  • Soil testing laboratories unfamiliar with turfgrasses will often overestimate the plant's need for phosphorus and underestimate the need for potassium. This is partly due to differences in rooting between grasses and many garden plants and crops. The grasses are generally more efficient in extracting phosphorus from the soil, reducing their need for phosphorus fertilizer. The fact that crop yield is often the primary objective in field crop production, and is usually of little interest in turfgrass management, may affect soil test interpretation for potassium. Potassium levels above those required for maximum tissue yield of grasses may improve stress tolerance and turfgrasses will usually benefit from higher applications of this element. There are also diffrrences in soil testing philosophies. Some laboratories use the sufficiency level of available nutrients(SLAN) approach, whereas others prefer the basic cation saturation ratio(BCSR) approach. Some will use a combination of the two methods. The use of the BCSR theory easily lends itself to abuse and questionable fertilizer applications and products are sometimes recommended citing imbalances in cation ratios. The usefulness of the BCSR ratio theory of soil testing varies with soil texture and interpretations on tests performed on sand-based media are particularly a problem. Other soil testing problems occur when sand-based media used on sports fields and golf greens contain free calcium carbonate. The ammonium acetate extractant at pH 7.0 dissolves excessive amounts of calcium that can bias cation exchange capacity measurements and measurements of cation ratios. Adjusting the pH of the extractant to 8.1 can improve the accuracy of the testing procedure for calcareous media.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the growth of Korean lawn grass (Zoysia japonica Steud.), penncross bentgrass (Agrostis palustris Huda) and seaside bentgrass (Agrostis spp.) under application of 21 pre- and post-emergence herbicides and the weeding effect of 14 annual and 4 perennial weeds with them for the purpose of the systematic chemical weed control in turf. The results obtained were as follows; 1. Napropamide, napropamide + triclopyr and benefin were safe for Korean lawn grass and two kinds of bentgrasses when they were treated at 4 and 25 days after transplanting of turfgrasses. Simazine, lenacil and bentazon inhibited the growth of bentgrasses, but not Korean lawn grass. 2. The preemergence application of simazine, benefin and napropamide + simazine showed excellent control for Digitaria sanguinalis, Cyperus amuricus, Chenopodium album, Portulaca oleracea and Centipeda minima. Lenacil was excellent for control of all the tested weeds except Chenopodium album, napropamide excellent for them except Cyperus amuricus and Portulaca oleraces, and bentazon good for them except Digitaria sanguinalis. When simazine was treated with either napropamide or triclopyr at preemergence of weeds, weeding effect increased without inhibition of lawn growth. 3. The postemergence application of mecoprop, bentazon, benefin + dicamba and benefin + mecoprop was safe to bentgrasses. All the tested postemergence herbicides except simazine + atrazine did not inhibit the growth of Korean lawn grass. 4. Other postemergence herbicides mecoprop and triclopyr were excellent for the control of Echinochloa crusgalli and those except benefin and mecoprop excellent for Kummerovia striata. Digitaria sanguinalis was controlled by treating with all the tested post emergence herbicides and Cyperus amuricus controlled only by bentazon. 5. The growth rates of bentgrasses treated with simazine, lenacil and napropamide + simazine were lower than that of hand-weeded check, and those of benefin, bentazon, napropamide, napropamide + triclopyr, stomp, bensulide and triclopyr were higher than that one when applied at spring season. Korean lawn grass growth appeared to be good under application of all the tested preemergence herbicides at spring. Lanacil and bentazone showed poor control of Echinochloa crusgalli, and bensulide showed poor control of Erigeron canadensis. Also, napropamide and bentazon were not good for Kummerovia striata control. However, at the respective rates of all the tested herbicides, these three weeds were greatly controlled by 85-100% of weeding effect. 6. At the application of autumn season, bentazon, napropamide, pendimethalin, benefin, napropamide + triclopyr, bensulide and triclopyr seemed to be safe against three kinds of turfgrasses. But simazine, napropamide + simazine inhibited the growth of bentgrasses except Korean lawn grass. In terms of weed control performance, triclopyr was poor for controlling Echinochloa crusgalli and bentazon and stomp for Poa annua, napropamide, benefin and bensulide for Stellaria medico. Stellaria uliginosa and Cerastium caespitosum were well controlled by all the tested preemergence herbicides. 7. Korean lawn grass was safe when paraquat and glyphosate were treated at the dormanant season of turfgrass. These herbicides showed excellent controll of Poa annua but poor control of perennials in order of Trifolium repens < Miscanthus sinensis < Calystegia japonica < Artemisia asiatica. 8. In field test, all of 19 herbicides seemed to be safe when treated at Korean lawn grass. All of 10 preemergence herbicides were excellent for controlling annual weeds, but poor for perennial ones. All of 9 postemergence herbicides showed a excellent control for broad-leaf weeds.

