  • Fish species composition and size frequency distribution of major species were analyzed using seasonal samples collected by an otter trawl in the coastal water off Uljin and Hupo in 2002. Fish collected during the study were 20 species, 1,927 individuals and 53,969 g off Uljin, and 23 species, 2,762 individuals and 146,550 g off Hupo. Liparis tessellatus, Glyptocephalus stelleri and Cleisthenes pinetorum were predominated in abundance, and these 3 species were accounted for 70.9% in the number of individuals and 83.8% in biomass off Uljin, and 90.3% and 70.9% off Hupo, respectively. In the Korean coastal water of the East Sea, the migrating pelagic fish were predominated in catch by set net or gill net, and species composition varied greatly by season. Meanwhile, the fish collected by an otter trawl in the coastal water off Uljin and Hupo were dominated by the resident demersal fishes and did not show any clear seasonal trend in species composition. Collected G. stelleri and C. pinetorum were mainly composed of young fish, and size data as depth indicated that they moved into deeper shelf as they grew.

  • The fish species composition and variation in the Youngil Bay, East Sea of Korea, were investigated every month from January, 2001, to December, 2002, using gill nets for sample collection. A total of 63 fish species belonging to 31 families under 10 orders, and a total of 40 species belonging to 26 families under 8 orders, were identified in 2001 and 2002, respectively. Of these, the families Pleuronectidae (9 species), Scorpaenidae (8 species) and Cottidae (5 species) were dominant in 2001, whereas Pleuronectidae (4 species), Cottidae (3 species) and Hexagrammidae (3 species) were dominant in 2002. The number of species recovered was the highest in August, 2001 (34 species) and January and September, 2002 (14 species each), and lowest in May, 2001 (6 species) and December, 2002 (5 species). The principal component analysis for each year showed that fish species composition differed over time even within the same sample area. In addition, the relationship between PC scores and temperature showed a positive relationship in 2001, but a negative relationship in 2002.

  • This is the first report of Cantherhines pardalis (Tetraodontiformes: Monacanthidae) from Korea. A single specimen (105.4 mm in SL) was collected from the coastal waters of Busan by gill net on 20 June, 2012. This species is characterized by having the following morphological traits: II, 34 dorsal fin rays; 31 anal fin rays; 13 pectoral fin rays; caudal peduncle without large spines; spine row on the lateral side of first dorsal spine distinct; posterior end of pelvic with encasing scales distinctly more protruding than ventral flap. This species is similar to C. dumerilii except for the number of spines on caudal peduncle (none in C. pardalis vs. two pairs in C. dumerilii). Based on morphological and molecular approaches, the specimen was identified as C. pardalis. We add C. pardalis to Korean fish fauna and propose the new Korean names "Yuk-gak-mu-nui-jwi-chi" for the species.

  • Bycatch and stranding of sea turtles from Jeju coastal water of Korea were monitered from 2008 to 2009. A total of 41 sea turtles, consisting of 12 greens (Chelonia mydas), 3 loggerheads (Caretta caretta), 1 hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata) and 25 unidentified species, were recorded and observed in those area. Reported stranding and bycatch reached to a peak in August. The largest number of bycatch occurred in the coastal waters around Aewol-eup located in northwest area of Jeju Island. Most of the bycatch were taken by set nets and gill nets, which prevailed over the fishing grounds in the coastal waters of the Jeju Island. It is suggested that an appropriate monitoring system be necessary to conserve endangered sea turtle species in Jeju of Korea.

  • Species composition in the coastal waters off Ulleungdo of Korea were examined based on catches bimonthly collected by trammel net in 2013. A total of 711 individuals and 181.9 Kg were caught and catches were composed of 4 classes 15 orders 27 families 52 species including 44 Pisces, 4 Gastropoda, 3 Cephalopoda, and 1 Echinodermata. The dominant species in biomass were File fish (Thamnaconus modestus), Atka mackerel (Pleurogrammus azonus), and Greenling (Hexagrammos otakii). Data were summarized using hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) and detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) to examine similarity in species composition for each month, and community structure in Ulleungdo was divided into two groups. Community structures in February, April and December with low temperature and well-mixed surface water were distinguished from those in June, August and October with high temperature and strong stratification, which could be attributed to temporal changes in dominant species. Atka mackerel and Spear squid mainly caught in February and April, disappearing in June, August and October, and File fish outburst was shown in October. Because the water off Ulleungdo has been under low human pressure, it could be a good case study to elucidate effects of climate change on community structure and ecosystem in the East sea. Continuous surveys and further studies are required to demonstrate migration route and distribution of dominant species and long-term changes in community structure in the water of Ulleungdo.

