The objective of this study is to examine the fracture characteristics of concrete at early ages such as critical stress intensity factor, critical crack-tip opening displacement, fracture energy, and bilinear softening curve based on the concepts of the effective-elastic crack model and the cohesive crack model. A wedge splitting test for Mode I was performed on cubic wedge specimens with a notch at the edge. By taking various strengths and ages, load-crack mouth opening displacement curves were obtained, and the results were analyzed by linear elastic fracture mechanics and the finite element method. The results from the test and analysis showed that critical stress intensity factor and fracture energy increased, and critical crack-tip opening displacement decreased with concrete ages from 1 day to 28 days. By numerical analysis four parameters of bilinear softening curve from 1 day to 28 days were obtained. The obtained fracture parameters and bilinear softening curves at early ages may be used as a fracture criterion and an input data for finite element analysis of concrete at early ages.

In a view point of earth environmental protection and social requirement, adhesively bonded structures of aluminum alloys have become to be employed for the purpose of decreasing fuel ratio by weight reduction and to improve performance in various engineering fields such as aircrafts, automobiles, rolling stocks and so on. In spite of such wide applications in adhesively bonded structures of aluminum alloys, the quantitative fracture criterion and evolution method of its bonded strength have not been established yet. The objective of this paper is to establish fracture criterion considering stress singularity at interface edges in adhesively bonded structures of aluminum alloys. Through the analyses of boundary element method and static fracture experiments with three different types of specimens in the adhesively bonded joints of aluminum alloys, its fracture criterion was proposed and discussed about strength evolution of adhesively bonded structures.

This study investigates interlaminar fracture characteristics of Graphite/Epoxy composite (HFG Graphite/Epoxy) under mode I (opening mode), mode II (sliding mode) and mixed mode loading conditions. The effects on interlaminar fracture toughness due to different fiber orientations on the crack surface are also investigated. The antisymmetric test fixture proposed by M. Arcan is used for this test. Both critical stress intensity foctors and critical energy release rates were determined and several mixed mode fracture criteria were compared to the experimental data. Also fracture surfaces were investigaed to obtain informations on the fracture behaviors of Graphite/Epoxy composite by means of a scanning electron microscope(SEM).

This study is the analytical review on the inelastic region of CRC column strength curve. The inelastic region of CRC column strength curve is based on the Bleich theory and the maximum residual stress of $0.5{\sigma}_y$. This is somewhat conservative by considering the fact that the maximum residual stress of $0.3{\sigma}_y$ is well known. This study proposes column strength curve for nonlinear behavior of hot rolled structural steel members under axial force and tangent modulus Et, with the maximum residual stress of $0.3{\sigma}_y$ and compares them with those of CRC. The stress of the inelastic column under axial compression exceeds proportional limits and reaches yielding point before applied load render the column bent. The column strength curve that depends on gradually yielding state of section needs to be reviewed. In this study, it is derived that the critical load formular according to material yielding with the maximum residual stress of $0.5{\sigma}_y$ and compared with CRC column design curve.

This paper investigates the characteristics of buckling loads for steel arches with new type cross section which is consisted of T-section and pipe-section. A general purpose finite-element program ABAQUS was used to evaluate the inelastic buckling strengths of the arches which included the influence of the geometric and material nonlinearity. According to the comparisons between earlier studies and results from finite-element analyses, new design equations should be developed for the new arches. New buckling factors were developed to consider influence of rise-to-span ratio and boundary conditions. It is found that the presented factors are sufficiently accurate to predict the inplane buckling loads of new type section steel arches subjected to uniformly distributed loading. The proposed equations can be used to investigate new type steel arches subjected to unsymmetrical loading and composited arches.

