  • The present study was designed to examine fathers' awareness and practice of picture book reading with toddlers. The subjects were 221 fathers who have toddlers, and the data collected by questionnaires were analysed by mean and standard deviation, and frequency analysis. As a result, approximately 59% of fathers stated that it is essential to read to their children who are 12 month old or less, and 36% of fathers answered that they read books as much as their children wanted. The majority considered the emotional aspect of picture book reading as being significant. Also, nearly half (46%) of the fathers read books to their children 1-2 times per week, and 37% of them spent 6-10 minutes at a time reading books. While reading books, 60% of the fathers explained text and pictures to their children and a fourth of the fathers answered their children's questions. Also, while reading books, fathers tried to accept their toddlers' responses positively. However, they did not have much time to read books to their children and had little knowledge on how to read books to infants. Further research and education programs on picture book reading for fathers are needed.

  • This study aimed to investigate the semantic preview effect in the parafoveal processing of words that are presented in advance in the parafoveal area ahead of the fixation point, benefiting word processing in the fovea. Using the boundary technique in eye-tracking experiments, 25 Chinese-Korean bilinguals, whose native language is Chinese, were presented with 96 sentences that contained a mix of Chinese and Korean, where Korean words were associated with Chinese characters semantically. The study aimed to determine whether a semantic preview effect could be extracted in reading. The experimental sentences were divided into four conditions: the same Korean native word condition (e.g., "나라" meaning "country"), the same Korean word with semantic equivalent in Chinese condition (e.g., "국가" meaning "country"), the same Chinese condition with semantic equivalent in Korean (e.g., "国家" meaning "country"), and the unrelated Chinese condition to the target word (e.g., "围裙" meaning "apron"). The results showed a preview effect in both the Korean word and Chinese word conditions, with a larger preview effect observed in the Chinese word condition compared to the Korean word condition.

  • In this paper, a local DL (Data Line) sensing method with smaller parasitic capacitance replacing the previous distributed DB sensing method with large parasitic capacitance is proposed to reduce the time to transfer BL (Bit Line) voltage to DL in the read mode. A new BL switching circuit turning on NMOS switches faster is also proposed. Furthermore, the access time is reduced to 35.63ns from 40ns in the read mode and thus meets the requirement since BL node voltage is clamped at 0.6V by a DL clamping circuit instead of precharging the node to VDD-VT and a differential amplifier are used. The layout size of the designed 512Kb EEPROM memory IP based on a $0.13{\mu}m$ BCD is $923.4{\mu}m{\times}1150.96{\mu}m$ ($=1.063mm^2$).

  • The present study investigated the perceptual span(or the span of effective vision) of junior-high school students during reading Korean, using the material and the moving-window display change technique used in Choi & Koh(2009). The 8 different window sizes were used in the experiment. They were 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15 characters in size and the whole line. Reading rate, number of fixation, saccadic distance, fixation duration were compared between each window-size condition and the whole line condition. Considering the pattern of eye-movement measures above, the size of the perceptual span of junior-high school students in Korean reading may be estimated to be 9 characters, that is 4 characters to the right and 1 characters to the left of the fixation.

  • OneNAND flash is a high-performance hybrid flash memory that combines the advantages of both NAND flash and NOR flash. OneNAND flash has not only all virtues of NAND flash but also greatly enhanced read performance which is considered as a downside of NAND flash. As a result, it is widely used in mobile applications such as mobile phones, digital cameras, PMP, and portable game players. However, most of the general purpose operating systems, such as Linux, can not exploit the read performance of OneNAND flash because of the restrictions imposed by their virtual memory system and block I/O architecture. In order to solve that problem, we suggest a new approach called virtual I/O segment. By using virtual I/O segment, the superior read performance of OneNAND flash can be exploited without modifying the existing block I/O architecture and MTD subsystem. Experiments by implementations show that this approach can reduce read latency of OneNAND flash as much as 54%.

  • In large distributed systems, replications of data and service are needed to decrease communication cost, increase availability, and avoid single server bottleneck. Tree Quorum protocol is a representative replication protocol, which exploits a logical structure. Tree quorum protocol is one of the replication protocols allowing low read cost only in the best case, while the number of replicas exponentially increases as the level grows. In this paper, thus, we propose a new replication protocol, called symmetric tree protocol which efficiently solves the problem. The proposed symmetric tree protocol also requires much smaller read cost than previous protocols. We conduct cost and availability analysis of the protocols, and the proposed protocol displays comparable read availability to the tree protocol using much smaller number of nodes. Also, the symmetric tree protocol has much smaller response time than the logarithmic protocol.

  • This study analyzed experimental studies of intervention programs provided to improve reading comprehension of elementary school students using a systematic review research method. Cochrane's handbook was applied, and key questions were formulated according to the PICOTS-SD. The inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied to 1,610 papers searched in KCI, and the final 18 cases were selected for analysis. The risk of bias was evaluated using the 'RevMan5' tool provided by Cochrane. As a result of the evaluation, the risk of bias was low in most areas. And for the qualitative analysis of these papers, a data summary table was prepared. As a result, the types of intervention programs were diverse, and in many cases, upper grade students were applied. The size of the experimental group ranged from 6 to 29, and there were more QED-based studies than RCT-based studies. The most mediation time was 40 minutes, and the number of mediation sessions was 8 to 24. And in all studies, the intervention programs were found to be effective in improving reading comprehension.

  • This paper emphasizes the effect of using poetry in the University General English education and suggests the teaching method of English education with a Frost's poem, "Out, Out- ." These days, learner-centered English education and integrative study of four linguistic functions, reading, listening, speaking and writing are considered important in the University General English class. Poetry is very effective text for the education purposes. Poetry techniques like a visual image, rhythm, rhyme, or repetition are actually mnemonics and strongly connected to the enhancement of memory and oral linguistic function. This paper suggests the specific education methods in the poetry selection, pre-reading step, reading step and after- reading step with concrete examples of "Out, Out-." These education methods through the 'oral text' can be a good and sustainable model for learner-centered education.
