Ego-resilience and Emotional Intelligence, Stress Coping Strategies & Nursing Student's Adjustment to College (간호대학생의 자아탄력성, 감성지능, 스트레스 대처방식과 대학 생활 적응)

  • This study was done to identify the influence of ego-resilience, emotional intelligence and stress coping strategies on college adjustment in nursing students. The subjects consisted of 158 freshmen & sophomores attending three nursing colleges. The data were collected from October 27 to November 7, 2014, using self-report questionnaires. The data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation and multiple regression with SPSS/WIN 21.0 program. A positive correlation was found for college adjustment with ego-resilience, emotional intelligence, stress coping strategies. In addition emotional intelligence, ego-resilience, school record, satisfaction with nursing major, personal relations, gender accounted for 53.9% of variance in college adjustment. The strongest predictor of college adjustment was emotional intelligence. The findings suggest that development of emotional intelligence and ego-resilience in nursing students is important to college adjustment. It is necessary to develop systematic management of the program to integrate the educational curriculum and extra-curricular activities.

Convergent Effects of Subjective Health Status on Life Satisfaction of the Elderly Women Living Alone -The Mediating Effects of Social Participation and Self-Esteem- (독거여성 노인의 주관적 건강 상태가 생활 만족에 미치는 융복합 영향 -사회참여와 자아존중감의 매개효과-)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine mediating effects of social participation and self-esteem on the relationship between subjective health status and life satisfaction in elderly women living alone. To data were analyzed by hierarchical multiple regression analysis as suggested by Baron and Kenny(1986) using SPSS/WIN 21.0. As a results, subjective health status of the elderly women living alone had a positive influence on the social participation, self-esteem, life satisfaction. There was a partial mediating effect of the Social Participation and self-esteem in the relationship. Based on the research result, it is necessary to conduct programs suitable for each elderly Women person's health condition, and integrated social participation support program should be provided.

  • This study examines the mediating effects of self-efficacy between self-differentiation and depression by analyzing 105 parents who have at least one child with a disability. Regression analysis confirmed all hypothesis between self-differentiation, self-efficacy, and depression. There exists partially or complete mediation. That is the indirect effect on depression, self-efficacy explains the relationships between self-differentiation and depression to be as minimum as 24 percent to as maximum as 100 percent. This demonstrates that the self-efficacy significantly affects the relationship between self-differentiation and depression. Findings of this study recommend that self-efficacy should be enhanced through improving the level of self-differentiation. The results also imply that rehabilitation counselors need to understand the way of improving self-efficacy as well as the fact that the influencing factors of self-differentiation on self-efficacy is important. The findings of this study are informative for researchers, educators, and clinicians for mental health and psychological rehabilitation who assist the parents of children with disabilities.

Effects of Participating Self-Growth Program on Ego-Integrity and Family Relationship Satisfaction of the Elderly Women (자기성장 프로그램 참여가 노년기 여성의 자아통합감과 가족관계만족도에 미치는 효과)

  • The objective of this study was to test the effects of participating self-growth program on ego-integrity and family relationship satisfaction of the elderly women. The subjects were 15 elderly women of low education. The levels of ego-integrity, including life attitudes, wisdom toward life, acceptance of life, and acceptance of death, and family relation satisfaction were measured before and after completing the program sessions. The program of eight sessions was conducted twice a week, for two hours. A significant difference in ego integrity, relation satisfaction with children, and relation satisfaction with grandchildren was found between pre- and post-test scores. The results show that elderly women can benefit from programs enhancing ego integrity and relation satisfaction with offspring. This study can be utilized in the Healthy Family Support Centers or the elderly welfare program for improvement of ego-integrity and parent-child relationship satisfaction of the elderly.

Effects of Logotherapy with Exercise on Meaning of Life, Ego Integrity and IADL in the Elderly (운동을 병행한 의미요법이 노인의 생의 의미, 자아통합감 및 일상활동 수행에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of 'Logotherapy with Exercise' on the meaning of life, ego integrity and IADL's in the Elderly. Method: This quasi-experimental study was designed for a nonequivalent control group repeated measurement study. This study was done from Oct. 13, 2004 to Dec. 18. 2004. The subjects were between the ages of 65 to 75, who were literate in Korean and able to communicate and participate in physical exercise without any discomfort. The experimental group was 25 subjects and the control group was 26. The 5-week 'Logotherapy with Exercise' program was given to the experimental group. Data was analyzed by X$^2$, t-test, ANCOVA, ANOVA, and post-hoc comparison by Bonferroni correction with the SPSS/WIN 12.0. Results: The experimental group had a greater difference in meaning of life, ego integrity and IADL's than the control group. The experimental group had differences in changes in meaning of life, ego integrity and IADL's during time period. Conclusion: 'Logotherapy with Exercise' can be recommended as an effective nursing intervention for the elderly.

