  • The purposes of this study were to understand the oral health promotion behavior and dental health condition of primary school children and to examine the relationships between the two variables. For that purpose, 729 fifth and sixth graders from four primary school located in Seoul were surveyed. In addition to the survey responses, dental examination results were used for analysis. The findings were as follows: 1. The children scored 3.51 out of full 5 points in oral health promotion behavior. they scored the highest at 3.82 in dietary habits, which were followed by going to a dentist for prevention purposes at 3.43, the method and frequency of brushing teeth at 3.40 and the use of fluorine at 3.39. 2. It turned out that 46.9% of the children had decayed permanent teeth. The number of decayed teeth was $1.66{\pm}2.32$, that of missing teeth was $0.03{\pm}0.24$. 3. There were reverse correlations(r = -0.32) between the children's subjective perception of their dental health condition and decayed teeth. The more positive perceptions they had for their own dental health condition, the less decayed teeth they had(p < 0.01). 4. There were also reverse correlations(r = -0.10) between the children's oral health promotion behavior and decayed teeth. The more they were engaged in Behavior of alimentation, the less decayed teeth they had(p < 0.01). The results indicate that primary school children can keep their dental health by practicing the right oral health promotion behavior, which calls for a need to develop and apply dental health education programs to promote the oral health promotion behavior among primary school children.

  • In this study, the characteristics and oral health status of manufacturing workers were investigated to confirm the factors affecting their risk of developing dental caries and to prepare basic data for developing oral health promotion programs for such workers. A self-administered questionnaire survey and saliva microorganism examinations (S. mutans and Lactobacillus tests) were conducted from July 1 to August 1, 2014 targeting the manufacturing workers in the Busan and Gyungnam areas, to confirm the factors affecting dental caries development among manufacturing workers. As a result, the risk of dental caries was found to be higher in the workers who worked for 10 hours or longer a day than in those who worked for less than 10 hours a day, and in the smokers than in the non-smokers. A 1-point increase in the brushing pattern score resulted in 0.044 times less risk of dental caries development in the S. mutans test and 0.004 times less risk in the Lactobacillus test Therefore, systematic support is needed to improve the work environment of manufacturing workers, along with continuous oral health education in workplaces.

  • The purpose of this study is to improve the oral health after understanding the usage status of oral health items and to conduct active guidance for prohibition of smoking. The survey of 326 visitors for continuous oral health management in the dentist from April 2nd 2007 to May $20^{th}$ is accomplished. The data is handled from the SPSS 12.0 statistics program and we can get the results like below. 1. The number of people answering the usage of the smooth toothbrush is 64.5% which is higher in smoking peoples than in non-smoking ones (p < 0.001). Non-smoking people 61.4% answering '3 minutes more' per brushing their teeth is higher than smoking respondents. 2. The more used device is the interdental brush by non-smoking people 36.7% than smoking ones and the answer. 3. The percentage answering 'recommendation in the dentist' in the question about the motive using the oral health devices are nearly same in 69.6 % and 67.5% by non-smoking and smoking persons. The most reason not using these devices is 'don't know how to use this' and the number of smoking guys is 38.7% which is higher than that of non-smoking ones(p < 0.05). 4. The percentage of answering 'regular visiting the dentist', the method for oral health management is 28.3% in smoking parts and 35.3% in non-smoking ones which is slightly higher. From this study, the usage and the recognition of oral hygiene devices of the patient with smoking is a little bit lower than those of non-smoking patients and small difference is shown. So public relations of the effects and the necessity of the oral hygiene devices to all people have to be performed and the education and the activity prohibiting smoking are expanded by the dental hygienist based on the understanding of oral health when the patients are smoking or not.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to compare in vivo biofilm formation on titanium surface and zirconia surface. Materials and methods: For biofilm formation on titanium and zirconia in oral cavity, after producing oral appliances using acrylic resin and orthodontic wire tailored to 9 subjects, we made titanium and zirconia specimens ($6mm{\times}6mm{\times}2mm$), fixed them on oral appliances and maintained them in oral cavity of test subjects for 24 and 72 hours. Test subjects who have equipped two pairs of specimens maintained oral hygiene not by using toothpaste but only by tooth brushing. After 24 and 72 hours, we removed and observed specimens through scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results: Biofilm formation showed large deviation depending on individuals. For formation comparison between titanium and zirconia for 24 hours, zirconia showed less biofilm formation than titanium. Biofilm formation showed large deviation depending on individuals. As for formation comparison between zirconia and titanium, the degree of biofilm formation in zirconia was less than it was in titanium after a lapse of 24 hours. The result of biofilm formation in 72 hours trial show that zirconia has an inclination to formate less biofilm than it was in titanium. Conclusion: Based on the above results, we can conclude that early biofilm formation in oral cavity was influenced by difference of abutment materials.

  • Daejeon school-based toothbrushing program using toothbrushing room started at 2007. Ministry of Health and Welfare started national toothbrushing room program without pilot project at 2011. The aim of this study was to provide the basic data to assess of the effect of this program. 59 experimental subjects and 60 control subject were selected after written consent. Oral Examination was done by 1 dentist using WHO standard and Survey of Child Oral Health-Related Quality of Life(COHIP), oral health knowledge and oral health behavior were done using self-registration form. We analyzed the result after adjusting economic status and subjective for the difference between experimental and control groups using SPSS 19.0. The experimental group had lower plaque index, better COHIP and more oral health knowledge significantly(p<0.05). But, The significance was not found in dental caries index and oral health behavior. We suggested the oral health education program and other dental caries prevention program including sealants were needed to prevent dental caries, although school-based toothbrushing program could improve COHIP.
