  • It is generally reported that field learning and a class using regional materials motivate learning and give a positive effect on learning of geology unit, science subject. The purpose of this study is to develop and to suggest regional materials for learning of geology unit, science subject at Jaeundo. The results of this study are as follows. Regional materials were developed at three locations (namjin dockyard area, yangsan beach area and dunjang beach area) of the study area. Namjin dockyard area (A site) is composed of terrain of sea cliff, sand beach and mud flat. Sedimentary rocks, weathering phenomenon of rocks and strata of various shape are distributed in sea cliff of A site. Yangsan beach area (B site) is composed of coastal terrain as sea cliff and sand beach about 1.5km long. Sedimentary rocks and rhyolite are distributed in sea cliff of B site. Tafoni formed by weathering process of rocks are developed on sedimentary rock outcrop of B site. Dunjang beach area (C site) is composed of coastal terrain of sea cliff, sand beach about 2km long and sea stack. Stratified sedimentary rocks are distributed in sea cliff of C site. Sea stack located in near halmi island on the west side of dunjang beach area is a good sample showing erosion process of sea cave for a long time. Unique geomorphology and geology phenomena distributed in 3 sites at Jaeundo can be used as regional materials for learning of geology unit, science subject. And, Regional materials shall be used in conjunction with the text book data of geology units. These 3 sites of the study area are worth using as field learning course for elementary and middle school students.

  • Separation process of heavy minerals was performed with sand from Dunjang beach of Jaeundo, Shinangun, Chonnam, and the feasibility study separating heavy minerals was carried out, and their properties were studied. Samples were selected in three parts, which were upper part, middle part and lower part, with depth. Samples of heavy mineral groups separated with the spiral separator were chosen as starting materials, and they were separated with 3 times of table separation. Heavy minerals presenting in this area were ilmenite, zircon, rutile, anatase, monazite, and xenotime. In the results of 3 times of table separation, minor content of quartz, orthoclase, albite and muscovite were existed as gangue minerals. Accordingly, we concluded that additional specific gravity separation was needed. In the results of separation of heavy minerals by hand picking, it was confirmed that heavy minerals had various genesis because of their various roundness and color.

  • The Fe-REE deposit of the Hongcheon-Jaeun district occurs in Precambrian gneiss, and is classified into two ore bodies: the Jaeun ore body (northern ore body) and the Hongcheon ore body (southern ore body). Ecomonically important minerals consist of magnetite, monazite, strontianite and barite. Based on mineral assemblages and textures, the mineralization can be classified into two stages (Na-carbonatite stage and Fe-carbonatite stage). Main REE minerals were precipitated during the Fe-carbonatite stage. Some evidences of the carbonatite origin include: 1) strontianite-monazite exolution texture, 2) strontianite-barite exolution texture, 3) the occurrence of acmite of igneous origin at the area with abundant rare earth minerals, 4) the occurrence of the mineral assemblage consisting of carbonate minerals + magnetite + REE minerals. Therefore, we suggest that Fe-REE mineralization in the study area was related to carbonatite of igneous origin.

  • Structural changes of hydrous titania by heat-treatment was investigated with XRD, TEM, FT-IR, Rarnan spectral analyses. The hydrous titania was derived from a mixed solution of titanium tetrachloride and hydrogen peroxide at $30^{\circ}C$ and pH of 9.0. The precipitate was an anatase form of titania with less-developed crystalline structure. With increasing annealing temperature ranglng up to $700^{\circ}C$, the crystallinity of anatase increased, and the particles were grown at high temperature. The rutile form of titania was developed from the anatase at $700^{\circ}C$.

  • The separation of rare earths minerals is very difficult because of their similar chemical properties. The rare earth minerals are used as the mixed rare earth minerals or the misch metal without separation to each element. However, the high purity rare earths are recently produced commercially to each element so they there are used as the materials for high tech. Based on the characterization results for the raw minerals, we have developed a combined process containing gravity seperation, magnetic seperation and flotation. The result obtained from this study is monazite concentration of TREO grade 69.11% and Recovery 56.02%.

  • The variations of the mold compression strength were studied by varing the contents of the silicon powder and water glass, silion purities, and molecule rates of the water glass, when domestic JA EUN DO sand is mixed with water glass (sodium silicate) and metallic silicon or ferro - silicon powder by the self - hardening N - PROCESS method. The results obtained from this experiment are as follows; 1) The compression strength of the mold used with metalic powder was higher and more stable than to be used ferro - silicon powder. 2) 6% water glass of 2.8 molecule rate and 1.5% of ferro - silicon of 75% purity for the N - PROCESS used with JA EUN DO sand was suitable mixing rate. 3) The compression strength increased with self - hardening time, and the PH values of the mixture of silicon powder and water glass did not change after 2 hours, but the compression strength increased steadily due to the reaction of remained silicon. 4) It is recommended to take 24 hours for self - hardening time at least.
