'Penncross' was lowest($15.7/cm^2$). As for a root length, 'L-93' was longest, being over an average 5.5cm. 'Penn A-4' and 'Putter' also showed good result in root growth. However, the root length considerably decreased with 'SR1020', 'Penncross' and 'Dominant' in summer. Brown patch was a serious disease for the most cultivars, except 'Penncross'. 'Dominant' had the most serious damage. 'Putter', 'L-93', 'Crenshaw', 'SR1020', and 'Penn A-4' were also greater in damage over the others. In regards of algae occurrence in summer, 'Penn A-4' had the least damage, while 'Dominant' the greatest. In conclusion, 'Crenshaw', 'Penn A-4' and 'L-93' were the best cultivars in terms of summer growth. Conversely, 'Penncross' was the poorest one. However, this study was conducted under the conditions of one-year old green. Accordingly, in-depth experiment should be done over several years to elucidate the characteristics of growth for the wide range of creeping bentgrass cultivars during the summer.

  • This study was conducted to compare cold tolerances and growth rates of 5 basic species, commercial lines, and breeding lines of zoysiagrass. Total 41 zoysiagrasses were tested at the northern part (Jeokseong-myeon) and the middle part (Cheonan) of South Korea. Cold tolerance (survival rate during winter), growth rate, green-up speed, and density data were collected visually. Four types of zoysiagrasses (Z. matrella, Z. tenuifolia, USm, and S4M2) with genetic characteristics of Z. matrella died during winter cold, while the others survived. Midium leaf type zoysiagrasses, such as Anyang1, Samdeock1, Anyang2, SJ21, and Pyeongdong, with genetic characteristics of both Z. sinica and Z. macrostachya showed vigorous growth rate one year after planting at the northern part (Jeokseong-myeon). Twenty nine ($70.7\%$) zoysiagrasses showed vigorous growth rate, but the other twelve ($29.3\%$) zoysiagrasses died by cold and drought condition at the middle (Cheonan) part of S. Korea. Anyang2, AJ9-7, Samdeock1, Samdeock2, Samdeock3, and Zenith-C showed vigorous growth rate even though cold and drought environmental condition were artificially provided at these region. But, SJ2-19, NSm, 88Mey, 88Mey-7S, 88Mey-9S, SJ2l-10, ASm, and DBm which did not die at the northern part, showed serious injury at the middle part of S. korea. From this results, we can conclude that drought is as important factor as low temperature for zoysiagrasses during winter.
