The Growth Behavior of Surface Grains of WC-6%Co Alloy during Heat Treatment (WC-Co 소결체의 열처리시 나타나는 표면 입자 성장의 거동에 관한 연구)

  • WC-6%Co 소결체를 열처리할 때 발생하는, 시편 표면에서의 급격한 입자 성장 거동을 열처리 분위기를 변수로 하여 관찰하였다. 열처리 분위기로 수소와 메탄을 각각 사용하였고, 온도는 1400~145$0^{\circ}C$, 압력은 1~3 Torr, 그리고 시간은 100분까지 변화시켰다. 표면에서의 입자 성장은 수소 분위기보다 메탄 분위기를 사용하는 경우 훨씬 빠르게 일어났다. 그리고 열처리 온도가 증가할수록, 압력이 감소할수록 입자 성장 속도가 증가하였다. 이때 성장한 입자의 크기 분포는 비정규 분포를 보였다. 한편, 입자 성장은 열처리시 증발하는 시편의 Co 무게 감소와 밀접한 관계를 보였다. 이러한 표면에서의 입자 성장 현상을 열처리한 조건과 관련되어 WC-Co 상태도에서 예측할 수 있는, 탈탄-탄화 반응 및 비정상 입자 성장 현상 관점으로 설명하였다.

Abnormal grain growth of ZnO ceramics (ZnO 세라믹스 거대입성장)

  • In the process of ZnO ceramic sintering at a temperature of 1385℃, higher than the normal sintering temperature, some grains were growth up to mm scale. When sintered at 1400℃ for 8 hours, the size of the grains that are not involved in the abnormal growth is as large as 30~40 ㎛, but the size of the abnormal grown grain reaches 1,000 ㎛, which is more than 10,000 times bigger in volume than the normal one within 8 hr growth. As a cause of rapid and abnormal grain growth, primary particle size distribution, compaction density variation within sample and doping of impurities could be considered. The primary particle size distribution could be considered main reason for abnormal grain growth but no solid evidence was obtained. Through the observation of the microstructure, it is presumed that the giant grains grow absorbing the neighbor grains through a grain rotation process.

  • Ultrafine silicon dioxide($SiO_2$) powder was prepared from tetraethylorthosilicate(TEOS) by the gas-phase reaction. The effects of reaction temperature, flow rate of gas, TEOS concentration, and preheating temperature of reactants on the particle size were investigated. As the reaction temperature increased, average particle size of the silicone dioxide powder became smaller. Smaller particles were also obtained with decreasing the residence time of reactants in the reaction zone. Larger particles having narrow size distribution were produced with the high concentrations of the reactants. The effect of the preheating temperature was not considerable on the average particle size. The range of average particle size was from 30 nm to 58 nm depending on experimental conditions.

  • The characteristics of kinetic energy transfer during a collision between a rigid target particle on a surface and a fragile bullet particle moving at a high velocity were analyzed using molecular dynamics simulation. Bullet particles made of $CO_2$ were considered and their size, temperature, and velocity were varied over a wide range. The fraction of kinetic energy transferred from the bullet particle to the target particle was almost independent of the former's size or velocity; however, it was sensitively dependent on its temperature, which can be attributed to the change in the bullet rigidity with temperature. This fraction was nearly twice as high for $CO_2$ bullets as for Ar bullets. This result explains the reason for the more superior cleaning performance of $CO_2$ bullets than Ar bullets with regard to contaminants in the 10 nm size range.

  • Thermophoresis is a transport phenomenon of particles driven by a temperature gradient of a medium. In this paper, we discuss the thermophoresis of particles in microfluidic channels. In a non-fluidic, stagnant channel, the thermophoretic transport of micro-particles was found to be larger in proportion to the voltage applied to the platinum wire heat source installed in the channel. The variation of the temperature around the platinum wire depending on the voltage was estimated, by using the Callendar-van Dusen equation. The thermophoretic behavior of nano-particles in the same system was observed, which is similar to that of the microparticles. Finally, we fabricated a Y-shaped microfluidic channel with a platinum wire heat source installed in the channel, to realize the thermophoretic phenomenon of the particles in the suspension flowing through the channel. It is shown that the flow of the suspension can be controlled based on the thermophoretic principle.

Factors Affecting Gelatinization Temperature of Rice Starch (쌀 전분의 호화온도에 영향을 주는 요인들)

  • Factors affecting gelatinization temperature of rice starches from different varieties were investigated. Birefringence end-point temperature(BEPT), amylose content, granule size distribution and degree of crystallinity of rice starches showed the significant varietal differences at ${\alpha}\;=0.01$. Susceptibility of the granule to gelatininzation was dependent mainly on the degree of crystallinity, as indicated by the significant positive correlation between BEPT and the relative crystallinity(r=0.67, p<0.01). However, granule size distribution did not affect the GT(gelatinization temperature) range, nor did amylose electron microscopy (SEM). SEM also confirmed that there is no relationship between the size and the shape and the amylose content of the rice starch.