Unidirectional commingled-yarn-based carbon fiber(CF)/polyamide(PA) 6 composite was fabricated under molding pressures of 0.4, 0.6 and 1.0 MPa to study its flexural deformation and fracture behavior. Fiber/matrix interfacial bonding area became larger with an increase of molding pressure from 0.4 to 0.6 MPa. For molding pressures .geq. 0.6 MPa, good flexural performance of similar magnitudes was attained. For the fracture test, four kinds of notch direction were adopted : edgewise notches parallel (L) and transverse (T) to the major direction of fiber bundles, and flatwise notches parallel(ZL) and perpendicular(ZT) to this direction. Nominal bend strength for L and ZL specimens exhibited high sensitivity to notching. ZL specimens revealed the lowest values of the critical stress intensity factor $K_c$ which was slightly superior to those of unfilled PA6 matrix. Enlargement of the compression area for T specimens was analyzed by means of the rigidity reduction resulting from the fracture occurrence.
The two dimensional size effect of specimen gauge section ($length{\;}{\times}{\;}width$) was investigated on the compressive behavior of a T300/924 $\textrm{[}45/-45/0/90\textrm{]}_{3s}$, carbon fiber-epoxy laminate. A modified ICSTM compression test fixture was used together with an anti-buckling device to test 3mm thick specimens with a $30mm{\;}{\times}{\;}30mm,{\;}50mm{\;}{\times}{\;}50mm,{\;}70mm{\;}{\times}{\;}70mm{\;}and{\;}90mm{\;}{\times}{\;}90mm$ gauge length by width section. In all cases failure was sudden and occurred mainly within the gauge length. Post failure examination suggests that $0^{\circ}$ fiber microbuckling is the critical damage mechanism that causes final failure. This is the matrix dominated failure mode and its triggering depends very much on initial fiber waviness. It is suggested that manufacturing process and quality may play a significant role in determining the compressive strength. When the anti-buckling device was used on specimens, it was showed that the compressive strength with the device was slightly greater than that without the device due to surface friction between the specimen and the device by pretoque in bolts of the device. In the analysis result on influence of the anti-buckling device using the finite element method, it was found that the compressive strength with the anti-buckling device by loaded bolts was about 7% higher than actual compressive strength. Additionally, compressive tests on specimen with an open hole were performed. The local stress concentration arising from the hole dominates the strength of the laminate rather than the stresses in the bulk of the material. It is observed that the remote failure stress decreases with increasing hole size and specimen width but is generally well above the value one might predict from the elastic stress concentration factor. This suggests that the material is not ideally brittle and some stress relief occurs around the hole. X-ray radiography reveals that damage in the form of fiber microbuckling and delamination initiates at the edge of the hole at approximately 80% of the failure load and extends stably under increasing load before becoming unstable at a critical length of 2-3mm (depends on specimen geometry). This damage growth and failure are analysed by a linear cohesive zone model. Using the independently measured laminate parameters of unnotched compressive strength and in-plane fracture toughness the model predicts successfully the notched strength as a function of hole size and width.

The effects of high filler loading technique on the reliability of epoxy molding compound (EMC) as a microelectronic encapsulant was investigated. The method of high filler loading was established by the improvement of maximum packing fraction using the simplified packing model proposed by Ouchiyama, et al. With the maximum packing fraction of filler, the viscosity of EMC wart lowered and the flowability was improved. As the amount of filler in EMC increased, several properties such as internal stress and moisture absorption were improved. However, the adhesive strength with the alloy 42 leadframe decreased when the filler content was beyond the critical value. It was found that the appropriate content of filler was important to improve the reilability of EMC, and the optimum filler combination should be selected to obtain high reliable EMC filled with high volume fraction of filler.
A work on the brittle to ductile transition (BDT) in single crystal alumina has been performed to understand and assess the dynamics of dislocation mobility around crack tip of brittle material. The critical stress intensity factor and yield strengths were obtained from bending test using precracked specimens at elevated temperatures. It was found that the BDT temperature was dependent on strain rate and orientation of specimen : for (1120) fracture surface, $1034^{\circ}C$, $1150^{\circ}C$ for $4.2 \times 10^{-6}$, $4.2 \times 10^{-7}s^{-1}$ respectively. Under a 4 point bending test, the moving distance of dislocation generated near crack front in ductile range is determined by an etch pits method. The velocity of dislocation in sapphire obtained from the double etching method was applied to modelling study.

High strength and fracture toughness of Al-Li-Cu alloy(2090 Al alloy) have been achieved by the improvement of melting and casting, extrusion and heat treatment techniques. To establish the sucessful process for semi-industrial scale ingot(20Kg) the following areas have been investigated: (1) Improvement of melting and casting techniques for ingot by introducing atmospheric modifications, vacuum and rotary degassing, and deslagging. (2) The effect of heat treatment on mechanical properties (3) Mechanical characterization by tensile test, fracture toughness test and fatigue crack propagation test. High mechanical properties were found to be intimately related with ingot soundness. Tensile strength of final products varied from 534MPa to 566MPa in peak aged condition while elongation/ductility ranged from 9.0% to 11.9%. From the fracture toughness test with using compact tensile specimen, plane strain fracture toughness($K_{Ic}$) appeared to be 39MPa${\surd}$m in peak aged condition and 23MPa${\surd}$ m in underaged condition. When load ratios of 0.1, 0.3 and 0.5 were given ${\Delta}K_{th}$ was 6.0MPa${\surd}$ m, 5.3MPa${\surd}$ m and 4.3MPa${\surd}$ m respectively.
