  • This study was conducted to select the cover crops in organic apple orchard by estimating the coverage of each cover crops and time-periodic weed occurrence. Seeding of Festuca myuros and Trifolium repens showed high contents of soil organic matter and phosphorus as compared with control. Seeding of Trifolium sp., Hordeum vulgare and Secale cereal reduced relatively occurrence of weed in May and S. cereal among others showed the greatest effect in June. In July, seeding F. arundinaceae and Poa pratensis showed low coverage and a lot of weeds occurred in their field. Fifty one species were occurred as weeds and it needs to removal of high and broadleaf weeds such as Chenopodium ficifolium, C. album var. centrorubru and Humulus japonicus in spring to increase the rate of ground cover. P. pratensis having the lowest cover rate showed the similar dry weight of weeds as compared with control. Trifolium sp. and Persicaria hydropiper had a high correlation with contents of soil organic matter and C. album var. centrorubru had a correlation with contents of soil phosphorus by CCA analysis.

  • This study was conducted to find the levels of reduction in rice yield and to determine economic threshold levels as affected by densities of Scirpus planiculmis and Lindernia dubia in wet seeding rice cultivation. In wet seeding rice cultivation, yield of rice in densities of S. planiculmis (192 per $m^2$) and L. dubia (384 per $m^2$) was reduced by 43 and 22%, respectively. Relationship between rice yield and densities of weeds were predicted with these equations of Y=531.3kg/(1+0.003931x), $r^2$=0.964 for S. planiculmis and Y=547.0kg/(1+0.000792x), $r^2$=0.922 for L. dubia. According to Cousens' method, economic threshold densities of S. planiculmis and L. dubia were calculated by 7.2 and 34.9 per $m^2$, respectively. This result indicated that yield of rice in wet seeding rice cultivation could be reduced by over economic threshold densities of S. planiculmis and L. dubia.

  • The purpose of this study is to observe the growth habit and investigate a possibility of cultivating the GM rice (CaMsrB2-8) as a rice cultivar having drought resistance. Germination viability test showed that there was no significant difference between the drought-resistant GM(CaMsrB2-8) and non-GM (Ilmi) rice which was the parent variety at the GM rice. All the seeds of CaMsrB2-8 and Ilmi germinated after 6 days. Viviparous germination was not found in CaMsrB2-8 and Ilmi that was grown in greenhouse at $23{\pm}2^{\circ}C$ with water spraying for 40 days. Ratooning of CaMsrB2-8 and Ilmi was observed in 7-14 days and found uniform in field condition. CaMsrB2-8 seemed to grow faster than Ilmi. But CaMsrB2-8 and Ilmi were similar in 14-21 days. Both CaMsrB2-8 and Ilmi showed low seed shattering and more than 90% grains were ripened. All the seeds scattered in the paddy soil surface were not germinated after passing the winter. This study suggests that the drought-resistant GM rice was not significantly different with the parent variety of Ilmi in many agronomic characteristics such as wildness traits.

  • With increasing LM soybean import, the concern about unintentional gene flow from LM soybean to wild soybean and consequential weedy risk has been growing. Therefore, we conducted this study to characterize seed traits including germination of hybrids resulted from gene flow from LM soybean to wild soybean in comparison with their parents, LM soybean and wild soybean. Pollen-donor LM soybean seeds were much greater and heavier (about 15.0 g of 100 seed weight) than F2 hybrid (5.7 g), while pollen-recipient wild soybean and F1 hybrid seeds were smallest and lightest (about 2.5 g). F2 hybrid was brown, intermediate between yellow LM soybean seed and black wild soybean seed. These findings indicate that F1 hybrid seeds show similar characteristics with wild soybean, while F2 hybrid seeds show intermediate color and size between two parents. F2 hybrid seed showed intermediate traits between two parents in germination and dormancy rates, which were 35% and 65%, respectively. LM soybean showed no dormancy, while wild soybean showed greater than 90% dormancy. This finding indicates that F2 hybrid show intermediate characteristics in seed germination with high dormancy trait, suggesting a potential weediness of hybrids resulted from gene flow from LM soybean to wild soybean.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the ecology of weed occurrence and to establish an economical paddy field weed control system for direct-seeded rice on water. The main problem weed among annual and perennial weeds was Eleocharis kuroguwai. The control effect of E. kuroguwai was low by the application of azimsulfuron + carfentrazone-ethyl + pyriminobac-methyl at the early stages of rice in directly seeded paddy fields, but most annual weeds including Echinochloa crus-galli were controlled. Also, the additional application of pyrazosulfuron-ethyl + thiobencarb GR at 20 days after first treatment or of bentazone SL at 43 days after the first treatment effectively controlled E. kuroguwai. Tuber formation of E. kuroguwai was inhibited by the additional application of pyrazosulfuron-ethyl + thiobencarb by 84%, but the dormancy rate of old tubers of E. kuroguwai under the soil was higher than that of E. kuroguwai tubers following single application of azimsulfuron + carfentrazone-ethyl + pyriminobac-methyl at the early stages of rice. Tuber formation was inhibited by the additional application of bentazone by approximately 87%, and the old tuber dormancy rate was low in the bentazone treatment. High amounts of old dormant tubers of E. kuroguwai were found in the weedy plots.

