  • This study examines how ecological impacts are addressed in the siting processes of European countries that are international leaders in offshore wind energy, and draws implications for Korea. The United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands, and Denmark are the countries with the most offshore wind installations after China. These European countries conduct strategic environmental assessments (SEAs) and appropriate assessments (AAs) at both the overall site planning stage and the individual site decision stage to evaluate ecological impacts from offshore wind power. In the UK, the SEA and AA for offshore wind are conducted separately at different stages of the siting process. Germany has three siting stages, and the Netherlands and Denmark have two siting stages, each of which includes both an SEA and an AA. Compared to the SEA, which assesses overall ecological impacts, the AA is limited to impacts on Natura 2000 sites, a network of protected areas for species and habitats. The ecological impacts of offshore wind are examined for birds, bats, marine mammals, fish, and benthic organisms.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the growth patterns of Maackia amurensis growing in natural forest of Mt. Joongwang, Pyongchang-gun, Kangwon-Do, Korea. The 28 sample plots(30m$\times$30m) wee established to examine the vegetation and environmental conditions for M. amurensis forest. Stem analysis was performed on two sample trees of M. amurensis for each of the 5 plots situated at intervals of one hundred meters by altitude. The results obtained were as follows: ⑴ Height growth of M. amurensis increased with increasing age until 10 years, and then decreased thereafter, especially at altitude of 1,020m. ⑵ M. amurensis showed rapid early growth of height and volume, indicating high biomass production under favorable environment. This growth pattern is typical of pioneer species such as Cornus controversa and Betula costata. ⑶ The rotation age of natural M. amuensis forest was estimated at above 50 years, and especially at about 60 years in 840m above the sea level. ⑷ Growth of M. amurensis increased greatly at about 40 years when released from severe competitions.

  • The following research was conducted to encourage residents in urban areas to move to rural areas, and to improve the residential environments in those rural areas. Current policies for rural village development Project were analyzed, and policy implications were proposed. Residents in rural villages participated in a 12-question survey that asked their priorities prior to moving to the area, and factors contributing to resident satisfaction. Importance and Performance Analysis (IPA) was performed to present potential development strategies in the construction business. As a result, 'natural environment and landscapes' had the highest priority and satisfaction, whereas 'lack of public transportation and accessibility' and 'road conditions and parking facilities' had high priorities but low satisfaction levels. Thus, it is important to take nature and environment, as well as accessibility into consideration when moving to rural villages. Although this research was based on residents' bias, and the sample area was limited, these conclusions still offer important policy agreement provide of future rural villages location selection and establishment of land use planning.

  • A wide range of projects for ocean renewable energy are currently in development around the world and ocean energy industries continue to receive significant support from their governments. Surrounded by sea on three sides, Korea has potentially abundant renewable ocean energy resources, which include tidal current, tidal range, offshore wind power, osmotic pressure and ocean thermal energy. Numerous ocean renewable energy projects has been developed in Korea. Nevertheless, there are some concerns that those developments often select an environmentally unsuitable location and/or there are very few existing information on those environmental effects. The purpose of this study is to improve supporting policies and regulation systems of ocean renewable energy development in Korea by reviewing and compiling government policies and environmental assessment systems related to ocean renewable energy development around the world. The study suggests several policy implications for its environmental-friendly development in Korea, including requirements of strategic environmental assessment for proactive and environmentally suitable site selection of ocean renewable energy development and continuous post-development environmental monitoring, and so on.
