Many process variables in modem manufacturing processes have influence on quality of products with complicated relationships. Therefore, it is necessary to control multiple quality variables in order to monitor abnormal signals in the processes. This study proposes an integrated procedure of self-organizing map (SOM) neural network and case-based reasoning (CBR) for multivariate process control. SOM generates patterns of quality variables. The patterns are compared with the reference patterns in order to decide whether their states are normal or abnormal using the goodness-of-fitness test. For validation, it generates artificial datasets consisting of six patterns, normal and abnormal patterns. Experimental results show that the abnormal patterns can be detected effectively. This study also shows that the CBR procedure enables to keep Type 2 error at very low level and reduce Type 1 error gradually, and then the proposed method can be a solution fur multivariate process control.
The regional frequency analysis is the method which uses not only sample of target station but also sample of neighborhood stations in which are classified as hydrological homogeneous regions. Consequently, identification of homogeneous regions is a very important process in regional frequency analysis. In this study, homogeneous regions for regional frequency analysis of precipitation were identified by the self-organizing map (SOM) which is one of the artificial neural network. Geographical information and hourly rainfall data set were used in order to perform the SOM. Quantization error and topographic error were computed for identifying the optimal SOM map. As a result, the SOM model organized by $7{\times}6$ array with 42 nodes was selected and the selected stations were classified into 6 clusters for rainfall regional frequency analysis. According to results of the heterogeneity measure, all 6 clusters were identified as homogeneous regions and showed more homogeneous regions compared with the result of previous study.
The purpose of this paper is to show the clustering measurement way for Korean container terminals by using neural network based SOM(Self Organizing Map). Inputs[Number of Employee, Quay Length, Container Terminal Area, Number of Gantry Crane], and output[TEU] are used for 3 years(2002,2003, and 2004) for 8 Korean container terminals by applying both DEA and SOM models. Empirical main results are as follows: First, the result of DEA analysis shows the possibility for clustering among the terminals and reference terminals except Gamcheon and Gwangyang terminals because of the locational closeness. Second, the result of neural network based SOM clustering analysis shows the positive clustering in clustering positions 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. Third, the results between SOM clustering and DEA clustering show the matching ratio about 67%. The main policy implication based on the findings of this study is that the port policy planner of Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs in Korea should introduce the clustering measurement way for the Korean container terminals using neural network based SOM with DEA models for clustering Korean ports and terminals.
The prediction of bankruptcy has been extensively studied in the accounting and finance field. It can have an important impact on lending decisions and the profitability of financial institutions in terms of risk management. Many researchers have focused on constructing a more robust bankruptcy prediction model. Early studies primarily used statistical techniques such as multiple discriminant analysis (MDA) and logit analysis for bankruptcy prediction. However, many studies have demonstrated that artificial intelligence (AI) approaches, such as artificial neural networks (ANN), decision trees, case-based reasoning (CBR), and support vector machine (SVM), have been outperforming statistical techniques since 1990s for business classification problems because statistical methods have some rigid assumptions in their application. In previous studies on corporate bankruptcy, many researchers have focused on developing a bankruptcy prediction model using financial ratios. However, there are few studies that suggest the specific types of bankruptcy. Previous bankruptcy prediction models have generally been interested in predicting whether or not firms will become bankrupt. Most of the studies on bankruptcy types have focused on reviewing the previous literature or performing a case study. Thus, this study develops a model using data mining techniques for predicting the specific types of bankruptcy as well as the occurrence of bankruptcy in Korean small- and medium-sized construction firms in terms of profitability, stability, and activity index. Thus, firms will be able to prevent it from occurring in advance. We propose a hybrid approach using two artificial neural networks (ANNs) for the prediction of bankruptcy types. The first is a back-propagation neural network (BPN) model using supervised learning for bankruptcy prediction and the second is a self-organizing map (SOM) model using unsupervised learning to classify bankruptcy data into several types. Based on the constructed model, we predict the bankruptcy of companies by applying the BPN model to a validation set that was not utilized in the development of the model. This allows for identifying the specific types of bankruptcy by using bankruptcy data predicted by the BPN model. We calculated the average of selected input variables through statistical test for each cluster to interpret characteristics of the derived clusters in the SOM model. Each cluster represents bankruptcy type classified through data of bankruptcy firms, and input variables indicate financial ratios in interpreting the meaning of each cluster. The experimental result shows that each of five bankruptcy types has different characteristics according to financial ratios. Type 1 (severe bankruptcy) has inferior financial statements except for EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) to sales based on the clustering results. Type 2 (lack of stability) has a low quick ratio, low stockholder's equity to total assets, and high total borrowings to total assets. Type 3 (lack of activity) has a slightly low total asset turnover and fixed asset turnover. Type 4 (lack of profitability) has low retained earnings to total assets and EBITDA to sales which represent the indices of profitability. Type 5 (recoverable bankruptcy) includes firms that have a relatively good financial condition as compared to other bankruptcy types even though they are bankrupt. Based on the findings, researchers and practitioners engaged in the credit evaluation field can obtain more useful information about the types of corporate bankruptcy. In this paper, we utilized the financial ratios of firms to classify bankruptcy types. It is important to select the input variables that correctly predict bankruptcy and meaningfully classify the type of bankruptcy. In a further study, we will include non-financial factors such as size, industry, and age of the firms. Thus, we can obtain realistic clustering results for bankruptcy types by combining qualitative factors and reflecting the domain knowledge of experts.

