  • The Cheondeok-Song (religious songs of Cheondo-Gyo) of the Japanese colonial period shown on Cheondo-Gyohwe-Weolbo, the monthly magazine of Cheondo-Gyo Church were examined in this paper. The results are as follows. There are scores of songs, lyrics, and articles related to Cheondeok-Song in the monthly magazine. The five-tone scale or Korean traditional rhythm style was partly used, but western music form was dominant in most of the songs. Especially the four-part form of Christian hymns became usual since 1931. This shows how people thought of the new trends. The reception of the new trends being emphasized, but they recognized tradition as an object of overcoming rather than of succeeding. The lyrics contain religious contents and the spirit of the period to restore national self-respect and contribute to the world peace through overcoming Japanese imperialism. But the rhythm of seven and five syllables which is suspected to have been introduced by Japan was spread after the 1920s. Cheondeok-Song have been sung in the three grand anniversaries and other anniversaries, the Prayer-day, in Cheondo-Gyo church services on Sunday, ceremonies, and in lecture. There are various kinds of songs and their status is very high. Especially, Cheondeok-Song have been used actively in mission works and edification for women. Cheondeok-Song actively reflected the domestic and international trends and the demands of that times. They could sing self perfection through enlightenment and also the social reform based on it. These are the reasons why I think Cheondeok-Song of those days are so important. Cheondeok-Song reflected modern elements actively, but couldn't succeed the national form and the traditional elements properly. The problem of cultural identity is not only a specific group's but also that of the whole humanity of maintaining cultural diversity. This is also a task that Cheondo-Gyo Cheondeok-Song have to solve in the future.

  • The Kyodong Island on the Yellow Sea has experienced dramatic transformations in the process of massive reclamations of tidal flats. Consisting originally of detached several islets, Kyodong became an integrated island country with the establishment of sea dikes across the salt marshes. The coastal plaines passed through four distinct stages of development. During the nascent period from the Early States to the Koryo Dynasty, strategic considerations led up to the establishment of causeways and garrison farms as well as private land plots. The relocation of regional headquarters of the navy into the island made the reclamation of tidal flats a systematic project during the period of Chosun Korea. The implantation of a large-scale estate by Japanese capitalists was the most characteristic feature of this region's geography during the colonial period. Present-day Kyodong displays various agrarian landscapes of standardized land plots, reinforced sea dikes, and automated agricultural machinery. Throughout the periods irrigation systems have sustained the panoramic transformation of the agricultural geographies of the Kyodong Island. The local people afflicted by a chronic deficiency of water came up with ingenuous irrigation systems such as springs, paddy reservoirs, reservoirs, tanks, artesian wells, and pump stations.

In this review, some case studies and implementation of proper tree selection system during the period of Japanese rule, the atlas of climatically favourable regions for the species of trees and bamboos in Korean peninsular, and the test results on regional afforestation, tree selection and proper tree selection of fast growing trees were introduced. Of these documents, especially, the atlas of climatically favourable regions of trees and bamboos growing in Korean peninsular is considered as a valuable document. It tis expected that these historical documents on proper tree selection system might be use as references for the researches on indigenous forest, forest resources development, afforestation of fire damaged areas, and the restoration project of North Korea by the time of reunification of Korea.

To do this, the articles of newspaper and periodicals, books, official documents, official gazettes, statistics, publications of official history of Daegu City Library and research papers were widely collected and cross-checked with each others. As the result of this study, the precedent researches and official history publications related to Daegu City Library had some important errors including the date of the municipal ordinance for Daegu City Library, the first building of Daegu City Library and the date of the breaking-ground, completion and opening for the new building. It is assumed that these errors were generated from the shortage of bibliographic information and full-text databases at those time. At the end of this study, additional research about the history of Daegu City libraries during the Japanese Colonial Period were suggested.
