This paper describes an analysis of the stability and performance of a large-capacity flywheel energy storage system (FESS) supported by active magnetic bearings. We designed and manufactured the system that can store up to 5kWh of usable energy at the maximum speed of 18,000 rpm. In order to analyze the stability of the systems accurately, we derived a rigid body rotor model, flexible rotor model using finite-element method, and a reduced-order model using modal truncation. The rotor model is combined with those of active magnetic bearings, amplifiers, and position sensors, resulting in a system simulation model. This simulation model is validated against experimental measurements. The stability of the system is checked from the pole locations of the closed-loop transfer functions. We also investigated the sensitivity function to quantify the robustness of the systems to the disturbances such as mass imbalance and sensor noises.
This paper presents an optimal design of a magnetorheological(MR) fan clutch based on finite element analysis and also presents torque control of engine cooling fan using a sliding mode control. The MR fan clutch is constrained in a specific volume and the optimization problem identifies the geometric dimension of the fan clutch that minimizes an objective function. The objective function for the optimization problem is determined based on the solution of the magnetic circuit of the initially designed clutch. Under consideration of spatial limitation, design parameters are optimally determined using finite element analysis. After describing the configuration of the MR fan clutch, the viscous torque and controllable torque are obtained on the basis of the Bingham model of MR fluid. Then, a sliding mode controller is designed to control the torque of the fan clutch according to engine room temperature and control performance is evaluated through computer simulation.
In this paper vibration and stability analysis of laminated composite shells based on the first order shear deformation theory(FSDT) for two different boundary conditions(clamped-clamped, simply supported) are performed. Structural model of cross-ply symmetric laminated composite cylindrical shells subjected to a combination of magnetic and thermal fields is developed via Hamilton's variational principle. These coupled equations of motion are based on the electromagnetic equations(Faraday, Ampere, Ohm, and Lorenz equations)and thermal equations which are involved in constitutive equations. Extended Galerkin method is adopted to obtain the discretized equations of motion. Variations of dynamic characteristics of composite shells with applied magnetic field, temperature gradient, laminate thickness-ratio and radius ratio for two boundary conditions are investigated and pertinent conclusions are derived.
MRE(magneto-rheological elastomers) is a material which shows reversible and various modulus in magnetic field. Comparing to conventional rubber vibration isolator, MREs are able to absorb vibration of broader frequency range. These characteristic phenomena result from the orientation of magnetic particles named carbonyl iron powder(CIP) in rubber matrix. In this paper, simulation on variation rate of shear modulus for anisotropic MRE due to volume fraction of CIP and an effective permeability model was applied to predict the field-induced shear modulus of MREs. Also, the variation rate of shear modulus for anisotropic MRE was derived using magneto-mechanical theory. Based on Maxwell-Garnett mixing rule, the increment of shear modulus was calculated to evaluate the shear modulus of MREs with column structure of CIP due to induced current. The simulation results on variation rate of shear modulus can be applied to the variable mechanical system of MRE such as tunable vibration absorber, stiffness variable bush and mount.
A prosthetic knee for above-knee (AK) amputee is categorized into passive and active type. The passive prosthetic knee is generally made by elastic material. Although AK amputee can easily walk by using passive prosthetic leg, knee joint motions are not similar to ordinary persons. The active prosthetic leg can control the knee angle owing to the actuator and microprocessor. However, the active type is not cost-effective and the stability may be lost due to the malfunction of sensors. In order to resolve these disadvantages of passive and active type, a semi-active prosthetic knee which can control the knee angle is proposed in this work. The proposed semi-active one requires a less input energy but provides active type performance. In order to achieve this goal, in this work, a semi-active prosthetic knee using magneto-rheological (MR) damper for AK amputees is designed. The MR damper can support the weight of body by using less energy than actuator of active prosthetic. It can control knee angle by inducing the magnetic field at the time of stance phase. This salient characteristic is evaluated and presented in this work.
A new method for the simulation of the vehicle's interior road noise is proposed in the present study. The road noise model can synthesize road noise of a vehicle for varying driving speed within a range. In the proposed method, interior road noise is considered as a stochastic time-series, and is modeled by a nonstationary parametric model via two steps. First, each interior road noise signal, obtained from constant speed driving tests performed within a range of speed, is modeled as an autoregressive model whose parameters are estimated by using a standard method. Finally, the parameters obtained for different driving speeds are interpolated based on the varying driving speed to yield a time-varying autoregressive model. To model a full band road noise, audible frequency range is divided into an octave band using a wavelet filter bank, and the road noise in each octave band is modeled.
This paper proposes a new type of MR (magentorheological) fluid based suspension system and applies it to military vehicle for vibration control. The suspension system consists of gas spring and MR damper. The nonlinear behavior of spring characteristics is evaluated with respect to the wheel travel and damping force model due to viscosity and yield stress of MR fluid is derived. Subsequently, a military vehicle of 6WD is adopted for the integration of the MR suspension system and its nonlinear dynamic model is establishes by considering vertical, pitch and roll motion. Then, a sky-hook controller associated with semi-active actuating condition is designed to reduce the vibration. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed MR suspension system, computer simulation is undertaken showing vibration control performance such as roll angle and pitch angle evaluated under bump and random road profiles.
In this paper, a new electromagnetic circuit is proposed for an optical pickup actuator with high sensitivity. Contrary to those of conventional actuators, the proposed circuit has two focusing coils which are diagonally placed at the front and rear of a moving part. The configuration which makes the effective length of the focusing coil longer and the moving part lighter, is helpful in increasing the sensitivity of the actuator. However, the asymmetry of the moving part by two focusing coils causes flexible node vibrations in quite low frequency range. This paper shows that the design modification of the moving part for the reconfiguration of mass moment of inertia can reduce the mode vibrations.