The Influencing Factors on the Ego Integrity of Elderly Living Alone (독거노인의 자아통합감에 미치는 영향요인)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted in order to determine the extent of ego integrity and to confirm the association between the sense of ego integrity and integrated loneliness, social support, and social activities. Methods: For this study, 146 elderly people participated. The data was analyzed with SPSS/WIN 21.0, using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, correlation analysis, and hierarchical regression analysis. Results: In regards to differences between ego integrity according to general characteristics of subjects, there was a statistically significant difference in education (F=4.13, p=.007). In elderly living alone, ego integrity was significantly positive correlated with social support and social activities, but negative correlated with loneliness. These variables explained 43.2% of the sense of ego integrity. Conclusion: The study suggested that nursing programs and social activity programs designed to aid the elderly living alone must focus on reducing loneliness, as well as increasing social support and social activities, while taking education into consideration. Also, these programs should strive to build social support systems.

  • The main purpose of this research is to analyze the variety of self-integration in accordance with the age of the elderly citizens and to verify the interactive effects of age groups and demographical characteristics on self-integration. For the purpose of this research, group of 603 elderly people who reside in Busan and are aged more than 65 were selected as participants. In this research, the elderly citizens were categorized into three age groups namely 65-74, 75-84, and above 85 years. From the results of the research we found out the following results: There were differences in self-integration across the various age groups; the age groups and the level of education had interactive effects on each other; there were differences in self-integration according to the level of education, marital status, type of co-living with children, economic status, and health status. The research showed significance in analyzing, positively the fact that public services which are designed for elder citizens need to be provided discriminatively and they should be suited for the various age groups.

Effects of Group Reminiscence with Mugwort Fragrance Inhalation on Pain, Depression and Ego Integrity of the Elderly with Chronic Pain (쑥향기 흡입을 병행한 집단회상요법이 노인의 통증, 우울 및 자아통합감에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: This study was to test some effects on pain, depression and ego integrity of the elderly by adapting group reminiscence therapy with mugwort fragrance to the elderly with chronic pain. Method: The research was executed from April 2001 through September 2001, and research participants were male and female olderly people randomly assigned from 3 environmentally similar day care centers. They were divided into experimental group A and B, and a control group; The control group was divided into a daily care group and a regularly visiting group, and the experimental group A was for group reminiscence therapy with mugwort fragrance inhalation and the group B for group reminiscence therapy. Result: The group reminiscence therapy with mugwort fragrance inhalation showed significant effects on decrease of pain and depression, and improvement of ego integrity, and for 2 weeks after the treatment proved its continuous effect. Conclusion: The result above explains the fact the mugwort fragrance stimulates reminiscence and shows curing effects. In further researches, it is necessary to adapt various health problems of the elderly, not only to the aged with chonic pain.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the mediating effect of a sense of self-integration in the relationship between death anxiety and death anxiety on the quality of life for the elderly living in rural areas. First, death anxiety among the elderly living in rural areas was found to have a negative effect on the quality of life, and among the sub-elements of death anxiety, the anxiety of loss of existence and the anxiety of the death process were negative on the quality of life. Second, it was found that there is a positive effect on the sense of self-integration, which is a parameter such as anxiety about loss of existence, anxiety about the death process, and anxiety about post-mortem outcomes. Third, it was confirmed that the sense of self-integration mediates between death anxiety and quality of life. Based on the results of this study, several discussions and suggestions were made to improve the quality of life of the elderly living in rural areas by improving the sense of self-integration and reducing death anxiety.

A study on predictive factors of Elderly Suicidal Ideation (노인의 자살생각 예측요인)

  • This study describes predictive factors for elderly suicidal ideation by analyzing the survey data from 359 people who were over 65 years old in Daegu, Korea. The mean score of social support(3.35), self-esteem(3.38), depression(8.64) and suicidal ideation(1.65) of elderly residence. Social support, self-esteem and suicidal ideation had negative correlation. Depression and suicidal ideation had positive correlation. Suicidal ideation was significantly different according to age, education, spouse, living arrangement, type of medical guarantee, pocket money, past job, leisure(time), health status, number of chronic disease, smoking. Others support, self-esteem, pocket money, education, age were influencing factors of suicidal ideation(48.2%). Among them, 41.8% of others support was.