  • There is a continuous rise in the commercialization of living modified (LM) organisms worldwide. While LM plants have not yet been cultivated in South Korea, research, development, import of products, and registration of related research facilities are progressing. LM plants should be tested in greenhouses and fields during development. Furthermore, environmental risk assessment and safety management should be performed before their release into the environment. Research on LM plant development is conducted in laboratories as well as confined greenhouses and fields. Safety management regulations are provided as combination standards for the LMO Act in each research district. The accidental release of the LM petunia in Japan was a significant incident related to LM plant research. It implies that normal plants within the distance of crossing should be regarded as LM plants. In the United States, LM creeping bentgrass was released into the environment, thus necessitating the establishment of stringent measures to prevent the scattering of LM plant seeds by wind or other mediums. In South Korea, LM Zoysia and LM cotton were released through rainwater. Therefore, safety measures that prevent LM seed mixing and plant vegetative propagules escaping into the environment via rainwater must be established. Preventing the dispersal of unapproved LM plants requires significant time, expenditure, and effort. Researchers should first identify the impact of LM plants on the ecosystem, and steps to avert their environmental release must be implemented.

  • By use of three paddy rice lines as the near-isogenic in plant type (Broom, Open, and Spread type in tillering angle), the interspecific competition patterns of rice plants with three important weed species (Cyperus serotinus, Eleocharis kuroguwai, and Potamogeton distinctus) under the three densities of weed standing (0.25 and 50 percent of the rice plants), were observed. Under the experimented conditions, paddy yields were varied more significantly with weed competition descriptions than with plant types of paddy rice. And spread typed rice was more competitive to the detected weed species, however, the broom and spread typed rice were to Potamogeton SP, among others. The result of the clustering analysis of crop-weed competition patterns, estimated by 1-Q mode correlation coefficients, indicated that the first-order component affecting the competition patterns of crop-weed was rather the plant types of rice than either weed species or weed standing densities.

  • Weed control using cover crops has advantages of agricultural and environmental aspects which prevent soil erosion, nitrogen supply, improving soil physical properties, reduction of nitrate leaching, organic supply and control of weed occurrence. In this study, we evaluated the inhibitory effects of cover crops on the weed occurrence, growth and yield of soybean in cover crop-soybean cropping system. The treatments were consisted of 4 different mulching system such as crimson clover (Trifolium incarnatum) residue, hairy vetch (Vicia villosa) residue, rye (Secale cereale) residue and Polyethylene plastic(P.E.) mulch with no mulch treatment (control). Three cover crops were grown throughout the winter and were cut in next spring. And then 13 days old soybean seedlings were transplanted in each treatment field on $4^{th}$ June. Crimson clover, hairy vetch and rye mulch treatments reduced weeds density compared to control (73.0%, 98.0% and 85.3% respectively), on $26^{th}$ May. However, weed inhibition rate of crimson clover mulch treatment was sharply decreased to 4.17% on $6^{th}$ August, while hairy vetch and rye mulch treatments were continued high weed inhibition rate with 87.6% and 72.0% respectively. There was no inhibition effect of perennial, winter annual and broadleaf weeds inhibition in crimson clover mulch treatment. Height of soybean in crimson clover, hairy vetch and P.E. mulch treatment was 6.9%, 20.2% and 22.0% higher than that of control. But height of soybean in rye mulch treatment was lower than control on $13^{th}$ July. At harvesting, yields of soybean were in order of hairy vetch mulch treatment${\fallingdotseq}$ P.E. mulch treatment > crimson clover mulch treatment ${\fallingdotseq}$ rye mulch treatment > control.

  • The initial growth and herbicidal responses of Scirpus planiculmis were examined under both laboratory and greenhouse condition. Initial growth of S. planiculmis at two different soils(soil A and B), was compared with the growth at normal paddy soil, and growth rates at two soils were 32% and 86% as compared to the growth rates at normal paddy soil. Two different soils were soil A(rice-uncultivable) and soil B(rice-cultivable). Transplanted(2.5 leaf stage) and direct seeded rice(Dongjinbyeo) could not grow at soil A. The growth of transplanted rice at soil B was almost same as the growth at normal paddy soil, but the growth of direct seeded rice was 50% of the growth at normal paddy soil. S. planiculmis among the perennial weeds was most tolerant to NaCl, and Cyperus serotinus, Eleocharis kuroguwai, Sagittaria pygmaea, Sagittaria trifolia, Potamogeton distinctus were followed. The intial growth rate of S. planiculmis was more rapid than C. serotinus. Cutting types and times of corm reduced 20-40% of the initial growth of S. planiculmis. During the initial growth of S. planiculmis, the growth of S. planiculmis was severly inhibited by the earlier removal of corm from seedlings, and it represents that the corm plays an important role in the initial growth of this species. Bentazone among 14 commercialized herbicides showed the best safety on direct seeded rice and the highest control effect agaist S. planiculmis.