  • This study is aimed to redesign established parks and to propose a series of devices protecting them from vandalism. To solve the problems, we ascertained the damaged areas of the park greens. The trace analysis was performed to grasp the transverse inside the parks of Jeonju and Iksan in Collabuldo. Then, we presented the basic plan for minimizing park damage and for remodeling the system of movement. The results of the study are summarized as follows: it is identified that the transverse phenomenon is considerably wide-spread in majority of parks, and has no relationship to the park area or the green area. It is considered that the $\ulcorner$Condition rating class$\lrcorner$ of grass damage, which is grade 6, is extraordinarily high and the damage is accumulated considerably. Also, the damage part of other grade is discovered equally, and when unattended, the acceleration of damage is positive. A damage width a 0.5∼1.5m makes up the greater part of 79.6%. It also constitutes most of a rectilinear form. The difference in the height between the original point and destination point is below 0.7m, which is above 70%. It is identified that the interrelationship between the damage continuation length and plan distance is relatively high by the simple regression: analysis and by Pearson' correlation analysis. In spite of the normal damage continuation length is 20m, the frequency degree is downward with extreme point at 10m. Accordingly, it is assumed that park users have physical and psychological pressure when they cross the lawn field. Damage types are classified as the Simple cut cross type, the Behavioral facilitates type, Access advantage type and the Strolling type through type classification. It is considered that this classification is effective when identifying short pass type on lawn field according to the damage length and intensity.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the growth responses of zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonica Steud.) as affected by prohexadione-calcium foliar application for the effective labour saving and cost down management in the lawn yard, field and golf course etc. The leaf growth of zoysiagrass treated with prohexadione-calcium one day after mowing was significantly slow compared to the untreated plot. And the effect was continued up to 50 days. The growth inhibition rate at the treated plot was 46 to 50% compared to untreated plot and the leaf widths treated with prohexadione-calcium were narrower than control plot. The change of leaf dry weight 10 days after prohexadione-calcium treated was significantly shown less speedy than untrated plot and the results were continued up to 40 days after application. The SPAD values of the leaf colour were increased in the treated plots and continued for 40 days more.

  • In this study, the variations of the carbon dioxide fluxes were investigated with soil temperatures in the grassplot and seasonal variations of carbon dioxide concentrations and fluxes were analysed. Soil temperatures, carbon dioxide concentrations and fluxes were measured on the grassplot in Pukyong National University. Field measurements were carried out 25 times from March in 2010 to March in 2011 with nine points on the grassplot. Seasonal variations of carbon dioxide concentrations and fluxes showed an inverse relation. In summer, carbon dioxide concentrations are lower and carbon dioxide fluxes are higher. In winter, carbon dioxide concentrations are higher and carbon dioxide fluxes are lower. On the grassplot, carbon dioxide emission rate increase when the soil temperature is more than $20^{\circ}C$ and the emission rate decrease when the soil temperatures are less than $10^{\circ}C$. When the accumulated rainfall for five days before measurement day is 20~100 mm, it is showed that the more rainfall, the more carbon dioxide emissions. Carbon dioxide emission rate from the grassplot to the upper atmosphere was increased or decreased by the factors such as soil temperature, growth and wither of grass and rainfall. The results of this study showed that the emission of carbon dioxide in the grassplot is dominantly controlled by seasonal factors (especially soil temperature and rainfall).

  • This study investigated the characteristics of variations in carbon dioxide concentration and air temperature with the vertical change of surface in a grassplot. Field observations were carried out at a grassplot in Gyeongnam Science High School, over four days in August and November, 2015. Continuous observation equipment (GMP343, VAISALA) was installed at the LP (0.1 m from the surface) and UP (1.1 m from the surface) points, and the carbon dioxide concentration and air temperature were measured simultaneously at 1-min intervals. To summarize the results of the observation, August had higher than average concentrations of carbon dioxide, while November showed average air temperatures. Moreover, the concentration of carbon dioxide was higher at the UP point, while the air temperature was higher at the LP point. The correlation coefficient of carbon dioxide concentration between the UP and LP points was 0.80 in August across all the four days, while it was higher in November at 0.58-0.95. The results of the regression analysis of carbon dioxide concentration with air temperature changes for both August and November showed a distinct change at the LP point (R2=0.36-0.76), as compared to the UP point (R2=0.1-0.57). Between the UP and LP points, the carbon dioxide concentration and air temperature regression analysis results indicated that an active exchange was taking place between the two points.

  • Although urban soils must be well understood in order to ensure their conservation and optimum use, these intensively managed and disturbed soils have not been extensively investigated up to now. Urban soils from forest, lawn, streetside, and bare ground and under pavement in Inchon had high bulk density as a result of widespread trampling-induced soil compaction. The various urban soils including forests showed lower water content and higher temperature as compared with rural forest soil. Chemically, soils from urban areas had an unusual neutral pH and low organic matter content. Total bacterial numbers in urban soils was only 5∼50% of that in the rural forest soil. An analysis of stepwise multiple regression revealed that soil organic matter was the most important predictor variable on total bacterial number. The dehydrogenase activity of most urban soils was not significantly different from that of rural forest soil, whereas the microbial activity of soils under pavement was lower. Our investigations show that inadequate organic matter of highly compacted soils has adversely affected the abundance of microorganisms involving nutrient cycling in urban soils.

  • This paper presents an SAR-data calibration technique using a well-calibrated scatterometer. At first a fully-polarimetric antenna pattern(magnitude and phase) of the antenna main-beam using a conducting sphere was measured. Then, this data were used to calibrate polarimetrically an auto-mounted network analyzer-based scatterometer system. This scatterometer system can be used to measure the accurate Mueller matrices of earth surfaces such as grass fields, rice fields and bare soil surfaces; i.e., the phase-difference parameters can be obtained as well as the radar scattering coefficients. If a polarimetrically calibrated scatterometer is operated at the same time with the SAR system, the scatterometer data can be used to correct the SAR data, especially the phase-difference parameters. It was found that the correction effect is remarkable for the degree of correlation ${\alpha}$, which is one of the phase-difference parameter, while the correction effect is negligible for the magnitude parameters(backscattering coefficients).
