  • Recently, a first-principles study led to a prediction that quaternary Heusler compounds, CoFeCrZ (Z = Ga, Ge) are excellent half-metallic ferromagnets. In this study, we investigate the electronic and the magnetic properties at the (001) surfaces of CoFeCrGa and CoFeCrGe by means of the full-potential linearized augmented plane wave (FLAPW) method within generalized gradient approximation. We considered two types of surface termination: CoFe-terminated and CrZ-terminated surfaces, Z being either Ga or Ge. From the calculated total magnetic moments and the local density of states, we found that half-metallicity is not preserved for all the surfaces. But the calculated atomic density of states showed that CrGa-terminated surface of the CoFeCrGa is almost half-metallic. The magnetic moment of the Co, Fe, or Cr atoms at the surface or subsurface layers in each system had very different values.

  • We examine the effect of U term (U = 3 eV) describing the Coulomb interactions between electrons on the results of electronic band structure calculations carried out for bcc Fe bulk, monolayer, and chain. We investigated the properties of the three Fe structures by using the all-electron total-energy full-potential linearized augmented plane wave method. The U term was included in the exchange - correlation functionals constructed on the basis of local density approximation (LDA) and general gradient approximation (GGA). We found that in the case of bcc Fe bulk structure inclusion of the U term leads to the overestimated values of magnetic moment on Fe atom. The values of magnetic moment calculated for Fe in monolayer and chain are in accordance with calculations in which the U term was not included. In general, for each system the calculated values of magnetic moment on Fe sites were larger when the U term was incorporated in the energy functional. In Fe bulk, the value of magnetic moment $2.54{\mu}_B$ for LDA+U larger than $2.25{\mu}_B$ for LDA.

  • We investigated the magnetism and electronic structures for the layered structures consisting of (110) layers of zinc-blende CrAs and MnAs. We calculated the electronic structures for $(CrAs)_3(MnAs)_3(110)$ superlattice consisted of alternating three layers of CrAs(110) and MnAs(110) by the full-potential linearized augmented plane wave (FLAPW) method. The calculated magnetic moment of Cr in interface layer ($3.07\;\mu_B$) was slightly larger than that of Cr atom in center layer ($3.06\;\mu_B$), while that of interface Mn atom ($3.74\;\mu_B$) was slightly smaller than the value of Mn atom in center layer ($3.76\;\mu_B$). The electronic structure and half-metallicity in this superlattice were discussed using the calculated density of states.

  • In order to study electronic structures for locally disordered systems, we have developed a first-principle self-con-sistent-spin-polarized real space band method (TB-LMTO-R), which combines the tight-binding(TB) linear-muffin-tin orbital(LMTO) band rrethod and the recursion(R) rrethod. The TB-LMTO-R rrethod has been applied to fer-romagnetic bec Fe, hcp Co, and fcc Ni. With varying cluster sizes, recursion coefficients, and the order of the TB-Hamiltonian, we have calculated the local density of states(LDOS) and magnetic moments. It is found that the calculation with 5,000 atoms cluster, 40 continued fractions, and the second-order TB-Hamiltonian yields a conver¬gent result in agreement with those from the conventional LMTO. In this way, we have demonstrated a physical transparency of the TB-LMTO-R method as a real space description.

  • We designed and fabricated an improved null-type torque magnetometer for measuring magnetic anisotropy of magnetic materials. This torque magnetometer has a measurement range of $~{\pm}15$ dyne.cm, and the range can be controlled. Resolution is ~0.0005 dyne.cm. Noise level is less than 0.01 dyne.cm with one measurement, and less than 0.004 dyne.cm with 10 averaged measuremets. The precision is less than 0.5 %. In contrast to typical null-type torque magnetometers, we placed a small ferrite magnet in the Helmholtz coil, instead of placing coil in the permanent magnet. From this novel sturucture, we can design a geometrically isotropic and relatively light-weight sample rod. Also, we can prevent the effect of input and output lines of coil exposed in the magnetic field in torque meter. Consequently, our novel null-type torque magnetometer can have a better sensitivity, faster response time, and smaller distortion of torque curve than commercially available torque magnetometers.