The purpose of this paper is to reduce the number of cutting tests and to predict the main cutting force and the specific cutting energy. By using the SOFM neural network, the most suitable cutting test conditions has been found. As a result, the number of cutting tests has been reduced to one-third. And by using MLP neural network and regression analysis, the main cutting force and specific cutting energy has been predicted. Predicted values of main cutting force and specific cutting energy are well concide with the measured ones.
Objectives of this study were to identify the hotspot for displacement of the on-line water quality sensors, in order to detect illicit discharge of untreated wastewater. A total of twenty-six water quality parameters were measured in sewer networks of the industrial complex located in Daejeon city as a test-bed site of this study. For the water qualities measured on a daily basis by 2-hour interval, the self-organizing maps(SOMs), one of the artificial neural networks(ANNs), were applied to classify the catchments to the clusters in accordance with patterns of water qualities discharged, and to determine the hotspot for priority sensor allocation in the study. The results revealed that the catchments were classified into four clusters in terms of extent of water qualities, in which the grouping were validated by the Euclidean distance and Davies-Bouldin index. Of the on-line sensors, total organic carbon(TOC) sensor, selected to be suitable for organic pollutants monitoring, would be effective to be allocated in D and a part of E catchments. Pb sensor, of heavy metals, would be suitable to be displaced in A and a part of B catchments.

Studies on modeling the rainfall-runoff relationship which shows nonlinear trend strongly use artificial neural networks theory not only for the prediction but also for the characteristics analysis of the data used by pattern classification. For the pattern classification, the results from Self-Organizing Map (SOM) mention that the map size and array for the SOM training have significantly influenced on the SOM performance. Since there is no deterministic method or theoretical equation to determine the number of rows and columns for the map size, hexagonal array is generally used for the map array. Therefore, this study present a determination of the optimized map structure for the rainfall-runoff analysis in Naju station considering the map size and array simultaneously which can represent the classified characterization of rainfall-runoff relationship. The result showed that the map size of 20$\times$16 hexagonal array with 8-clustered patterns was selected as an appropriate map structure for rainfall-runoff analysis in Naju station.
Recently, as most companies recognize the importance of the customer relationship management, they strongly believe that they must know who their customers are. The job of a customer is very important information for us to understand the customer. However, since most customers are reluctant to reveal them-selves, they do not let us know their jobs, and even provide false information about their jobs. The target domain of our research is mobile telecommunication. In this research, we developed a system that identifies the customer's job by utilizing the Call Detail Record. Using artificial neural networks, we developed a two-step Job Identification System. In the first step, it identifies the four job classes, then in the second step, it subdivides these four job classes into seven jobs. The accuracy of identifying the seven jobs was $71.9\%$.
We named the system Visual Path Map which visualizes the distribution of clusters according to characteristics and entire process about exercise prescription, and we purpose to visualize a process according to exercise prescription. Visual Path Map visualizes the distribution of clusters according to characteristics, current and object distribution, and changed distribution for prescription. So it visualizes paths from current distribution to object distribution according to prescription. We used SOM in order to express properties along subjects in Visual Path map, and visualized distribution of clusters about physical characteristics, body mass index, and age information of 1,500 ordinary people. Also we visualize practical exercise prescription according to real data of expert of exercise prescription.

This paper presents a fuzzy neural network model which solves the underutilization problem. This fuzzy neural network has both stability and flexibility because it uses the control structure similar to AHT(Adaptive Resonance Theory)-l neural network. And this fuzzy nenral network does not need to initialize weights and is less sensitive to noise than ART-l neural network is. The learning rule of this fuzzy neural network is the modified and fuzzified version of Kohonen learning rule and is based on the fuzzification of leaky competitive leaming and the fuzzification of conditional probability. The similarity measure of vigilance test, which is performed after selecting a winner among output neurons, is the relative distance. This relative distance considers Euclidean distance and the relative location between a datum and the prototypes of clusters. To compare the performance of the proposed fuzzy neural network with that of Kohonen Self-Organizing Feature Map the IRIS data and Gaussian-distributed data are used.