A Study on the Bagley End Correction of PIM Feedstocks (분말사출재의 Bagley보정에 관한 연구)

  • 분말 입자 형태가 다른 2가지 스테인레스 강(SUS 316L)분말과 조성이 다른 2가지의 결합제를 이용하여 분말충전율의 변화를 가지도록 제조된 5가지 분말사출재에 대한 Bagley 보정 실험을 실시하여 Bagley 보정값에 대한 온도, 분말충전율, 분말 입자 형태 그리고 결 합제의 영향을 조사하였다. Bagley 보정값을 구하기 위한 자료 처리를 하는 과정에서 길이 가 긴 모세관(L/D=60) 의 압력손실이 Thixotropy에 의해서 감소한 현상을 발견하였다. 이는 모세관 점성측정기를 이용한 분말사출제의 점도 측정시 길이가 긴모세관의 사용이 바람직하 지 못하다는 것을 나타낸다. 분말사출재의 Bagley 보정값에 대한 온도와 결합제의 영향은 매우 미약하게 나타났는데 특히 결합제의 영향은 거의 나타나지 않는 것을 발견하였다. 분 말충전율과 분말 입자 형태의 Bagley 보정값에 대한 영향은 매우 크게 나타났으며 분말충 전율이 증가할수록 Bagley 보정값이 증가하고 분말 입자의 형태가 불규칙한 분말을 사용한 분말사출재의 보정값이 구형의 분말에 비해 높은 보정값을 나타냈다. 실험결과에 대한 고찰 결과, 분말사출재의 모세관 입출구에서 압력손실의 주 원인은 분말 이자간 마찰과 충돌이라 고 판단되었다.

Spin-Flop of α-Fe2O3 Nano Particles (α-Fe2O3 나노 입자에서 Spin-Flop에 관한 연구)

  • We have synthesized monodispersed $\alpha$-F $e_2$ $O_3$ nano particles to investigate the spin change during the Morin transition temperature( $T_{M}$). The particle size was founded to have a very uniform distribution of 80 nm by x-ray diffraction and size dispersion analyzer. The Mossbauer spectra between the 4.2 K and the room temperature show that $T_{M}$ was shifted and the spin states of Fe ion were changed with the particle size. The Morin transition temperature of bulk usually quoted in literature is 265 K but, it decreases with the size and no transition was found at the critical size down to 4.2K. The spin direction of 80 nm sized particles are normal to the hexagonal c-axis above the $T_{M}$ and are tilted about 28~29$^{\circ}$ below $T_{M}$, which is the [110] direction of rombohedral structure.

  • The inclusion of thermophoresis in particle deposition studies has often been treated separately from deposition due to flow characteristics. Also previously reported experimental results on thermophoresis have been studied in the regions of relatively small temperature gradients. In this study, using real-time laser light reflectivity method, we measured the angular dependence of the deposition rates of particles of the cylindrical collector surface, which immerged in laminar flow of a hot gas suspension of small particles. And we extended the previous narrowband results of thermophoretic deposition rates to the regions of large temperature gradients between the hot gas stream and the collector surface. Based on the obtained data, the cylinder's forward stagnation-point region is considerably enriched in particle 'phase' density owing to the compressibility effect, which leads to locally enhanced deposition while the downstream region from the stagnation point inertial force acts in the opposite direction, which tends to centrifuge particles away from the wall, thus the local deposition rates by thermophoresis are reduced.

Effect of $U_3O_8$-seed on the grain growth of uranium dioxide ($U_3O_8$ 종자가 $UO_2$ 핵연료 소결체의 입자성장에 미치는 영향)

  • Densification and grain growth have been investigated in 5 wt% $U_3O_8$ seeded $UO_2$ and compared with those of the common $UO_2$ pellet. $UO_2$ compacts and $U_3O_8$ seeded $UO_2$ compacts were sintered at $1300{\sim}1700^{\circ}C$ for 0 h to 4 h. Density and grain size of the sintered pellets were measured by the water immersion method and the image analyzer, respectively. The seeded pellet has a slightly lower density during the intermediate sintering stage. However, the difference of density between two pellets decreases to about 0.5%TD with increasing the sintering temperature. The grain size of the two pellets is similar until $1600^{\circ}C$ but that of the seeded pellet rapidly increases with increasing the sintering temperature.