  • In this study, the generating of torque regarding the Control Moment Gyro (CMG) is proportional to the angular velocity of gimbal. This is the case because gimbal affects the attitude control of the satellite directly, and it is necessary to reduce the incidence of torque ripple of gimbal. In this paper, the cause of the torque ripple of gimbal is reviewed and mathematically modeled by assuming the friction imbalance of bearing, the magnetic field and the phase current imbalance of the motor. We are able to confidently estimate the modeling parameters of gimbal disturbance using a constant speed test, and then analyze the influence of applying feedforward control to our modeling. Additionally, the simulation results show that the torque ripple and angular velocity fluctuations are reduced when apply this modeling to the identified study parameters. Finally, we present the disturbance reduction technique using our disturbance modeling.

  • The electromagnetic forces generate a torque on the gimbal motor, and changes in the coil current causes torque ripple. This affects the gimbals' speed and results to unstable satellite attitude. It is therefore essential to reduce the torque ripple of the gimble motor with the aim of improving the attitude control accuracy of the satellite. This paper theoretically analyzes the torque generated from the modeling of a motor for general concentrated winding and distributed winding. The prototype was designed and fabricated through selection of the winding that reduces the torque ripple through simulation results. The results of the magnetic fields' theoretical analysis and the back electromotive force of the prototype were compared with the calibrated results for verification of conformity and manufacture of the design. The low-speed test proved that the torque ripple is reduced by improving the speed stability.

  • Determination of the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of the magnetically doped bismuth-telluride alloys are drawing lots of interest in the fields of the thermoelectric application as well as the research on magnetic interaction and topological insulator. In this study, we performed the first-principles electronic structure calculations within the density functional theory for the Gd doped bismuth-tellurides in order to study its magnetic properties and magnetic phase stability. All-electron FLAPW (full-potential linearized augmented plane-wave) method is employed and the exchange correlation potentials of electrons are treated within the generalized gradient approximation. In order to describe the localized f-electrons of Gd properly, the Hubbard +U term and the spin-orbit coupling of the valence electrons are included in the second variational way. The results show that while the Gd bulk prefers a ferromagnetic phase, the total energy differences between the ferromagnetic and the antiferromagnetic phases of the Gd doped bismuth-telluride alloys are about ~1meV/Gd, indicating that the stable magnetic phase may be changed sensitively depending on the structural change such as defects or strains.

  • We simulated the magnetization reversal behavior of submicron-thickness magnetic films by applying pulses of sub-ns-long durations and amplitudes along the easy axis. The films were rectangular and elliptical $Ni_{80}Fe_{20}$, and their thickness was 2 nm and 4 nm. We observed different behaviors depending upon the shape and thickness of the films and found a normal non-switching in regions in which we expected complete switching after relaxation. In the elliptical film, the non-switching regions were found to be random and to be widely distributed throughout the switching map. The strong demagnetization field along the z-axis, the film thickness direction, is likely responsible for this abnormal behavior. In the rectangular film, the abnormal non-switching regions were less distributed than they were in the elliptical film due to edge domains resulting from the small $M_z$ or demagnetization field during the switching. Our simulation confirms that large demagnetization is detrimental to the ultra-fast magnetization reversal of magnetic ultra-thin films.

  • In this study, we developed irreversible and stable micro-size ferromagnetic structures utilizing hydrogenation and electron-beam lithography processes. The compositionally modulated (CM) Fe-Zr thin films that had average compositions $Fe_XZr_{100-x}$ with $x=65-85\%$ modulation periods of similar to 1 nm, and total thicknesses of similar to 100 m were prepared. The magnetic properties of CM Fe-Zr thin films were measured using a SQUID magnetometer, VSM and B-H loop tracer. After hydrogenation, the CM films exhibited larger magnetic moment increases than similar homogeneous alloy films for all compositions and かey showed largest increase in $Fe_{80}Zr_{20}$ composition. After aging in air at $300^{\circ}K$ the hydrogenated $Fe_{80}Zr_{20}$ CM films showed much larger magnetic moment increases, indicating that they relax to a stable, irreversible, soft magnetic state. The selective hydrogenation through electron-beam lithographed windows were performed after the circle shaped windows were prepared on $Fe_{80}Zr_{20}$ CM films by electron beam lithography. The hydrogenation through electron-beam resist and W lithographic techniques give a $49\%$ magnetic moment increase. This method can be applied to nano scale structures.
