  • Critical chloride content for corrosion initiation is a crucial parameter in determining the durability and integrity of reinforced concrete structures, however, the value is still ambiguous. Most of the studies reporting critical threshold chloride content have involved the experimental measurement of the average amount of the total chloride content at arbitrary time. The majority of these researches have not dealt with this issue combined with carbonation of concrete, although carbonation can significantly impact on critical threshold chloride content. Furthermore, the studies have tried to define the critical chloride content within the scope of their experimental concrete mix proportion at arbitrary time. However, critical chloride content for corrosion initiation is known to be affected by a lot of factors including cement content, type of binder, chloride binding, concentration of hydroxyl ions, and so on. It is necessary to define the unified formulation to express the critical chloride content for various mix proportions of concrete. The purpose of this study is to establish an analytical formulation of the critical chloride content of concrete. In this formulation, affecting factors, such as mix proportion, environment, chemical evolution of pore solution with elapsed time, carbonation of concrete and so on are taken into account. Based on the Gouda's experimental results, critical chloride content is defined as a function of $[Cl^-]$ vs. $[OH^-]$ in pore solution. This is expressed as free chloride content with mass unit to consider time evolution of $[OH^-]$ content in pore solution using the numerical simulation programme of cementitious materials, HYMOSTRUC. The result was compared with other experimental studies and various codes. It is believed that the approach suggested in this study can provide a good solution to determine the reasonable critical chloride content with original source of chloride ions, for example, marine sand at initial time, and sea water penetration later on.

  • Reinforced concrete starts to corrode when the chloride ion concentration which is the sum of included in concrete and penetrated from environments exceeds a certain level of critical chloride concentration. Therefore each country regulates the upper bounds of chloride amount in concrete and the regulations are different for each country due to its circumstances. In this study, the critical threshold chloride content according to unit cement amount is empirically calculated to propose a reasonable regulation method on the chloride amount. As a result, the critical threshold chloride content increases considerably according to cement content and it agrees with the established theories. The present regulations on total chloride amount 0.3 or 0.6 kg chloride ions per $1\;m^3$ of concrete does not reflect the influences of mix design, environmental conditions and etc. So it can be said that it is more reasonable to regulate the critical threshold chloride content by the ratio of chloride amount per unit cement content than by the total chloride content in $1\;m^3$ of concrete.

  • This study presented an algorithm to detect zigzag driving maneuver that is highly associated with vehicle crash occurrence. In general, the zigzag driving results from the driver's inattention including drowsy driving and driving while intoxicated. Therefore, the technology to detect such unsafe driving maneuver will provide us with a valuable opportunity to prevent crash in the road. The proposed detection algorithm used angular velocity data obtained from a gyro sensor. Performance evaluations of the algorithm presented promising results for the actual implementation in practice. The outcome of this study can be used as novel information contents under the ubiquitous transportation systems environment.

  • This paper describes the dynamic behavior and enhancement of Korean high-speed trains. The tail vibration reduction method of the yaw damper installation method change, which was derived from previous research, was applied to the running test of high-speed train. In addition, the vibration reduction method for the entire vehicle was derived by a numerical method and its effect was confirmed by a running test. The improved design was applied to the double-deck high-speed train coaches and the commissioning proceeded without problems in dynamic behavior. Sensitivity analysis of the suspension parameters affecting the critical speed of Korean next-generation high-speed trains was performed and four design variables that greatly affected the critical speed were derived. These were in the order of the primary elastic joint x-directional stiffness, the secondary yaw damper series stiffness, the secondary lateral damper damping coefficient, and the carbody damper damping coefficient. By optimizing the design variables, the suspension parameter that improves the critical speed by 23.3% can be used in the commercial designs of Korean next-generation high-speed trains.

  • A smart phone and the number of wireless terminals are mobile-to the nature of the AP mobility are many call transfer between wireless terminals and AP (Access Point). Each wireless terminal that is the call processing process for each is relatively large to cause the wireless traffic, and a factor that inhibits the efficient use of the radio band on the AP. In this paper, we use the power intensity threshold and threshold timer of the AP received by the mobile station to reduce the amount of switching traffic between the AP's cause and traffic generation factors between the wireless device and the AP that can effectively utilize the radio traffic from the AP the measures proposed. The proposed method and the conventional method is improved by simulation to handle the amount of radio traffic from the AP it was confirmed that it is possible to effectively utilize the whole of the radio band.

  • Nuclear fuel bundles are designed such that the heat flux at a-fuel pin surface should not exceed the critical heat flux (CHF) during normal operation and anticipated transient. Therefore, evaluation of the CHF for fuel bundle is demanded in an exact and reliable manner. One of the major concerns with the current application of CHF correlations is that the CHF based on circular tubes is applied to the fuel bundle subchannel analysis, mainly in terms of the hydraulic diameter with correction factors which may result in a source of possibly large uncertainties in CHF prediction. The hydraulic diameter does not recognize the local properties of fluid nor such effect as the surface curvature; the turbulence action on the convex surface is much more pronounced than that on the concave surface. Even for the tube having concave curvature, the effect of tube diameter on CHF becomes important with decreasing diameter. These facts imply that the convex curvature effect is significant and crucial to the reliable CHF prediction. This paper reviews and discusses analytical and experimental aspects of effect of transverse convex curvature in incompressible turbulent flow and heat transfer, and on CHF. Flow models to quantify this effect are briefly mentioned and future works are recommended.

  • In this study, the uncertainties in the critical flow functions (CFFs) calculated by the AGA8-dc equation of state were estimated. To this end, the formulas for enthalpy, entropy, and speed of sound, which are used in calculating the CFF, were expressed in the form of dimensionless Helmholtz free energy and its derivatives, and the uncertainty in Helmholtz free energy was inferred. To consider the variations in the compressibility-dependent variables induced by the variation (i.e., uncertainty) in compressibility, the form of the AGA8-dc equation was modified to have a deviation equal to the uncertainty under each flow condition. For each independent uncertainty component of the CFF, a model for uncertainty contribution was developed. All these changes were applied to GASSOLVER, which is KOGAS's thermodynamic database. As a result, the uncertainties in the CFF were estimated to be 0.025, 0.055, and 0.112 % at 10, 50, and 100 bar, respectively, and are seen to increase with the increase in pressure. Furthermore, these results could explain the deviations in the CFFs across the different labs in which the CFF international comparison test was conducted under the ISO management in 1999.