  • Two flatfish species were collected between January 2010 and August 2010 from fishing vessels operating with fishing, gill net and shrimp trawls along the coastal waters off Tongyeong, Korea in order to examine feeding habits. Kareius bicoloratus fed mainly on bivalves and fishes, whereas Clidoderma asperrimum fed mainly on ophiuroids. Our feeding strategy graphical method reveled that K. coloratus and C. asperrimum were specialist predator, with a narrow niche width.

  • The fishing ground surrounding Wangdol-cho is not only overexploited by the littering of dilapidated fishing net and equipment, but also by fishermen's overfishing, surpassing optimum fisheries resources. In addition, increasing fishing efforts (number of fishing vessel and fishing net, etc) contribute to the deterioration of fishing ground, and it is urgently required that schemes to tackle the problems should be taken. To effectively address the problems as such, this paper aims to propose sustainable utilization and management scheme of fishing ground through classification of fishing ground surrounding Wangdol-cho as one area which is less than 50m deep, measuring $13.66km^2$ and the other, permission fishing area of Gill Net fishery, measuring $347.23km^2$. The analysis shows that, for the water area less than 50m deep, implementation from a short-term perspective includes autonomous management fishery by gill net and trap fishery. For the permission fishing area of Gill Net fishery, implementation includes limit on fishing period, real name system of fishing equipment and limit on fishing equipment. Implementation from a medium and long-term perspective includes limit on scuba diving, designation of underwater sightseeing zone, sea farming, facilities of surveillance, adoption of approval system for the permission fishing area of Gill Net fishery and introduction of report system for fishing.

  • Seasonal variation in species composition around Dokdo, East Sea of Korea, was investigated using trammel-net catches, from 2006 to 2009. A total of 53 fish species belonging to 23 families in 12 orders were captured; the orders Perciformes (12 families, 22 species) and Scorpaeniformes (four families, 22 species) were dominant. Between 2008 and 2009, 43 species were collected by trammel net. The number of species was highest in August 2009 (25 species) and lowest in February 2009 (11 species). The number of individuals and total biomass peaked in November 2009. Diversity indices for fish catches were highest in August 2008 (2.4368) and lowest in November 2009 (0.4253). The dominant species were Thamnaconus modestus and Sebastes schlegeli. Hierarchical clustering analysis showed five fish groups, with frequency and number of individuals similar to results of correspondence analysis (CA), which showed a closer relationship to the year term than the season term. CA showed that temperature was an important factor influencing fish species richness and abundance. Three main fish assemblage types coexisted around Dokdo: an East Sea coastal fish assemblage, a subtropical fish assemblage, and a cold water fish assemblage.

  • There are many studies of the biodegradable net for fishing to prevent marine pollution in Korea and the snow crab gill nets is developed effectively. Recently, the biodegradable gill net for fishes is being developed. This study is the experiment of the catch characteristics for the biodegradable flounder gill net. The 8 experiments were carried out using the nylon gill net and the biodegradable gill net in from August to October, 2011 in the southern East Sea. The results obtained from the above approaches are summarized as follows; A total of 16 species was caught with most dominant species of Cleisthenes pinetorum followed by Liparis tanakai, Glyptocephalus stelleri, Buccinum striatissimum and Dasycottus setiger. A total of catch of the nylon net was 342,885g and that of the biodegradable net was 236,857g. Thus catch of the nylon net was 1.45 times more than that of the biodegradable net. The length composition of Cleisthenes pinetorum, caught by the biodegradable net was very similar to that of nylon. As a result of analysis on the effect of submerged time, small fish escaped more easily than large fish as the submerged time is getting longer. And catches of the biodegradable net was less than the nylon net's as higher as wave height. Wave height was more influential factor for fishing capacity than submerged time based on the results of a comparison between catch difference of two kinds of gill nets and catch characteristics.
