  • This study examines how frequently employers offer family-friendly corporate programs and how frequently employees use the programs. This study also seeks to discover whether the implementation and utilization of family-friendly corporate programs results in an increase in employees' childbirths. Data were collected from 377 married full-time employees working in private sector companies located in Seoul and GyeongGi-Do. Frequency analyses of the employees' responses showed moderate rates of implementation of family-friendly corporate programs and much lower rates of employees' utilization. The hierarchical regression analysis revealed that the implementation of family-friendly corporate programs significantly predicted employees' childbirths. However, this was ineffective, having no significant influence on employees' childbirths, when their utilization of the programs was entered into the model. Higher rates of utilization of family-friendly corporate programs predicted more childbirths after employment. This study suggests that the implementation of family-friendly corporate programs per se is not a complete solution to get employees to have more babies. Rather, what matters is the usability of those programs. Finally, the implications of the study results are discussed.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand the experiences and perspectives of the self-reliance program participants through a longitudinal qualitative study from 2006 to 2012. Based on Grounded theory approach, it examines how participants managed their lives up to now status. Through open-coding process, 181 meanings were identified. Paradigm model shows that the goal of the self-reliance program can be viewed as causal condition. However, contextual factors such as poverty experiences and child-support affected the self-reliance program participants to adapt and stay in the program rather than actively participate in the market. The finding shows that the meaning of self-reliance are differently understood by policy makers and self-reliance program participants.

  • The study aims to investigate nocturnal sleep duration in 4-year-olds and relative effects of various factors including the personal factor (temperament), the familial factor (mother's employment status), the time-use factors (hours spent in childhood educare institutions, on napping in the institutions, and on using electronic media). The data of 937 4-year-olds collected by the Korea Children and Youth Panel Survey in 2012 was analyzed. Using SPSS 21.0 program, frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation analysis and hierarchical regression were conducted. The results are as follows. First, there were significant negative correlations among the personal factor, familial factor and time-use factors. Finally, the time-use factors showed largest explanatory power on variance of children's nocturnal sleep duration, followed by the familial factor. But the personal factor was not statistically significant. These results suggested that parents and childhood educare institutions need to cooperate in order for children to sleep well. It is also necessary to implement and spread the social systems to support healthy development of children.

Finally for social factors, awareness of welfare services and systems, use of public institutions and civil organizations, and participation in social groups were included. We recruited 256 immigrant wives who live in Asan City, Chungnam Province and the data were analyzed by multiple linear regression. The factors that statistically significant were: ego-resiliency, marital duration, acculturation to Korean culture and economic status among personal factors; parenting efficacy, marital satisfaction and marriage process (married without a matchmaker) among domestic factors; participation in self-help group of women from the same mother country, awareness of welfare services and systems, participation in hobby club, and participation in fraternal/religious society among social factors. It is hoped that this paper will yield general insights into subjective well-being of immigrant wives and may help them to develop inner talent and strength.
