The magnetic abrasive polishing is the useful method to finish using magnetic power of a magnet. It's not a long time this method was introduced to korea as one of precision finishing techniques. The magnetic abrasive polishing method is not so common for machine that it is not spreaded widely. The are rarely researcher in this field because of no-effectiveness of magnetic abrasive. The mechanism of this R&D is dealing with the dynamic state of magnet-abusive. This paper deals with mediocritizing magnetic polishing device into regular lathe and this experiment was conducted in order to get the best surface roughness at low cost. We need to continue the research on it. This paper contains the result of experiment to acquire the best surface roughness, not using the high-cost polishing material in processing. The average diameters of magnetic abrasive are the particles of 150$\mu\textrm{m}$, 250$\mu\textrm{m}$.
The machining technology for the removal of micro-burr has been demanded because electrode parts of electron gun have minute holes. In this study, Magnetic Assisted Polishing(MAP) is applied to remove the micro-burr instead of the contentional polishing process such as the etching and barrel. Optimal polishing conditions are selected from many experiments using the tool of the flat end slit type. On the basis of experimental results, the deburring machine for the Magnetic Assisted Polishing of electrode part is developed and its performance is evaluated.
This paper describes a new surface finishing process which uses magnetic abrasive polishing. This is applied to automatic finishing of die & mold surface. Nowadays, most of die & mold meanufaturing procedures have been automated by the introduction of NC machine tool and CAD/CAM system. But the surface finishing of die & mold must be done by hand work of well-skilled workers. Though many attempts were tried in the past 15 years to eliminate this hand work, the automatic finishing of die & mold surface with 3D curvature has not been achieved yet. New magnetic abrasive finishing process is thought as one of the possible methods for the automation of 3D surface finishing. In order to improve the grindability of the method, ultra-high speed and 5-axis machining was introduce. The magnetic abrasive polishing which has adopted these methods was confirmend to improve the efficiencyof die & mold surface finishing.
Carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP), which have been developed for their high mechanical properties, are insufficient to secure machinery. This paper investigates the use of magnetic abrasive finishing methods and the characteristics of surface roughness for mirror machining of CFRP. The cylindrical surface of CFRP was ground using a diamond paste with sizes of 0.1, 0.5, 1 and 6${\mu}m$. Consequently, an effective surface roughness of 0.03${\mu}m(R_a)$ could be obtained via a paste size of 0.5${\mu}m$. The surface roughness was not improved due to epoxy abrasion between the carbon fiber and the epoxy.
Recently, the magnetorheological (MR) polishing process has been examined as a new ultra-precision polishing technology for mirror surface generation in many applications, such as aspheric lenses, biochips, micro parts, etc. This method uses MR fluids which contains micro abrasives as a polishing media, and can. It is possible to obtain nano level surface roughness under suitable process conditions, however, required polishing time is highly dependent on the applied pre-polishing methods due to its very small material removal rate. Thus, in this study, a combined polishing method is presented to reduce total polishing time for SUS304. First, the electropolishing (EP) method was applied to obtain fine surface roughness, and the MR polishing was followed. Surface roughness variations were investigated according to the process conditions. As the results of this study, it was possible to reduce total polishing time for SUS304 using the proposed combined polishing method.
As increasing demand for precise machining in advanced disciplines, especially in semi-conductor, aeronautical and automotive industries, the magnetic abrasive deburring(MAD) which is able to eliminate micro-sized burr on complex surface in less time has drawn the attention in the last decades. However, the performance of MAD is subject to shape and size of a tool. Therefore, this study aim to identify deburring behavior of MAD in U-type flow channel by measuring the length rate of burr removal in radial distance of the cylindrical tool under four process factors. In order to evaluate the deburring effect of MAD on the surface, finishing regions are divided based on center of the circular cutting tool. As a results, it was defined that the amount of burr removal in a downward direction moving toward flow channel from the top surface was higher than upward direction. This is because the magnetic abrasives were detached from magnetic lines of force due to geometrical shape.
In order to satisfy the customer's variant needs for a product quality in recent years, a demand for developing higher precision machining technologies in a lot of application areas such as automobile, cellular phone and semiconductor has been increased more and more. Micro-magnetic induced polishing(${\mu}-MIP$) process is one of these precision technologies. In this study, to verify the parameters' effect of the ${\mu}-MIP$ process on the surface roughness improvement of the inclined workpiece, well planned experiment which was called the design of experiments was carried out. Considered parameters were spindle speed, inductor current, abrasive configuration and working gap between the workpiece and the solid tool. As a result, it was seen that the inductor current and the working gap greatly affected the surface roughness improvement. And to predict the surface roughness of the inclined workpiece, S/N ratio and first-order response surface model was developed.
In previous study, it showed that the MAP was greatly effective polishing process for magnesium plate. But it had lower efficiency than magnetic materials such as SM45C. It was very difficult to cut non-magnetic materials using the MAP process because the process was fundamentally possible by help of a magnetic force. This study aimed to verify analytically formation of the magnetic field in a case of the non-magnetic materials especially focused on magnesium plate. So, In this study, the magnetic density flux was predicted using simulation program. As a result, the magnetic density flux was lower at the center of pole on inductor than outside. It had same result on the experimental verification. And magnetic force was lower according to increase of working gap. So, to improve the magnetic force, permanent magnet was installed under the workpiece. In that case, the magnetic density flux not only at center but also at outside of pole was increased. Therefore, the efficiency of magnetic abrasive polishing was also increased. A design of experimental method was adopted for assessment of parameters' effect on the MAP results of magnesium plate for improving the magnetic force.
